I would very much appreciate some opinions

I am getting ready to purchase my first detector. I am limited in what brands and models I can buy, here are my choices.

X Tera 30
X Tera 50
Bounty Hunter Sharp Shooter II
Bounty Hunter Time ranger
Bounty Hunter Discovery
Fisher F5

The X Tera 50 is at the very edge of my price range, it's actually beyond it but I could do it. I live in Fl so I know I will be wanting to go to the beach, and other than that I would like to go relic hunting in a few areas I have in mind. I hope some of you experienced guys can offer me some suggestions and explanations so I can make a good choice. My only opinion so far is that the X teras look well made and comfortable. Thanks for any help. Nick

None of them you have listed , I would buy a good used Xterra 70 since you listed beach and relic hunting.

PS From your list however I would probably go for the Xterra 50 because it does have GB that affects both all-metal and disc mode. From now on, I will only detectors that have manual GB (not preset).

I agree with Steve, buy the x-terra 50 if you cant find a used x-70. Minelabs are great detectors. I love my x-70 !

Hi Nick.
I would personally go with the X-Terra 30.
I don't know anything about the Fisher F5 so I can't make an intelligent comment on it. I have owned a Bounty Hunter before and can tell you that they are nowhere near the performance of the X-Terra's.
To date, the X-Terra 30 was the easiest detector that I've come across, for ease of learning. it is a very pleasant machine to use. I have played around with an X-Terra 70 a few times now. they're a great machine and perhaps I'll buy one down the track, but I've had the 30 for 3 years now, and to be honest, I don't think that it give up that much performance behind the other 2 X-Terra's. yes they've got more bells and whistles, but if you are mostly coin hunting, then you'll be very happy with the 30.
there's plenty of good help on this forum as well. The guys here are very helpful and it will very handy to have the advice here as you first start out.
Good luck with which ever detector you buy.
Mick Evans.

I bought my X-terra 50 on E-bay used and it has been great. Think I paid about 350.00 Bought my X-Terra 70 on E-bay used for about 500.00 and it works great too. I figured if I needed to send any in to be fixed I still saved allot of money. But the people that are usually selling them didn't use them very much so I gained by their loss.

The X-Terra 70 is a great machine, but if you're starting out it may be too much of a detector for you. The X-Terra 50 will work well with what you want to do, coin and relic hunting. It's also good for use on the Fl beaches. Here's a link on it's performance, X-Terra 50 in Cabo

For the features it has compared to the X-Terra 30 you can visit Minelabs web site at Here

As for my experience with it, all I can say is :minelab: rocks :hot::hot::hot::detecting:

I would look for a less expensive used--Second Hand--- X-Terra 70 or Sovereign GT.

second hand is not really an option for me, the models I listed are the ones that are available at the retailer where I have the gift card and the $$$$ to shop. So I am limited to what I listed. I have about narrowed it down to the X50 or biting the bullet and going for an X70 but a poster above mentioned that an X70 might be to much to soon. That is a valid point!

XTerra 70 to much of a detector????? What does that mean? It's so easy to pick up and detect!! One of the easiest to learn and very capable for most types of detecting... Go with the 70 and never look back as you'll have a great detector and options!!!

Too much detector.
No way. It is not difficult at all. Plus I think you will wish you bought the x70 when you primarily hunt beaches.

Go for the 70, you'll be happy you spent the extra $. It is a much more versatile machine and you'll be happier in the l-o-n-g run. It is easy to learn yet gives the options of more specific types of hunting.

Well the x50 is out of stock and I have the go ahead form the Admiral (wife) to go with the X70. I think that is going to be it. Ihave not push the button yet, but so far I like it most

Welcome to the 70 club!! I just bought mine about 3 weeks ago and at first I was totally bewildered, confused struck looking at the manual, and thought this is a very hard one to learn BUT now it is so easy and second nature and it all fell into place and you will pick it up and master it in no time.

If you can get permission from your wife, get the round 10.5" 7.5kHz (medium frequency) DD for your dry beach sand and relic hunting, as that is what I want to get.

Also go to the FAQFAQ post link at the top of the main X-Terra page for invaluable info.

Not everyone wants a detector with more added features than what the X-Terra 50 has. For where I'm located, the extra money for the XT70 is better in my pocket as many of the features the 70 has will never be used. So yah, some would consider the X-Terra 70 to much of a detector. If I lived elsewhere where I could use the full capabilities of the X-Terra 70, then I would have one. Let the consumer decide what is appropriately needed!

I'm new to the X70, but I own two other Minelabs, and two Tesoros, and started on an old Whites 4900 D twenty years ago. I can tell you my own experience when I started out. If you "settle" for a detector to learn on with the mind set to increase the features as you learn, you are going to cost yourself more money in the long run. I say this because the X70 is a turn on and go machine as much as the 30 and 50 are. Learn your detector one step and a time, and as time passes you will not have to trade in a used model on one with more features. You will be like the rest of us that will have a favorite detector for general use, and specialize in detectors for specific types of hunting. The X70 has the ability to "specialize" with the addition of search coils as opposed to buying a new detector for gold, or relic hunting, or beach hunting/coin shooting. If you start out with the coin shooting/beach hunting, it will work for the relics with specialized needs by changing coils instead of changing detectors. You will save money in the long run, and have a good deal of fun learning the differences in how you hunt each time you change the coil. If you spend a little extra now, it will save you time and money later. Just my opinion, of course.

But............there is light at the end of the tunnel. Sticking to a budget is hard at times and most of the time we always end up exceeding it anyway. The three main questions you need to ask yourself are...................1) How often am I going to be able to get out and use the machine? 2) Are there going to be extras I will need to buy later on down the track? and 3) This is a great hobby theres no doubt about it but I have known quite a few people to go out and get the best equipment money can buy only to get sick of it or bored soon after, so ask yourself am I one of those people? Now keeping those questions in mind the only advice I can give you is to try before you buy...........I know for a fact that this can save you ALOT of $$$$. If you can do this or arrange this with your local dealer that would be fantastic. I hope this has helped you.
Cheers!

The X 70 is my first detector and i just gave the book a quick look and went out. No idea at all as to what i was doing But after reading the helpfull and supportive posts here I have learnt so much. Just go at your own pace and enjoy the walk , your in good company.

I'd buy a used X-terra 70 it is the BEST detector I have ever used. And as far as being hard to use? That is so false. I watched the DVD before the detector even got here, and when It did I assembled it and went outside with the manual in my hand, did the settings right there while trying it in my yard.

It was so easy, noise cancel, put in All Metal, then auto ground balance. Takes less than one minute, and you are ready to detect. There is nothing difficult about this detector. It is good for all people no matter what your level of experience. Don't let a couple posters here make you think this is a difficult detector. I think if you get this one, you will be super happy!

As Treasure Nut stated, "It's up to the consumer." I do agree but, you may not use all the features where you live at this point but what about vacations? Do you ever leave the area you're at? It's nice to have the options and in all actuality the cost difference is not that much. You requested an opinion and like others I am giving mine. A used detector is always an option. I liked the idea of a warranty. If your low on the $ and want a detector you can always take the time, save a little more and get what you want. If you buy the 50 you may wish you had the 70 and visa verse. The best start you made is asking for an opinion, looking at different models and then deciding.
