no reflection on you personally jim!..have you ever pondered the thought that your detecting just might not be "politically correct" to the fed?..the thought has merit in light of the fact you state the area is NOT posted.
jim!..in my view, this is the correct action, especially when you consider the many sites that lie in wait for your f-75!..as the man stated, and i quote!.."time waits for no man!"

J.T.,
This is similar to an experience I had detecting an old baseball field that had been abandoned. I hunted there for over a year with no problems, then one day, a security guard informed me I couldn't hunt there due to liability issues. I didn't bother pointing out that the parents and kids that played soccer out there didn't seem to have any issues. I just said "ok" and left.
Everything is fine until somebody with a little authority decides to throw it around. More often than not, they are the ones who are being inappropriate, but we are the ones that feel an obligation to engender positive images of our hobby.
Having spent 25 years in the Navy myself, I learned that CO's of downsized bases are not on the fast track for promotion, and usually have a chip on their shoulder.
this is what i was thinking, however didn't feel that going into "detail" so to speak would accomplish anything!..yes i am in agreement, but in my view, the "liability" arguement holds more water and is "probably" the main reason why!..NOBODY, especially the government enjoys being SUED these days!
I don't want to post negative stuff about our hobby but it's important users of detectors should always be prepared for the police to hassle you at some time
or another. OK it may not happen for 20 years on the other hand it could be 20 days it could even be on your first day. The fact is the more you hunt and the longer you hunt the chances are you will be hassled at some point. Some People will always try find an excuse to call the police. Passing police cars will in most part ignore you if they see you metal detecting, they usually hassle you cos some person has phoned them to report you for hunting, once the police arrive you will probably be told to leave the site because of the holes you are digging. People think you are damaging the turf . At the end of the day though there are a lot of reasons you can be told to leave the site other than digging holes as people have said to me before. I personally think a fair amount of people who see you hunting think that you are some sort of a nerd or anti social person. I have talked to a few people who do not metal detect and they all say the same thing that people who detect are seen as nerds or anoraks or whatever you wanna call them.Remember :- Some People will always get a kick from phoning the police about all sorts of trivial things like metal detecting for instance. Be prepared for it because at some point it will happen , you probably will have a copper breathing down your neck! or even worse some stupid clown of an old geezer walking his dog ..........
That is absurd IMO. You can walk on trails, ride horses, hunt deer, hunt turkeys, hunt squirrels, hunt dove, camp out, DIG a fire pit, rattlesnake hunt, and on and on and on. All on most federal lands, but you cannot metal detectMakes me wonder..................Wait, ole Gooberama just might pass another new law saying you can't do any of that. Nothing surprises me nowadays.......................
A funny story on the side-if ya'll don't mind. Several years back, I was detecting at a school where my best friend and I went sometimes-he was a deputy Sherriff. Well, this security guard started ogling me and it was very obvious from the get-go that I was gone. I even told him the name of one of the teachers who told me it was ok to detect there. Well, have THAT teacher tell me was his response. Anywho, I left-but wouldn't you know my best friend stopped there on his patrol. Well, this security guard began building me up as a haggard hobo, a homeless derelict who was scratching around for whatever to get by on. My best friend asked what I was driving and he described my van. The security guard asked him "Why, do you know him?". "Yeah-he's my best friend". The silence said it all.
