I've got paralysis from ANALYSIS

I'm 46 and I have just discovered metal detecting. My wife says I can spend 250-300 on a detector. I'v e read all about the ACE 250/350, the Teknetics Delta 4000 as well as countless others. I'm a noobie for sure but I intend to immerse myself into this hobby. I want to hunt for coins and jewelery. I have places to hunt inland and plenty of beach as well

What should I buy? I want to pull the trigger on something by this time tomorrow.

Thanks

Dave

You sir should buy a Tesoro Silver umax!!------Why should I buy a Silver you ask------well, firstly because it's a great little machine for someone starting out!-----Other reasons being--It carrys a lifetime warranty--is pretty much a turn on & go machine & with pre-set g.b.----Also is in your price range you mentioned & if by some (slim) chance you discover this great hobby isn't for you, the Silver has good retail value--you could sell it & re-coup (most) of your money.----Check the reviews on it, you hardly EVER read a negative review on the Silver umax.---------Del

I can't argue with the Silver umax. I love mine. If you have to have id and all that info,, I understand the Fisher F2 is close to the Tesoros in recovery time.

I'd second the Tesoro. I started with a Cibola and after going through a bunch of Target ID machines I'm back to using a Tesoro (Tejon). Once you learn the language of a Tesoro you don't need much else. I have no financial interest, just an interest in seeing somebody start out the right way. The real tool is your intelligence, where it applies to research. You can't find goodies if they aren't there. I know a couple of guys that use low end machines, but make more finds than anybody I know and its because they have knack for sniffing out good sites by doing research and talking to people. Good luck and remember, patience might be a virtue, but in treasure hunting its a requirement.

I made some amazing finds when I was running an Ace 250. The Ace 350 is geared more for relics but is still a coin killer. And you simply cannot beat Garretts customer service ..

I have to agree that a Tesoro Silver uMax is the way to go. Great light weight detector that can realy sniff out gold and coins. Just do a google on reviews for the detectors you are interested in and you will see the Silver is hard to beat. Best of luck.

I like a ID detector. So i would say go for the 350. I have 1 and it does a good job.

The ace 250 by Garrett is about $ 212.00. It has a visual screen, your not hunting blind on audio only. Adjustments are made with buttons you push not dials you turn. Garrett detector are use by most police agencys, airlines use Garrett hand held detectors. The 350 Garrett is very similar to the 250 but with a bigger head like the one on the AT PRO ($295.00) . Also the Garrett Has great customer servive. Of course this is my opinion, Garrett is the way to go and to start out the right way.

I agree.

My son (33) started with a 250 ,upgraded by adding a DD coil to the 250 and is finding as much stuff as I am having 1500 and 2500 and he his going as deap.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I ordered a Tesoro Silver Umax this afternoon from Backwoods and got a great deal. It'll be at my house on Friday and I'm so excited to get out there this weekend. I'll let you know what I find.

Nice !! Dave you really did make a great choice.

Mike

The analysis is you'll get addicted:laugh:

I had the same decision & made the same choice. I'm still a tone only detector-even on machines with doo dads & meter ID. Thats because the quality of the tone tells me more than anything else the detector has to say.

Take a peek in the Tesoro forum & search "The Tesoro shake". I didn't invent it but I do think it's the a great technique. I read about it on the old Troy websight under tips for the Troy X2..

Happy searches-I'd use little or no disc(I run the disc knob pointed at Iron) & dig it all to get started & heck-thats how you get the GOLD!
Cheers

I am addicted I think. All I've been doing is plotting out where I'm going to begin searching once I get it on Friday. My backyard is first so I can learn and then of course it will be the front yard, the curb strip, then the park directly across the street, the park 500 yards away and then the school I teach at. Then there's Saturday!

I'm just relieved I finally got one.

Now don't get discouraged by all the junk you will dig. We all dig trash. Its part of the hobby. And please learn how to dig a proper hole as not to damage turf if park/school/etc. hunting. If you don't know proper digging technique yet, just ask. We'll be happy to advise.

Excellent advice Terra----and even more important than deciding on which detector we should purchase (IMO)!----What you stated is/will be the deciding factor of the longevity of this great hobby.--------BTW Dave, you not only purchased a great little detector but you purchased it from a great guy---Richard of Backwoods Detectors, one of our top dealers--he will take good care of you before, during & after the sale.----------Del

Yes, don't be too concerned about the junk you might be finding. That is how you find the good stuff !

Ha Ha no doubt on the digging. I will be so smooth hopefully no one will ever know I was there. I plan on digging everything as well as I agree that's the only way to learn. I'm in this not as much for the treasure but rather for the hunt. I love to fish and I hope this hobby reflects it for me. I've never had a bad day of fishing, even when all I caught was seaweed.
