After Randy found the silver 3 center yesterday I had him simply place it on the ground, just to see what it hit like. I was amazed that with all my settings the exact same except threshold I couldn't get a beep. Having your threshold set too high is not good! After dropping the threshold to just barely audible, 4 in this case, made the X70 come to life. Now I wonder how many coins I've missed by carelessly not setting the threshold properly?? :rage:
Just thought it was worthy of mentioning.

Good tip. I'm trying it out in 10 minutes!

What number did you drop your threshold too, mine is always on 12 sorry just read your post again I did not see you had put number 4 on, Thank's for the tip.

Thank You

Thanks for that tip I keep mine low but I will have to check and see how low. That is a good lesson, Beale.

That's 4 with headphones... right? When I remove the headphones, the threshold automatically resets to 12.

been cranking down the threshold on my Excal and I seem to be finding more deep stuff. There was a post by Gulf Hunter on the Surf forum in which he recommends setting the threshold a notch below barely audible to essentially silent search. It seems to work in the surf really well as the false signals greatly decrease. Now to try it on the X-70. Thanks for the observation.

12 is the factory default for Speaker. The Volume & Threshold settings are independent for Headphone & Speaker. i.e. You could set Headphone Threshold to 3 & Speaker Threshold to 7.

If you would take me to a few more of these places, I'll give you some more tips. Randy

Threshold was set too high. That's why it is best to use good headphones if you're going to use Threshold on any detector. Depending on how good your hearing is you may push the Threshold higher than it should be in order to hear it from the loudspeaker. With some detectors there is no Threshold tone in Disc mode which can really bushwhack you if you don't keep it in mind. You can have a $1K detector, and some kid with a Compadre is going to come behind you and kick your butt because your Threshold is not adjusted correctly. "Silent search" can become "silent killer" of targets if you don't go through a checklist when starting up those types of detectors. If you set the Threshold to a big negative number, the same can happen on the X-Terra's, but a simple 3 second effort of working the menu button will show you where you are at.

As a point of reference with Nugget Buster headphones, volume on headphones down one click from full, X-Terra volume at 30 I can hear the Threshold comfortably at 3. At the ocean with major wind & wave action I push it to 6, but never any higher. But I normally don't use Threshold and leave it at 0(zero) which is my preference. As can be seen in the X-Terra manual, probably the worst thing you can do is turn the Threshold way up and then turn the Volume way down to offset how loud the tone is in your ear. A sure recipe for missing all sorts of goodies!

Ya see, tips like this is why it is so important to belong to and read a forum with so many wise people. Thanks to all that I have learned from and that is quite a few.

After reading this post...I took my X-70 to the back yard and conducted the same test as described by Bill. I placed my three cent piece on the ground and passed my X-70 over it. Nothing. I checked my threshold and it was set at 14. I reset to 4 and sure enough it TID. Thanks for the information....tip. Best dang forum on the net.

If Bill hadn't brought it up it some X70 users would'a been running with blinders on. This may be a factor of unexplained performance differences for a lot of diverse users of the X70.

Mine was on 14 also, BIG mistake!!! Live and learn I guess.
Thanks for the double check.

Cause if it is set to 4 in Discriminate I can't hear the threshold even with the limiter off and vol. on detector and Timberwolf ear phones at max. . Now in Prospect I can just bearly hear it and it has to be dead quite to hear it. Guess I will just set it to 4 both in Prospect and dis. Thanks :D: :D: Jerry aka Tinfoil

Great info. I was running mine too high also. I'm wondering what I missed now. Gives me a good excuse to go back to the areas I've detected in the past.

Thanks, John K

Jerry, Mine set at 4 in discriminate mode is audible. I am using Killer B Hornets and they are great. I imagine different headphones would be a factor. Is your volume set at 30 (Max) on the X70? I would suggest field testing and see what works best for you.
