It's time I asked...

I think this is a question we all would like to see answered...here goes... With you Whites detector, which one/ones are you using and what depth are you getting from each coil...also if possible include air tests...thanks!

Obviously I am using a dfx... here are the best depths I am getting.... stock coil usually no deeper than 4.5 inches a big disappontment on the depth.. air tests never run past 6.0. I also use the Eclipse 5.3...have had hits as deep as 7.5 but on average deepest 6.5....air tests out at 5-5.5...

I have posted some depth results before but ill start this off! I have a Classic III w Mr Bills Mods. I use stock blue max 950 coil. I have found coins at 10-11" deep. The machine will air test coins from 10"-14" depending on the size of the coin. It air tests a plain gold wedding band at 12". I hope you are only going 4.5" deep because there is nothing deeper! Anyway, I hope to get a smaller coil soon for the trashy areas.

Hi DFX I on my XL PRO have found coins 11 plus inch deep in he all metal mode,
Now I have found relic with the 950 coil over 2 feed deep
The XL PRO found a 11 inch dime and that is deeeeeep.
With my M6 I found a 9 inch quarter, but at this time it is the deepest coin i found with the M6
My Prizm I found coins 4 to 6 inch but I use it in the kiddie sand box,

The classic I found coins 5 to 9 inch deep
But at this time the XLPRO is my deeeeeeep hunter
My Minelab 3500 will go to China but it is my Gold detector
I had a DFX but I at that time only found coins in the 3 to 6 inch range.( But I know it can go much deeper)

Gregg, on your air tests are you talking about audio hits or hits that ID correctly?

I've got a modded IDX which will gets air tests hits from 9 - 10 inches. There is no way mine will hit the 10 - 14 inches that Joe gets. The 5.3 does 8-9" and the 9.5 looks like 9-10".

Looks like in air tests with the MXT the 9.5 does about 8-10 inches also and that is Max. My 8" excelerator and 6x10 don't get quite as deep. These are audio hits, I wasn't checking ID's. Rob

Gregg, I had the Whites M6 till this summer and it sounds a lot deeper then your DFX even with the 5.3 coil on it. I found coins on the average of 5-8" with it on sportfields. Infact my buddy Steve got me a Craftman 10" long thin screwdriver becuase I couldn't probe most of the finds on the sportsfields with my 6". I just can't believe your DFX is operating correctly and not seeing coins at 7+. Sure isn't having any problems bringing home the money thou from your count.

I'm certainly no expert, but I believe the DFX has different programs for different hunting situations. Are you only experiencing the lack of depth with only one or two of your programs, or is it all inclusive? I believe I've seen you post that you mostly go for numbers....hence the coin counter. Maybe you can set it up with a different program for depth, or make one of your own....which you probably have already done. I know that my M6 goes deeper with the stock coil than that...and will do air tests around 10 - 12 inches on a dime ( sound only and maxed out). Otherwise, you may wish to contact White's and see what they have to say. I'm sure the people on here will give you better advise than I can, but I wanted to reply to you simply because you are a coin hunting machine.....I'm actually even more impressed knowing what you've found with limited depth....Good Luck.

My XLT hits dimes 12" Air test
have dug 9" Dime in ground
Quarter at 12" Standing Liberty
Half dollar at 11" Franklin ( OLD BALL PARK)

The above is with sens at 74..My standard operating sens.

thanks for the great reply... I agree 100%... I have tried tons of programs...and I continue to hunt for clad...but now I also spend part of my hunt searching very slowly...the stock is not giving signals over 4.5 in dirt!

All I can say is my 5.3 is deeper and more accurate than the stock! Which is not good depth wise.....Today I had a great 2 hours clad wise...but again nothing no signals past 4.5....

Well believe me...I do not see alot of people stepping forward as you did and saying their dfx is only hitting 3 to 6 inches....but I believe there are alot more people in this range...bad coil...defective detector... I am going with the faulty coil... I have heard learn your machine, crank the gain...lower the gain...play around with the ac sens. all that stuff... Believe me I have tried it all...thanks for the response

It is very agravating...the coil will clean up surface clad...but my stock coil has no depth...have garden tested...air tested...and field tested... I usually have the smaller 5.3 on..so all summer it was no big deal... But now I want to rotate my coils during hunt to try to find more silver...but depth wise my stock coil does not get the extra depth reported here...

Good point on the surface clad my dfx definitely finds it...but I would like some depth also... I have been hunting alot lately...I had planned on slowing down...but I am trying to make a decision for next year...been trying programs from quite a few different forums.... Not sure how much quality hunting time I have left this year...going to probably order the 6 x 10 and see if the depth changes....The stock is going back to White's still under warranty....

Honestly Greg thats pretty consistant with the XLt Standard 950 loop..7 to 10 if they are there.
Some preamp gain and 74 sens and little tweaking here and there. maybe you just aren't in older sights where the deeper coins are...
My friend has a DFX and it keeps up with the XLT..

Earlier I posted my air tests and again as I said that was gain at max and disc at zero and just audio hits. I haven't found 1 nine or ten inch deep coin in the ground this year. All mine have been mostly 6" or less except for 2 dimes.around 7". I don't find anything at the air test depths. If you do send the coil and find anything wrong please take the time to post the results. Rob

coins just don't get deeper than than 6-7 inches. Here in NJ the clay and shale soil keeps them from going further unless it's a woods where decaying vegetation adds depth. In the early days I read posts of finds at 8-10 inches and thought for sure my XLT was not reaching those deep old coins. Since then I have added an Explorer and X Terra 70. Well guess what, the Explorer is finding coins at the same depth as the others, 6-7 inches. I hunt areas where I am sure no soil was added or taken, and low and behold the 1700-1800 coppers or other old items are sitting at 6-7 inches. Soil type has everything to do with depth I believe. The Explorer definately finds those tiny dimes at the max depth better than the others but aside from that I am probably not missing anything no matter which unit I use.

Randy I know what I would have thought...beer can! Seriously though...I am not getting any 10.5 signals...It just became odd with the stock...I started to notice 4.5....4.5...over and over...I realized hey...this is it...it is not going any deeper! Thanks for the response....Did you ever try the 6 x 10?

Thanks for the reply...actually I would be happy with a steady hit at 7.0.... I really noticed most of my targets with the 5.3 coil seem to be 3.5...but do get dimes at 6.5 with it... But the stock...evrything seems to be ...4.5.....
