Sensitivity = Manual mode as high as it will go and be reasonable stable, rarely less than 25, almost always 26-28 with the stock coil, 30 if the conditions are very good
Threshold = just barely audible.
Volume = 10 max
Gain = 7
Variability = 10 Max
Limits = Max
Sounds = Ferrous
Response = Normal
Recovery = Fast Off, Deep On

It seems we have similar ground and experiences with the Explorer. I have discovered alot the same things you've said in this thread. There are definitely times that lower sensitivity will get targets that the higher sensitivity makes sound crappy. Then there are times that the 'ragged edge' is the way to run the Explorer. I have a site a few blocks from my house I've pounded. That site seems to like lower sensitivity to get coins. I have another site that the first times I was there we didn't get much to talk about. The next time up I cranked up the sensitivity on the Explorer to the point my Explorer was very unstable. I ended up digging over 400+ wheaties, 50+ silver and a good deal of IHs. Everything at this site was beyond 6 inches. The site had definitely been detected before because there was a lack of coins to the 6 inch mark. Very few coins were a solid hit on the LCD but always came through on the audio ID. Basically, it comes down to ... don't be afraid to experiment with the sensitivity.
