As much as I wanted this one to be the real deal, it didn't add up. Passed the acid test but the color on the rubbing stone didn't look right. Moved on to specific gravity test and got 8.5. Not anywhere near the density for gold. There's plenty of online posts about these being faked in China. (Yah, who would have thought) Seems like I saw another one dug not long ago...anyway it was good to get out for a little park hunting.

I got my Cartier to, didn’t feel right but got me pumped up to. I put serial number on google and said many fakes with that number. The stamp looks good but diamonds didn’t test out. Hope you have better luck, you never know. Good luck.

Pending question: I wonder just how much somebody paid for it originally? Some goon selling out the trunk of his Yugo should have been the first warning sign.

Mike, how do you do a specific gravity test? Is it just water displacement or involved a more exact process?

Hi Tony-
First, weigh your object ( I use grams because it makes the math easier). Write down your results.
Next, get a small container with water in it. I use a Rx pill bottle 2/3 full. Put it on the scale and zero the scale.
Now, suspend the object in the water using a string or something with almost no weight. I often use the wire from a bread wrapper. Make sure the object is completely submerged without touching the sides of your container. Write down your result.

First measurement ÷ second measurement = specific gravity.

24k gold = 19 specific gravity. There are tables online for the specific gravity of different karats and metals.

So in my test, the 3 g ring ÷ .35 g = specific gravity of 8.5.

Hope this makes sense.

It's shocking to see them online for $500 plus. The legit ones are double that. The people selling them as replicas are getting about $20.
 
My friend found a Tiffany 18k it was a fake some have a heavy gold plate you really have to take a file to it then acid to be sure …
