Lake Michigan Beaches that are available to metal detecting

I tried searching for this information but got no results here on FM. I'm interested in knowing which if any beaches on Lake Michigan allow metal detecting. I'm about 2 hours or better from there and would like to take a road trip one day and spend a few hours hunting with a scoop instead of a shovel. I'm concerned about safety first as in not getting harassed by thugs and of course I don't want any legal problems as well. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Steve

Well after researching those MD friendly locations provided above, it looks like a overnight camping trip will be necessary, now I guess I have to look into getting me a travel trailer.....smiles.

CK the beaches up in Wilmett and Winnetka Many of us went to those beaches because the water got deeper closer in. May have to snorkel though.
