Iron Infestation

We have a beach in our area that is totally infested with iron. In your expert opinion, is it better to hunt in iron mode -12 in ferrous or to hunt in 0 to miss all the iron? I hope I am right in what I just asked. I don't use the explorer all that much but I want to. Thanks, Diane
 
I would run it at least -14 and put it in ferrus audio. then just ignore the low tones
 
Hi Diane. We have this problem all over Scotland. If there is a massive amount of iron, and the peices are large, I would run at -16 iron mask. Even at -10 to zero iron mask, large iron will give you false signals (ie cant make up its mind). At -16 you will know when your over iron. As jim has said listen for any high tones ,run at max vari and limits (threshold at 1) so you can hear good targets. SLOW right down and listen for any high pitches, DONT watch the screen. Also I would try and keep my sens down as high levels will attract the iron.Try a low auto sens..

Heavy iron areas tend to run off a lot of other detectorists Diane. Not me, my friends accuse me of "worrying stuff out of the ground." Botton line is what I find in those places, some of the best finds as a rule. Just keep asking questions and spending time in the field. It will all come together before you know it. Davie, Thanks for the advice. The only thing that I don't understand is if you listen for all the high sounds what tone do you hear the gold rings. Or do they sound high like coins also? HH Diane
 
In ferrous mode the gold rings have a very nice mid tone in tests. It goes from left to right with a low tone to the left for iron and increases to a high coin tone all the way to the right. If you have an open screen the high tone to the right sounds the same from the top right corner to the bottom right corner. I just eliminate crown caps and the bottom corner is disc. out.
This is all practice for me and its going to be a few weeks before I get to use the Explorer for the 2nd time. I'm just showing my plan when I can get out.
I'm going to start with Charles high trash program in ferrous mode which disc's out the bottom half of the screen. I then learned in nickels with a med. square and learned in some gold rings with a sm. square. I'm going to leave the top half open so I can hear the iron.
