I'm very sorry to report that

I returned my Sovereign GT to the seller to get the Explorer SE.

I really tried to get the hang of the Sov. Maybe if I had taken it out with an experienced Sov. user I could have better understood it.

I've been using an Explorer XS since about the time they first came out so I really know that machine and how it talks to me (which is half the battle as you all well know).

I was really hoping that the Sov. would have been good for me. I'm sure it would have been if I knew it as well as my Explorer.

I really appreciate you folks trying to help me get over the curve.

Maybe in the future I will give it a try again.

I will continue visiting here though and watching your finds with the Sov.

Again, thanks for your help. Just wish it would have worked out for me.

sorry it wasnt the perfect machine for you, I think you made a wise choice though, you know the EX very well so to me it makes sense to go that route. I am glad you are getting what you are comfortable with, that is the most important thing in my opinion, I hope you find somegood stuff from the get go with your new machine ...........take care ..

We All have different reasons for the detectors that we use and like.
I think dedicated hunters using good equipment and knowing how to get the best out of their detector, get a confidence that they will make good finds. If the Explorer gives you that confidence thats the one you should master.
Having said that I like the Sov because to me it is simple to use and set-up and after many hours of swing-time with it I have confidence that it will do the job if I do mine. I never found the Disc tones that difficult to decode, especially when linked to a meter. Now A/M is another matter. Yet , after working with it I'm seeing it has things to tell too. I hunt with a friend who has a 21st century detector with neat Icons and graphs and screen stuff. He loves it. but I'm thinking of taking Art's (OH) advice and chucking my meter. With a good set of headphones I feel I don't need it anymore. Different strokes for different folks. Good luck and good hunting with whatever detector you choose. Don

Whatever works for you mate! Like in life there are some people you click with and others......well its just a fact of life no matter how hard you try to get along with some people your pushing s_hit up hill. I put metal detectors into the same catagory. Go with whatever you feel comfortable with. I will say in the Sov's defence though having used an XS in the past on beaches mainly, it was awsome. I have even found gold with it on one of Australia's goldfields.
Cheers!

Both the Sovereign and the Explorers are great detectors and you will see some prefer one over the other many times. I have a few here that has had both the sold the Explorer as they felt the Sovereign did better while others felt they like the Explorer better. I have seen the Sovereign get targets the Explorer misses and also see where the Explorer will see some the Sovereign misses. Both have a learning curve with the Sovereign a more turn on and go detector and neither one will be great until you learn the detector.
I have them both and use them both too and like I had said before I dig lot less trash with the Sovereign over the Explorer for dirt hunting, both have the same depth for me while the Explorer I can tell my silver and the difference between a dime and a quarter plus silver verses clad. The Sovereign I can tell the nickles from the beaver tails and also the gold better then the Explorer. Like I say they are both great detectors, but for me the Sovereign has put a smile on my face more than the Explorer has, but yet I wont give up either one.
Good luck with the SE and let us know what you think. I find my SE in pitch hold seems to work better for me as I like the tones of the threshold changing with the different targets like the Sovereign plus I seem to be able to run a higher sensitivity on the SE than I could on the XS or the EX II too.

Your the one who pointed out this common addiction. So I'm going meterless until I get it under control. Just thinking about seeing a 178 or 179 I break a sweat. Thinkin about a 160 and I get all figgity. Disc me out

Cut a piece of cardboard the size of the meter face and tape it over the meter along the top so you can flip it up if you really want to.

This will remind you to listen first before you look....or even if you want to look.

Tony,Yoda would have said you have two choices,Jet eye Knight or Meter Reader. You know what happens to Meter Reader's, they come home one-day and take their poor dog to the pound.

i am a beach hutner and use no meter.

i bought a sov. x 2 pro in 93 or 94........turned on set the threshold and sensitivity and never touchd in again. - just turned on and went in search of gold - one switch on and off..........bingo.

sold it in nov..........bought a new GT...........same deal

no curve that i am aware of

best beach machine going - with the WOT attached

my meager 2 cents

If I really wanted an SE I'd have sprung for it first. I've never had an Explorer II. I've had an Explorer XS for years.

For what you do, yes, I agree wholeheartedly, the Sov is a turn on and go machine. But for the type of detecting I do (land, coins etc) it is quite different than the Explorer. The sounds are different than the Explorer. The sweep speed and how it works in garbage is also different.

I'm sorry but I really did try to get used to the Sov. GT.. Like I say, I might try again later. I am glad for you that you are doing so well with it. I have no doubt it is a great ring and gold chain magnet. I know one guy that I've detected with for coins that he swears by his Sov. He finds many nice old coins with it too and posts them on this forum.

Good luck in all your hunting!

i had a exp II for a few years, and then i bought a new SE the first week they came out - kept it two days and like u traded

but i traded for the new GT

it works in garbage - that means zip..........zippo.......nothing is the same in the woods, fiels, beach , water.............just not the same

but i will say in all honesty, the new SE is a great land machine and damp and dry sand.

my GT will not even work in the garage with the wot, yard either

some of the button diggers just north of me have all gone to the F75 - f y i.

Tony

You will be back buying another Sovereign GT.....

I will say the F-75 is light weight, easy to adjust, but to me it loves rusty bottle caps and tin cans. The SE also is a great detector and it too does good, but I do get fooled a lot with rusty nails and pieces of rusty tin cans and maybe if I wouldn't dig so many iffy signals I wouldn't have that problem. Now the GT I find I get fooled very little and when i do it is one of those signals that are just too iffy to leave. I use the Sun Ray meter with the 180 numbers, so between the tones and the meter I can dig more good targets and leave the trash ones for others. I took the F-75 over a yard and got a bit of trash and 1 Wheaties plus a sterling silver ID bracelet at 10 inches, went back with the GT and got very little trash, but got a 1892 barber dime,a 1906 IH and a 1905 V nickle plus 6 more Wheaties. Took the SE there with the 4.5X7 coil and in 3 hours got one new dime plus quite a bit of trash. Now not saying the F-75 is bad or the SE, but in this case the GT seem to work much better and gave much better ID for me. I have been using a Sovereign since 1996, the Explorer since 1999 when they came out and I have around 30 hours on the F-75 so I am still in the learning stage yet. The Sovereigns the tone to me is much better then the Explorer as they will stay longer so you can hear the deeper target better in my opinion.
I feel Tony will be back with a Sovereign again as some just try it and sell it, then read so much about it and get one again, but this time spend more time with it and find out how great it is.
I remember one guy that bought a used Sovereign from me that used to use a XLT and after the first day wanted to send it back, second day he was ready to wrap it around a tree. He stayed with it as we were saying how great it was and in a weeks time or 40 hours he was seeing some great results and by the second week he was picking coin after coins out of area other says was worked out. Last I hear his hunting Buddies wont hunt with him if he brings the Sovereign as he get more with it than all the others together do. He is sure glad he didn't give up like he wanted too after the first few days.
No matter how many detectors I have there will always be a Sovereign in my battery of detectors the same as a Explorer as they are the best.
