Is This A Type of Button?

I found this in a farm field where I've found a few British coppers and tombac buttons along with some US large cents and the like. So I know it's a very old site. I've tried to figure out what this piece is but I haven't made any progress. Can anyone tell me what it is? Maybe a type of button or cufflink?

I would sway from a button in my opinion. Could be part of horse tack, guide of some sort. Just my thoughts.

The English would refer to this artifact as a decorative mount. The clenched over tabs are the giveaway. Some mount were riveted in place. Nice OLD find, thanks for sharing!
