I Think I Have Bought My Last Tesoro

Hate to say it. I have used Tesoro for years now and I don't know what brand I'm going to switch to, but I think the time has come to hang it up with Tesoro.

3 of the last 4 units I have bought from Tesoro have all been defective right out of the box.

The first was a Cibola that was wildly mistuned. Nickels were discriminating out at below the FOIL level. So it had to go in for repairs.

The next was a 5.75" coil Compadre that could not pick up a single target and then just started beeping wildly even when no metal was nearby. No, it wasn't EMI. Heck, it couldn't pick up metal playground equipment unless you were practically scrubbing the coil on the swing set. So it had to go in for repairs too.

Now I've just opened my 8" coil Compadre and Nickels are completely discriminating out at the "L" in "FOIL", well below the Nickel mark.

So I'll have to send in yet another to be fixed.

And then, I think, once it comes back, the time has come to unload them all.

Tesoro has developed some really bad quality control issues from my point of view, and enough is enough.

I am really disappointed in the company right now.

Seems very strange to me, I have bought many Tesoro detectors (new & used) over the years and have never had a problem.

I can't understand it.

All were bought brand new from different licensed Tesoro dealers.

That's too bad....... I've got one that's 23yrs old that has given me a bazillion coins and not an ounce of trouble? I did send it in for a checkup two yrs ago and everything was fine although they did rebuild the coil and replaced some battery holders that were cracked....no charge. I've moved on to bigger and better but that old Tesoro really served me well back in the day...........

Just a though, could it just be knob problem? It may be a simple fix for you to just loosen the set screw and set knob pointer to the right position. Before sending it back just check and see, I have done this adjustment on a lot of detectors.

But I am like you I think all the machines coming off the line should be right or they should be running them back through for corrections. I really hate to hear people saying I got a hot one, they all should be hot.

Good luck,

Ron in WV

I have never had an issue with Tesoro reliability or quality.
Your expericences sound very odd.
Do you own a Cat or a Dog?
How about a wife, maybe kids?

Hi Sven. I have a dog, but, that isn't a factor. These were all defective units right out of the box. No one touched the units but me.

I am just stunned by all this. I used to have total confidence in them.

anyone else buy a new one and have problems?

I have not any trouble out of any of my Teoros new or used in the past 25 years like you are talking about, but since I have only had 15 or so but I guess it is possible :shrug:good luck with your x-terra you will be back believe me,

I just received my new Vaquero and there is no issues with it at all. I am excited about getting away from metered machines.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your detector/s,in all the years that i have been detecting and i do still own many of them i have never had one bad machine.Of course anything either electronics or mechanically can and does break down its just the way with consumer items, but the amount of machines that have gone wrong with yourself is way above what would normally happen in the real world,so although i am assuming you are a experienced detectorist and have full knowledge of how a detector works and what all the controls do and how they interact with one another, could it be and i dont like to say this be operator error rather than all the these machines going wrong ???

Of course you may just be the most un-lucky consumer on the planet, but something is fundamentally wrong,of course i do hope i am wrong, but my assumption is based on not only what experience i have with detectors over many years but also most of the other forum members are saying in-directly the same thing. Please dont take this post personally but if i had similar types of problems i would take a step back and see if it maybe just operator error.

As above you will always find a detector or detector related item going wrong and most manufactures will bend over back words to make you a happy customer, sometimes a person just cannot GEL with a detector, but to have 4 detectors go wrong and you still went back to using the same brand again and again after experiencing problems is also not the norm.

Good luck and hope it all sorts itself out.

Sorry to hear about your detector problems. I have two older Tesoros that I bought used. I haven't had a problem with them. My compadre I have had for 5 years and it has performed flawlessly, I bought it brand new. I wish you the best. HH

bummer , that sort of stuff happens in 3's isn't that the saying, try moving the knobs on the disc issues maybe they were put on wrong? Tesoro is not the place it was before Jack died sorry to say that so we miss you Jack !!!

AJ

When you sent the Cibola and 5.75" Compadre back to Tesoro, what was the diagnosis on the two units? I know it is frustrating when things don't work as they should.

whats worse is a problem they don't find and keep sending it back . something may be wrong and they don't find it

On the Cibola, nickels were discriminated out below the FOIL tab. I sent it in and it was fixed.

On the 5.75" Compadre, it would pick up any targets and would barely pick up a metal swing unless I held the coil right next to the bars. Also, it would start beeping wildly for no reason at all (not EMI, that produces a different static from what I heard). I sent it in and it reportedly been fixed.

On the 8" Compadre I just got, nickels are now discriminating out a FOIL and modern pulltabs discriminate out at NICKEL. So I'm sending that one in also.

I have tried many detectors, but always came back to the Tesoro Compadre.

For me, in my soil and my hunt

Yes, all three of these were brand new, straight out of the box, recent purchases.

Not looking to beat a dead horse here.

Just felt very disturbed by all this and was wondering if anyone else who had recently bought any Tesoros was having the same problem.

It might just be my lousy luck.

Ok, I am calmer now. Tesoro sent my 5.75" compadre back today and it seems fine now. They had to replace the whole coil.

My 8" compadre goes out tomorrow
