I tried my hand at relic hunting this morning

Larry (IL)

and I don't think the V3 did too bad for 4 1/2 hours of detecting. Super hot on the little stuff and bullets down to 10+ inches. I used the Hi-Pro program pretty much stock, but I did lower the recovery delay down to 60 from my normal 80 for coin hunting.

Save that place, and leave a little for me, I should be there Tuesday. Great finds. How did the bullets ID? Rob

I already thought of you and permission secured.............

Larry thats awesome finds that would be a good day around here in Gettysburg area, should be some Eagle Buttons lurking in the ground

Nice finds Larry. I couldn't find a button or button-back all weekend! Those white bullets look as good as a silver coin in the hole. Sure puts a smile on your face.

I forgot to answer your question Rob........ The dropped ones come in +50 to +60 and the rest, down to the 40's and some of the small stuff down in the teens. I pretty much dug everything in the non-ferrous zone, even dug a modern shotgun shot, I'm guessing a #6 which is pretty small. It was only an inch deep but came in loud and clear and a sun-of-a-gun to pinpoint, even with the SunRay. The V3 has to be very hot on the gold nuggets, as I was very impressed with the V today.

Yep, that is a good day for NW GA too.

You done good Larry.

Man... if you two guys get together sometime later this year I sure would like to hunt with you. I'm not interested in getting into your good sites, just learning from you guys would be awesome. Heck, i'd just like to put on my WHPs and tag along.

What if...

Larry or Rob or anyone... put on a seminar? A weekend, require everyone to have WHPs and teach people who are struggling or new to the V3 how to interpret what the V3 is saying. How to set it up correctly... how and when to use things like correlate and wrap, etc, etc, etc...

For instance...

Day1: Have a site where there are known targets, maybe a planted relic and coin garden with both good targets and partially masked targets, and of course, trash targets. Run through the basics then teach everyone how you hunt. The small class would all have the WHP on your channel so that they would hear what you hear, everyone could take a look at the search screen, the analize screen, see how you pinpoint, then make their guess about the target. Then teach how to properly recover the target.

Day 2: Maybe go to a a park with both native and planted targets. This time you use wired headphones and have all the students on different channels, using the WHPs. It would be a chance to teach everyone how to set up to use a different channel for the WHP. Then the teacher could be available for each student, when needed, like on an iffy target or for anything really to plug in and help the student to learn. The teacher can observe all the students and offer advice on detecting basics and on the V3. You could have a few deep targets and a few "iffy" targets for everyone to swing over, again making their guess, then recover it. Suggest different things if you think it would help... just anything you have to offer. The teacher could hear everything the student hears, observe the swing speed and technique... just so much could be taught and learned.

Maybe it's just me (but I don't think so)... I think someone like Rob, Monte, Larry, or anyone who is experienced, confident, and who really knows the V3 could do a few classes like this and both make money and do a real service to those of us who need a little help with the V3 (most of us are here on these forums to learn) and the technology is in place for this with the V3.
I don't know how much you could charge but if you had a class of 10 it should be managable and profitable. Throw in a door prize and bury a few coins marked to represent a nice relic to be given away... maybe get White's to donate something for the students like a shirt or something... maybe its a crazy idea but i'd like it.

Personally I would be interested!. I think it could be a real help to me and to others. The V3 has so much potential but can be frustrating. What do you think? Sign me up!

Glad to see you made it there. Nice day, Larry. Definitely a kick to hunt.

That is possible Julien, but I would think you could find a dealer or V3 user closer to home to spend an afternoon with you. There really is no trick to finding the relics and coins, especially the relics, if it beeps in the +VDI's, dig it. I never try to figure out what is under the coil because it could be anything and sometimes is. I adjust the Disc sensitivity and RX to run stable and I reduced the recovery delay a little bit due to the nails in the ground, but other than that I use the Hi-Pro factory program. Getting the maximum depth is the least of my worries, it goes plenty deep for me. Many users make using the V3 a lot harder than it really is. Go out and hunt and have fun and you might try a different adjustment or two on a deep target. The more you hunt, the smarter you will get with the V3 and I very seldom use the analyze screen because the bar graph on pinpoint tells me what I want to know about the target.

I hear you Jason. I can't say I am addicted, but in the 30 years I've been detecting, I never had a strong interest in civil war relics. I think I was sick that day in school when the war was covered..... Nancy bought me a book on the Civil War for Christmas and I found it a good read and now the relics mean something to me. I have done some reading on the local history of the War and have become really interested in it now, and I can tie the relics I find into actual events that happened 150 years ago.

One example is the battle of Island #10 near Southern Illinois when the Union Navy was regaining control of the Mississippi. The captured confederates were brought back to where I was hunting in a Union training and prison camp. It is pretty neat visualizing soldiers and the activity from 150 years ago right there in a corn field that I'm hunting in. Being my first time relic hunting, was a "ghostly" experience. This is a picture of a print I bought long before I knew of any link to the Illinois camp site that I have been hunting.

Cool picture relic hunting is all about the history. Island 10 has had some huge shells dug off of it in the past.
From what i heard the battle was on a rainy night and alot of the shells fired from the boats did not explode.

im glad you enjoyed yourself! im really glad you found some stuff! i really love going down there and hunting that spot, its what i look most forward to doing on the weekends. a great place to relax and find some really cool history!

Thanks big time Drew, the three hours driving and the gas money seem to make it all worth while. It was somewhat eire, yet content hunting that spot.

I know exactly what you mean. Next time, if you get a chance, visit the cemetary down the road and check out all of the confederate graves. I did that during the winter with some snow on the ground (you saw the pics) and just thought about how sad it was that those guys never made it back to the south after the war. But at the same time everything was so peaceful and a really nice walk.
