ID segments

may be easier to hunt with in iron...people need to keep in mind that easier ain't always "better"

THANKS BILL(CANEWRAP)!!, I appreciated the extra effort, that clears things up. The way you run the X-70 you must dig alot of trash as it sounds like you dig everything in the +(plus) numbers BUT going by "tone" will help you weed out the good from the bad and the ugly too.

Also below, your idea of hunting in Prospecting Mode in low trash areas for max depth and then switch over and double check targets in Coin/Treasure Mode after. You are a die hard digger digging most things!!

"...maximize depth by using a combination of prospecting and coin/treasure to determine how deep my targets are and actually dramatically increase my recovery rate and dig most things. I try not to use discrimination at all, if I can help it as it robs the machine of depth..."

And also thanks Randy for your posts. You put this on FAQFAQ is what you mean when you said, "I'll add it!", I think. Yes, it is worthy of that!

Well sometimes you get trash signals in meneralized soil jumping around but you can get signals that are confusing because there is another item in with it. Howard

Yep, I'm a relic hunter and we do dig most targets. If I find myself in an area with a lot of nails, after I've dug a few I can usually start to ignore them based on number and sound, but that's probably the only junk target I consistently don't dig once I figure out what they sound like. But, again if its a Civil War site I'll even keep digging those signals as there are several things (like fuze primers) that register the same.

hey Digger, can't tell you how much I appreciate all your...Diggs'..for a lack of better terms.
this 705 is alot more has more intrigue than I imagined when I bought it.
but that is all the more fun for me. I find myself going over old ground with my three different
coils till my brain farts...and then go to bed dreaming of tomorrow's sweeping's.
Sometimes I have to take my BH Qsilver along just to cool down... :detecting: One thing,
a suggestion if you will that maybe we could all suggest to minelab....a 28 hour day mode.
just a click of a button and you get 4 more hours per day......:minelab:
if they can't do it then no-one can...lol

You will most likely find that the secret of the E-Trac, is setting it up so that you can tell by tones as to whether you have a coin or not. After reading a post by one of the E-trac guys last week, I changed the audio on my Explorer and coins, pull tabs a screw caps became easily recognisable. The guys on the E-Trac forum seem to find the same thing of the E-Trac.
When I bought the Explorer (XS), I thought that the ferrous/conductive numbers would give it an edge on ID, but it doesn't take much to throw the numbers. I found a $1 coin that showed as a 24. It should have come up as a 27. Although we have no coins that come up on that number here in Oz, the sound was too sweet to ignore, so I dug it. It had a small amount of corrosion on it which is why the numbers were off. Same goes for most machines.
Just a thought.

As so many factors come into relative ID, personally find the XT-70 to be quite accurate and more segments is always better but in the long run those that learn their unit and dig some of the iffies seem to get the goodies that others have missed. Unfortunately many of the segments can be junk that imitates perhaps a good coin or nice gold ring and thats why the relic hunters with no ID(beep and dig) seem to really come up with some nice finds.. Selective digging certainly has its plus and minus features but again the
XT 70 28 segments which basically cover 4 digits in a 1-100 basis and works just fine for me..After a while tones, audio variances and just a gut feeling all come into play....

Hi, as for using the XT 70 as a no frills, no VID machine, I have such machines which I alternate using with my X Terra 70. When I bought my X Terra I already had on VID machine. but the XT is sopmething altogether different, and took me to a new place in metal detecting. As far as relying on the visual display is concerned, I rely just as much, if not more on the tones and the sould of the signal. e.g. our $2 coin normally gives a reading of 30, as do many screw caps. But the audi signal which a $2 coin gives is narrower and more "solid" than a screw cap. I still dig plenty of screw caps. At the beach about 18 months ago in the wet sand I was digging lots of bottle caps...got a signal which was the same as all the others and got a watch, not an expensive one, but good enough and still working and 18 months later my daughter is still wearing it to school and other places. The next day. in the wet sand again got a signal of 28..Could be $2..turned out to be an 11.4 gm 18Kt gold ring. Moral of the story is that you can watch numbers until the cows come home, but you wont see what you've found until you dig it up. As the age old saying goes.."If at first you dont succeed, skydiving is not for you" HH Sapper
