It's time I asked...

Elton..they have to be ther...7.0 to 10.0...and I want to get there...I always in my mind think coins are where I am hunting...now I am starting to think not only are there coins where i am hunting..but coins just out of reach ....

Greg:

Why don't you contact LARRY (IL)..he knows how to make those DFX's sing..........He can advise the best settings and he's most likely not far from where you detect. It's also possible you have a coil thats out of whack....Sometimes intense Heat will warp the wiring inside..I had a Cz5 like that once and could get no depth at all..3- 4 inches........... Tried a friends coil, and it was like night and day difference..Just a thought..but you really should be going very much deeper than you are. My problem is I only have used a DFX a few times(Borrowed) so do not have the experience to say yes, or no for certain ..but I will restate and go out on a limb..It should hit much deeper than you state yours goes........ Good Luck !!!

PS: Have you tried using the 3khz frequency only when hunting for deep Silver ????

Greg:

I just read this post..My XLT goes deeper the faster I swing it within reason..Maybe the DFX does too !!
I find that on an iffy target if you whip it back and forth a few times it reads the signal better and deeper.again thats on XLT..

Elton I have been hitting the parks hard the last few days...cutting back on pennies and increasing my dollar amounts that way...lots of coins...had stock on the whole time..old park...only one signal over 4.5 the whole time...air tests...not a sound past 5.5! I did contact White's and I am going to send it in...covered under 2 year warranty...

I ran just about every program I could find... The one that worked best for me was actually one the the eeprom programs...the high pro...Most of the programs I received or reviewed seem to be a modification of either the eeprom high pro or the eeprom deep silver program... So I am going to work on a program some where in the middle...with some of the suggestions I received...

I was told by a Whites representative...that to properly activate the coil...your swing from left to right..or right to left...(armspan) should only take two seconds...seems about right...Lately I actually was probably a little on the slow side...but found that interesting...

A suggestion: I believe you said you were in a club. Ask some of the people who find older coins how deep most were and what is the deepest they have found in your area....Jack

hi DFX-Gregg. there are allot of things that could be affecting the depth. first there are allot of adjustment that are easy to mess up. if you are trying to make your own programs settings this can be good or it can be bad. second whites are really susceptible to radio and electrical interference which will really play havoc with the detector. third something is wrong with the detector or coil. fourth highly mineralized ground. i know you probably already know this things, but i used to have a xlt, and quite frankly it got no better results than you are experiencing. not saying that they are junk, but maybe for my area they did not work that well. i after a couple of years trying to learn it better and being patient with it gave up and went to another brand. the whites was not my first detector since i have been involved since 79 not long compared to some but long enough for me to start knowing what works and what doesn't. it is funny because i compared mine to a BH in a test garden that i constructed and the BH out did it with the stock coil on it. i had different coins planted at varying depths and including a 25 cent piece at 12 inches, fair to say none of my detectors hit that one. that does not mean that the whites is junk but maybe for my area, they will not work that well. they are a versatile machine and if take the time i believe they will give good results, but for me you can not give me one because the trouble i have in my area with them. i would send your detector back to the company to get it checked out and if it is the same when you get it back then it is probably one of the things i mentioned above and you might have to switch brands to solve the problem. good luck.

o yeah just want to add whites are real sensitive and the large coil 9.5 stock one does them no favor it's like putting a huge antenna on them to pick up everything .:rage:

Greg,
My XLT both pre-fix and after fix (within last month) has found coins and relics 6 to 8 inch very constantly. I am concerned to hear that the DFX is not doing better.
I also think this topic should include pre-amp(2) and AC SEN(74) settings. Mine in ().
The only good answer might have to come from White's. I recommend you get in touch with Bob at Centerville electronics. They are a White's service center. Bob is well spoken of within our brotherhood.
Good luck and keep us updated.

thanks for the info....I am consistently hitting 6.5 with the smaller Eclipse coil...in fact between the two having a big month...but as usual mostly clad...stock coil was sent 2 day mail tp whites on Saturday...hopefully a new one is on way back...weather is starting to drop fast here...not long before frozen ground...

thanks as far as programs/adjustments I basically asked quite a few people for their programs, people who made adjustments and were successful. I have not really seen anything I have not tried...I am close to having a set clad program...modified off of the eeprom high pro. Stock coil is back at Whites today I think...

I've two DFXs, the 5.3, 2xstock, and 1400. The stock and 1400 are deeper going, not sure which is more.

Sounds like you definitely have a problem Gregg. Programming makes a big difference but a dime should be detectable at 7" or more.

The deeper coins will be more erratic as far as ID and depth reading. I look for targets that sound good on some swings and then read fainter when pinpointing. Personally I pass most clad (except for quarters and higher) which means anything 3 or 4 inches.

A silver quarter should be detectable to 9" and half at a foot; deeper if conditions are right. (I think these are quite rare but should be old.) Around here a 7" penny should be an indian head, wheaties at 4".

coil should be back in Oregon right now....hopefully a new one is on way! I do get steady depth with my 5.3 coil....up to 6.5 inches.... I started to notice it was odd almost every reading seemed to be 4.5 on the stock....which I do not use that much anyways.... have you depth tested the 6 x 10? Think it is next for me....

well on my m-6 i gota sure 5"on all coils that is 4x6 5.3, and stock coil and 6x10 the 5.3 kept up whith the stock but 6" was about it with a good strong signal did better in clean beach sand my favorite coil was the 4x6 dd it kecked but in the park got close to metal posts and concreat and had great seperation and pinponted well depth was 4.5" good strong signal if i got a whites machine it is the 4x6 coil that i would put on it next upgrade would be the super 12 for deeper things i will say the m-6 is a great park machine no doubt i would prefer it to the cebola i have for park hunting but as a deep relick machine mabe a x terra 70 would be my choice

I think you will like the 6X10 coil better than the 950. I have not used my 950 much at all but the 6X10 has been staying on my M6 instead of the small shooter coil.

thanks hopefully stock coil will be back in a few days...and hopefully not the same one...if it is...I will not use...hit my goal for clad for month will post a pic on day or 2....been out almost everyday...weather about to turn here...supposed to be 12 degrees Monday night....early mornings ground is already frozen for a couple inches...once sun comes out nice and soft...

Haven't tried the 6x10. The 1400DD may go deeper than the stock but I've read otherwise, IIRC in Jeff's book.

In general a larger coil should go deeper but with less separation. That is my understanding.

Definitely though 4.5" on a dime with the stock is not right; something is broken or programmed wrong.

Jim

In our Illinois soil, the 6x10 is not as deep as the 9.5. It is lighter, about 1.5 oz, covers a little more per sweep, and has better side to side separation. Rob

I was looking to buy a new detector. Currently use an ACE 250. I have had good results. My only problem is the response time between finds. Does anyone use the Prizm V or others? Looking for depth and overall performance. Live in TN. Looking around the 450.00 and 500.00 dollar range. Any help is greatly appreciated.
