Hi every one. i just joined this forum a few minutes ago. This is obviously my first of hopefully many posts. a few weeks ago i purchased a Garrett Scorpion Gold Stinger but havent been able to use it much so far because its been raining buckets here in B.C Canada. Im quite the rookie but am learning and hope to catch on quick. I have one question if someone out there can help me with. When i turn on my Garrett it beeps 4 times letting me know that the batteries are fine but after that the volume does not work. I can turn it to the max and it still makes no noise. The only time it makes a noise is when i pass the coil over something like a coin for example, then it does its beep thing. I watched the instructional video and it shows that you can operate this detector with it at a low, continual sound. Does anyone know what I can do or is there something wrong with this detector? Also today I got out for awhile and was detecting on an old logging trail and found this old Coke can, it was down about 10 inches deep. This is my first cool find and hope to find more!!! If anyone can help me out with this volume thing it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Bcboy and Welcome:

I'm new to the forum myself and have been warmly welcomed.

I don't have an answer for your volume situation, but before long someone here will. Just keep checking back..this is the place to learn about your Garrett:geek:

Welcome aboard! AS Dick said, your answer will come, probably from Bill (Uncle Willy). Of the regulars, he's likely got the most experience with the SGS.

It sounds like you are in the discriminate mode and need to run in the All Metal mode to have the threshold. Again, Im guessing but will be watching this thread as Im very interested in the SGS.

Youll notice at the top of every posting box the checkbox for replies to your email. Just click on it and youll get replies sent to you.

You're confusing volume with threshold. It's not supposed to make a noise unless it encounters metal. IF you want noise bump your threshold up and it will hum constantly. After you turn the machine on with DEPTH control flip the TUNING switch to AUTO. Now rotate AUDIO control until you achieve a faint hum. As long as it remains in AUTO you will maintain the sound.

Thanks Uncle Willy, I did exactly what you said and I have volume control now. Mr Garrett says in his video that he recommends using a metal detector with a continual faint hummm sound. Does it really make that much of a difference if you operate it with or without the hummm sound? What do you think? I guess ill have to try for myself now that i know how to adjust the volume, its trial and error for me at this point but thats the only way ill learn. I also need to purchase some headphones. Thanks again for your help.

A Great forum to read, especially if you use Garrett metal detectors. I think the guys have pretty well given you some good direction with the Scorpion.

Here's a summery of how Canadian coins read on the newer GTI, GTP and ACE Series Detectors:

PENNIES: Depending on their year and length of time in the ground, expect them to read one notch before the penny icon to a couple of notches past the penny icon. You have to dig dig dig.

NICKELS: Again....what year and length of time in ground. They will either show up at the penny icon or nickel icon. They tend to give a smooth signal on the nickel notch, not a rough sound like the sound of a pulltab.

Dimes: If 1968 0r older,(silver)they will read clearly in the penny range. Newer, they might not read at all if freshly minted and recently fallen on the ground. (not to worry, my buddies non-Garrett machine does the same) If they have been in the ground, say for several months, they tend to bounce around pulltab and coin. If you dig the plug and loose the signal, chances are that you got a clad dime. You now need to find it in all metal mode (pinpointing) to find it and remove it.

Quarters:1968 or older read in coin range, usually smack dead center under the quarter icon. If new, again, might be missed. If in the ground for at least several months, expect it to bounce around penny, quarter and pulltab icon. Again, once you make a plug, you may loose the signal, so you have to use pinpoint mode to find it and remove it.

Loonies and Toonies ($1.00 & $2.00 coins) give a strong signal under the coil at penny or quarter. Garrett machines like these coins. If you get one under your coil, you will surely dig it!
Summary on Canadian Coins:

If you hunt in coin mode and notch out the nickel and pulltab, you will still get nearly all of your Canadian Coins, with the exception of a few nickels. "BUT", you might also miss out on a gold ring too. So, based on your goals and available time for a hunt, choose your programs carefully.

Many other makes and models of detectors will not read or barely read our Toonies, Loonies, & nickels. I know from experience from hunting recently hunted playgrounds, and that's what I usually found...nickels, loonies. toonies and some other clad. I suspect that Garrett engineering designed their machines to detect these one and two dollar coins, as I sent them one of each several years ago. I am also hearing from others using the recent Garrett lines of detectors getting the same results.

Because nearly all detectors are made in USA, they read U.S. coins with great accuracy. When hunting Canadian coins, you need to slow down a bit, and if you get any signal at all, you should go over it in different directions.....to see if it will read and bounce around in the coin and pulltab range.

Thanks John-Edmonton for that insight. By the way, I was born in Wainwright,Alberta, just down the road from you.

I think Charles is a lot like the rest of us old farts who cut our teeth on BFO's where you had to have that threshold humming if you wanted to find anything. It's like an old security blanket you don't want to give up or that old, rotten, pair of sneakers you just can't throw away. One thing about that hum - you always know your machine is on and working.

I think its from the 1950s. This can does not have a pull tab. I think this can was meant to be opened with a can opener back in the day. This can that I found has no puncture holes or any evidence that it was opened but is empty of its contents.

Bcboy,
Uncle Willy is a good guy to have on the forum, he has helped me with my Scorpion Gold Stinger, I think once you have learned yours, you will really like it. Go ahead and get the 3X7 coil for it, I sure like mine. I am sure I will be back asking Uncle Willy some more stuff about mine. I am still learning more about it all the time, so stick with it and you will enjoy your stinger as much as I do mine,

Hey Kelly:

The shoulders are hurting again. Weird, huh? Several days ago they were fine. How you doing?

Nice forum here: I've learned a lot. Ordering an Ace 250 from Beetle tomorrow. These guys convinced me:surrender:

Hi, Interesting can. Being no holes, someone
must have dropped it , and it sunk in the dirt
from gravity until it rusted out, and sprang a
leak..:) My initial guess on the date was early
60's maybe, but it could be late 50's. I notice
the front has an old look to it, but the side
uses the more modern 60ish look letters. I'm not
sure when they started using those new style letters.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. I'm new also. It seems
pretty lively around here. Hummmm. I just noticed
the lettering on the top of the can. Quite unusual..
Maybe that is a 50's can...I don't remember any cans
in the 60's having lettering on the top. And I can't
really remember what 50's coke cans looked like, as
we used bottles most of the time. I was young too...
Thats the first coke can I've seen with the white
diamond on the front I think. MK

Dick,
I hope it gets better and you don't have to go through what I did with my shoulder. I think you will like your new Garrett. I sure enjoy mine. When you get it and find lots of good stuff let us know all about it.

Kelly

Thanks Uncle Willy,
I just had shoulder surgery and as soon as it gets healed up I plan on getting the Scorpion out and do some prospecting. Take care and I will talk to you later.
