is pinpointer necessary

New member
I just purchased my first detector a vaquero, the first time I used it a small park I found about 10 coins and other flotsam within the first hour I was wondering if a pinpointer would speed up the recovery of the coins I have gotten a couple of different opinions. Any help with what make and model of pinpointer you have had success with, thanks

Picking a Tesoro Vaquero for your first detector was a really smart choice. Another smart choice would be to purchase a Garrett Pro Pointer. There's really no good second choice in a handheld pin pointer. Period. Detecting without a Pro Pointer wouldn't be nearly as fun.

I'll second that, I don't hunt without my ProPointer. Really speeds things up. Tried several other models and like the ProPointer the best.

I would encourage any detectorist, no matter what machine they use, to get a pin pointer. And like Tabman, I wholly recommend Garrett's Propointer.

It is not that the pin pointer is absolutely necessary, but it greatly enhances your enjoyment of the hobby. I use one with a screwdriver for popping out shallow targets and I make almost no mess at all. Very clean.

For deeper targets, it helps me to concentrate my digging. Again, much smaller holes and better cleanup.

If you can afford one, I'd get it without a second thought. I never, ever go hunting without mine anymore.

Pinpointers are a valued assesory in the hobby, I have not had the chance to use the garrett model but use,
tha vibra probe 570, they are built like a tank and are waterproof , they are essential and help save from scratching coins, I would not leave home without it!!!

good topic!!!

absolutely you need one,,,, and the PP is the best,,,,, I could not afford the PP at first so I used a Harbor freight one ($16.00 bucks) it did the job for me until I collected enough clad to pay for the PP have fun !!!!

Let me sum it up.:)

If I only had $400 dollars to spend on a good detector and a pin pointer and the Pro Pointer cost $125. I'd be looking for the best deal I could get on a Tesoro detector with the remaining $275 dollars that I had left after I purchased the Pro Pointer.

But for many years we did it without pinpointers.

Like you I chose the Vaquero as my first detector a year and a half ago and have had success but after one season learning the machine I went for a Garrett Pro-pointer.
It is like having a second set of eyes in the hole. Advantages are smaller and neater holes, finding multiple targets in same hole, finding shallow targets before digging, able to detect at night or in low light, faster recovery, and I am confident that all targets are accounted for before filling in hole.
There is a video on youtube by 53silver that shows the advantages of using a pin-pointer with a Vaquero. If you have not seen his Vaquero videos by 53silver I would recommend looking at all of them.
I do not leave home without my Garrett Pro-Pointer.

Ouch Tabman! Let me give you the opportunity to tell me why a "Luxury" item is THAT important to you. I've been digging targets for going on 30-years and NEVER owned a pinpointer, as I felt I never needed one. I really have to question spending $125.00 on a tool that may save me, what, three-minutes-an-hour? Frankly, I think a pinpointer is just another "gadget." I KNOW I will catch a lot of heat for my views on this subject. To me it is like owning a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. You have the bike, but now you need the saddlebags; and the jacket; and the... it goes on and on. Take that $125.00 and invest it in research tools - My two-cents.

Terry use a Garrett Pro Pointer of 6 months and get back to me. I bet you will be preaching to the choir.

Besides, you can get a &X&X of good new or used Tesoro for $275.:tesoro::)

I can see where beach hunters with sand scoops would not see a need for a Pro Pointer.

I agree totally with what Minas man says.:beers:

I use my hands just like gold pospecting when I can't see the nugget - scoop up the dirt, run it over the coil, throw it back in the hole. A pinpointer isn't oing to really save me any more time - I don't think. I admit openly though, that I could be wrong. I think it would be VERY interesting, and a lot of fun, to have a timed challenge in a salted race, to really see if a skilled hunter saves any time with a pinpointer. Same targets, different depths, same detector, different soils. - I just got a GREAT idea! Share it with you all later!

Terry, I should mention that I never take my Propointer to the beach, so in that respect I agree. I don't need one there as scooping sand is easy.

But when hunting on dry land, oh yes, I take that Propointer with me everywhere. See if you can borrow one for a hunt and then let us know that you think. I'll bet you'll love it.

garrett pro-pinpointer!..

you are correct!..been huntin' over 33 years myself, and NEVER needed a pin pointer, because MY pin pointer was MY detector!
tried a garrett a short while ago,and immediately bought one!..'nuff said!

I like the propointer....instead of shredding a dug dirt clod for the coin I take the same dirt clod and run the pinpointer over it and just dig that spot...my hands are a little arthritic and it saves my hands. Seems like the older you get, the less you quibble about the cost of comfort! I also use an REI self-inflating mattress under my sleeping bag and didn't use anything under it for 30+ years...just getting old I guess. And I also use expensive socks (like I use in my waders for fishing) because of their comfort at $20 per pair for my worn out feet.

a PP is not to replace the PP on your MD,,,, it is for finding the targets you just can't SEE even thou they are right in front you your face,,, it helps with tearing up the ground also ,,, like doing surgery
