Is this legit

That one is really hard to tell based on the picture posted. It sure looks like the button in the book. The civilian buttons I've found are similar, but not identical to the military buttons.
There's enough difference to easily tell them apart. Just because the back is missing, doesn't mean it was an iron back. Your button looks like it was hit by a plow blade and deformed enough that the back could have been dislodged.
Usually there will be some residual rust staining, and I don't see that in the pic, but once again it's hard to tell.
