Went to an old home site today and a guy stopped by and told us he had detected it several times and didn't find anything.

It didn't deter me because I've gone to places I've done several times and missed some good stuff.

There's a guy in my area that uses that tactic to discourage you, then comes back to hunt the site. If challenged by the owner, he throws out that he's your friend and you shared the permission.
