JUST CURIOUS HOW YOU GUYS GOT STARTED IN METAL DETECTING

I started back in 1973 when I seen what my dad was finding at a old park he lived by, he has a ammo can filled with old coins and lot of tokens and jewelry from the 2 or 3 month prior, and to think I thought what he was doing was stupid and people were watching him. After seeing this I got somewhat interested myself and when I got my income tax refund I went to the local Whites dealer to see what he had, but being closed I went to the local hardware store and bought a Jetco and took it to the park and found some trash and did get a merc and a silver ring. I used it a few times and then stuck it in the corner like many do. I just so happened to stop by the Whites dealer to look at what he had and seen some great things he had found and told him about my Jetco I had bought and found stuff, but wasn't really impressed with detecting. He told me to rent one of his Whites and try it again I think it was a Coin master 3 and at that time there were no disc on any of them and the knob could be set of metal or minerals. The cost was around $6 for the day, so I rented it for one day and it seems much better than my Jetco and when I showed him what I had found he told me that was not enough, so I could use it free for another day if I wanted too. I used it the next day and did better and when I took it back he ask how I liked it and told him I liked it, so he told me to buy it then, but I didn't have the money then, so he told be to give him $30 and told me if I couldn't find the rest by detecting in the next 3 month I wasn't trying, so I took him up on it and got hooked in detecting big time. I found more gold rings and other misc in those 3 months and really learned how to tell the difference in rusty bottle caps and good targets as there were not many pull tabs around then.
I got hooked so bad that I would have a hour for dinner at work and would spend 15 minutes getting to the park and detect for half hour and hurry back to work, remember getting up when the sun came up and detected until it was time to go to work and hurry to work.
It is a fun hobby for some while others think they can become rich doing it and quit within a few time out, but those that want the excitement and learn more about history, meet some great people and get some exercises while relaxing and getting your mind off your problems metal detecting can and will do wonders for your body and soul.
I don't do as much anymore as my health is bad for all the abuse I did to my body working over the years, but when I do get out I feel so much younger swinging one of my detectors as just maybe my next signal will be my gold coin I been looking for since 1973.
