is this normal for an explorer xs

Hey Charles, your statement...

Also, the Explorer will sometimes merge two different metals say iron and silver and give you a whacko tone and target ID in no mans land yet another reason not to disc iron

...certainly makes logical sense, though I haven't seen this happen on my Explorer. PROBABLY that's because I don't dig those "whacko" tones...makes me wonder what I have been missing. Do you "dig it all" when you hunt, Charles?

Recommend you start digging whacko tones, not trash I'm talking about targets that ID in no mans land where rarely anything ID's. You usually get something really cool, buttons, disimilar coins stuck together, barber half dollars sitting directly under a rusty bottle cap, half reale worn thin, 3 cent silver, I could go on. Not to give you guys a brain cramp but bottom right of the screen, buried where rusty bottle caps hit, yep certain types of old buttons. Top left corner, just to the right of nails, target will be consistent NEVER hitting in the far upper left corner where nails hit, again buttons.

I'll give you a tip Governor gave me many years ago when I was first learning the Explorer, go out and pick a depth at which older stuff is hitting, 5, 6 inches whatever depth older stuff is at on your site, and dig every damn target that's not a nail, it will be an eye opener. Best tip I ever got.

I am going to try this...

I own both detectors also ... And I don't think your detector is working correct ... First.. is there dirt between the coil and coil cover? .. second it could be the area u r in .. I have been to areas that phone lines or some other terrestial interference can raise heck with a lot of detectors ... MY new used XS .. Makes a chirp every now and then ... About the same as the DFX running hot with Tone ID on ..I ussually run at 24 auto ... And get coins at the 8 inch range all the time with the coin program ..it doesnt have tons of falsing the way yours seems to sound .. Of coarse soil condition is the key to depth with ANY detector .. I have been to BALL FIELDS that were so mineralized we couldnt get deeper than 4 inches with our dfx's .. And I am sure the Minelab would be about the same on that field .. But in good soil .. My XS acts about the same as my DFX ... I havent found any coins that I am not sure my DFX would not have found yet.. Like ten inches deep .. But I have found small brass junk at some pretty amazing depths .. So I aint saying it can't be done .. I just haven't gone over or dug a coin that deep yet to prove it .. But Im a trying :) ... The Minelab explorer reminds me of the DFX in a lot of ways ... Tones .. depth .. and they both have a little learning curve .. Too bad you cant find a guy with a spare XS coil and put that on yours .. I had a bad DD coil for my dfx .. My brother in law loved his 6 by 10 .. and mine never worked quite like his ... Falsing .. Chirps . No depth .. unable to turn sensitivity up with it .. If anything Id lean toward the coil... Just my 2 cents ..

An idea...

If you have no friends or acquaintances that are nearby and hunt with an Explorer, who might let you hook up their coil just to see if your machine performs better, you might post an ad on Findmall, asking if anyone has an old FBS coil that they are willing to part with for about 2 weeks; tell them you'll pay shipping both ways -- that you are just trying to test your new (used) Explorer to see if you may have a machine issue OR if it's a coil issue. I would think odds are pretty good that you'd get someone willing to help you out...
