Interesting talk with our local Garrett repairman

I asked him if I could post that and he asked me if I wouldn't for obvious reasons. He's also very busy since he repairs not only Garrett machines, but Whites and a few other brands as well. If you have a repair issue or need your machine retuned, etc. I'll be glad to pass your contact information along to him and he will call you.

Also I should add the AT-Gold we are talking about, he reset to what the factory SAYS is the proper settings and a full battery charge. Even he admits not every machine out of the factory are identical, but they *SHOULD* be nearly the same.

Threads like this help me in unexpected ways. I dropped my sens three bars and did grass strips in front of houses yesterday. Instead of the usual frantic reducing sens and or frequency changes etc. when under strong EMI, I could just keep moving with noticeable but slight signal interference. Maybe not using headphones made the occasional moderate jittering less irritating also. The point is that I am still learning this machine and it was a surprise to me that I could get satisfying depth in town without jacking the ATP to the max. I think that I have found a recipe for decent depth that allows me to ignore the much reduced EMI. Now I'm not stopping now and then to readjust for strong overhead power lines.

Now try moving it up to 4 or 5 and see if it gets too worse or not.

Actually I was running four bars, because I dropped three down from max. I found this to be a workable compromise for depth and much reduced EMI hassle on grass strips in front of houses, where I often walk under power lines. I'll bump up to five next time I go out and see if the EMI is tolerable. I'm just tweaking until I find my own comfort setting were I don't have to stop and adjust under the lines. I usually just check the first couple of feet from the road on grass strips. I pop the odd 20's copper there and I'm a happy duck. :) This thread still helped me. I was worried about dropping down too much and losing workable depth, it didn't happen, so you helped me G.C. Thanks for all your help\info. :detecting:

I have an ATG which I bought last summer. For 3 days now I have played with the mentioned settings. I hit one target today that tones in like a canadian penny, solid 80-81, it read down close to ten inches. Where I was has lots of mineralized bedrock, iron and such. I adjusted to the 3 bars and got a little squeak, one that perhaps I'd miss, then went back to full sens and what a difference in the ATG seeing it. I also went to disc 1 and iron, it did't grunt at all. I reset back to factory settings which sets 2 bars less of sens, It was there but a whisper. I'm not sure of the claim made but my out in the field test's over the past 3 days does not warrant the claim.

My friend Rick found a tone with his minelab and asked me to swing over it. I for sure would have dug it. It was a 1859 canadian large cent. Not sure yet of the narrow or the wide nine on it. My settings then were full on, all metal, zero disc and iron audio on (I'm trying the iron audio on in all metal with no discrimination. It seems to give a slight more depth for some reason. Anyway it was about 9 to 10 inches down in nice fertile soil, a bit bent but in excellent condition.

As I said, it depends on your soil conditions.

OK, GeorgiaCanuck, I'll PM you with my contact info to pass along to him.

I'm stumped as to what the "obvious reasons" are for an independent metal detector repairman not wanting paying customers.

To refresh your memory, the first two times I asked for Ed's contact info I did so via PM to you. I was one person asking you for contact info via private messaging.

I can't imagine a scenario where one person inquiring about service work would be a problem for someone who is in business to work on detectors.

Since you didn't acknowledge my requests for his information and never mentioned anything about passing along my contact info to him then, I appreciate you being willing to do so now. .

I'll pass your contact info along to him. From your PM's I didn't get that you wanted work done on your detector. It's not that he doesn't want paying customers, but more like he doesn't want his number posted on a public forum and to be flooded with calls.

This is a great thread you started TGC.

I think everyone (as myself) like to find different settings to try for more depth. I realize you were talking about the AT Gold in your first post, but the question was brought up if it would also work with the AT Pro. I was just commenting on that myself.

As for your recent post TGC, with my machine and my ground conditions, I don't get those results. My AT Pro, with more sensitivity added, I get more depth. If I Reduce
sensitivity, I get less depth.

Thanks very much for your response TGC and this thread.

:)
