just a thought, It just seem to me that a quarter and a beer, soda can reads the same most of the time.

Easy fix....lift your coil about 8" off the ground if you still get a signal then it's a beer can.....if not...it's most likely a coin.
 
its all conductivity. U can have a piece of copper that will read like a quarter if its the right size. This is where detecting experience and skill come in. make the mistakes, they are better than clad trust me
 
As was already mentioned, it's all about conductivity. A tiny piece of that beer can will read as foil. A larger peice will read as nickle. Large enough peice will read as a quarter or even a half dollar.
