hi DFX-Gregg. there are allot of things that could be affecting the depth. first there are allot of adjustment that are easy to mess up. if you are trying to make your own programs settings this can be good or it can be bad. second whites are really susceptible to radio and electrical interference which will really play havoc with the detector. third something is wrong with the detector or coil. fourth highly mineralized ground. i know you probably already know this things, but i used to have a xlt, and quite frankly it got no better results than you are experiencing. not saying that they are junk, but maybe for my area they did not work that well. i after a couple of years trying to learn it better and being patient with it gave up and went to another brand. the whites was not my first detector since i have been involved since 79 not long compared to some but long enough for me to start knowing what works and what doesn't. it is funny because i compared mine to a BH in a test garden that i constructed and the BH out did it with the stock coil on it. i had different coins planted at varying depths and including a 25 cent piece at 12 inches, fair to say none of my detectors hit that one. that does not mean that the whites is junk but maybe for my area, they will not work that well. they are a versatile machine and if take the time i believe they will give good results, but for me you can not give me one because the trouble i have in my area with them. i would send your detector back to the company to get it checked out and if it is the same when you get it back then it is probably one of the things i mentioned above and you might have to switch brands to solve the problem. good luck.
