i did not like the news i got today from las vegas

Hi Mr. Braithwaite,

You have a real problem. We no longer modify any minelab product. Which means we do not put on any one else

Well Minelab, this kind of narrow thinking just cost you an Excal II sale from this hunter. Fact is, I love Excals, BUT I like the Gray Ghost Underwater Headphones, because their quality surpasses the stock Koss, imo. I have owned 3 of them and was considering buying another new unit. In this kind of economy, narrowmindedness of this nature will hamper your ability to improve the bottom line. It is not like we are asking ya'll to warranty the headphones, Gary Storm will see to that, but hey we like to use the best, why are you treating loyal customers like this? Hey, we water hunters may be a bit more high maintenance, than your average land guy, but think about how much more net profit comes from the sale of an $1100 unit, as compared to a dumpy land machine. I am NOT HAPPY with this decision!

Hey therover, Joe of South Jersey has another source for the installation I believe, but it WILL void the warranty according to Minelab.

If this can get overturned or amended, I will buy another unit from you. Just tell them you have customers waiting in line, but we want something a little more high tech than stock and maybe that will get them off of this REDICULOUS decision. If I told customers in my business that they could NOT modify their units and that modifying them would void their warranty, I would have been out of business a LONG TIME AGO!

Holy moly:ranting: I just purchased a new pair of GG underwater with the plug already installed. All I need is to send my new excaly to put a bulkhead
on the detector damn:ranting::rant:

Damm Damm Damm:ranting::veryangry:
MINELAB:ban:

Not too certain on how many I can do, but I have stock on hand to do the headphone conversion on the Excal.

If interested, drop me a email at: wcrabtre@comcast.net.

you just might see a change in the stock Excal...mabe they will up-grade there head phones soon!

This is what I was thinking. They may make the coils interchangable as well.

others that we can buy the alkilde battery pod and just use the plug part....................buy and sent to mr bill

i like it when a plan comes together fast.

thanks mr bill - u have helped many of us out for many years.

About a month ago I called them to set up putting Grey Ghosts on my excal 1000. I was told to send the machine they would take care of it. I was having the phones shipped from Dixie Metal Detectors in TN and they told him the same thing. The same day I talked to them I put the machine in the mail. UPS. That was on a Tuesday. They received the machine and headphones on Friday. I received a phone call to inform me of their new policy. After trying to explain to them that I was told to send it and all was fine, they bluntly told me that they couldn't do it anymore and there would be no exceptions. They wouldn't even do mine after they told me to send it and they had it. David at Dixie even called and they told him the same thing. I even tried to get the tech to do it on his own time and he wouldn't do it. I was PO'ed.

I was told by someone after I sent my machine in to them, that the modifications were taking up too much time and they weren't getting the warranty work done. But I was also told by minelab that even if they did the conversion that it would now void the warranty and they could no longer do the mods. Mr. Bill already has my machine. I FedEx'ed it to him last week after minelab sent mine back.

I feel lucky. I must have gotten mine just before the crap policy change. The problem is not Minelabs problem. It is an industry problem. Why can't they sit down and agree on a common standard for all u/w or land headphones? No matter if it's a Tiger Shark, a CZ, an LS, etc. their oughta be one headphone connector (or optional adapters) for all machines. It isn't a particular style connector that is a deciding factor in a particular headphone purchase. In retrospect, I think we have a standard for land machines, again after Minelab dummied up, and stopped the 1/8 connector. I'd like to love Minelab, but the 'new' company is going to lose a big following if they continue down the same road. This comes from an E-Trac, SE, Excalibur owner. Me thinks the folks at Minelab, in management, are cut from the same tree as is AIG, Enron, etc. Regards...Jim

Minelab just keeps shooting themselves in the foot. I luckly
had my Grey Ghosts put on last year after sending into minelab.
If I would have had to use those crappy Koss phones I think I would
have ended up throwing the entire machine away. Also what the hell
was Minelab thinking with making the phones yellow? It's bad enough
that the phones were crappy. But to make them yellow so you look like
a freaking killer-Bee on the beach and to make the rest of the machine
green-neon so it looks like a 2 year olds super soaker water gun. Why not
make the machine and phones a cool looking Camo color. We are "Hunters"
after all. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like a business decision to me. Money always is the prime directive.

The good news is that the upgrades are easy to do. Just check into my postings from the past on this forum and I give info on how to do it yourself.

It is easy and when done correctly, is as waterproof as a new machine with no mods.

I am betting that the next version of the Excalibur II will have Ikelite connector for the headphones already installed. Along with a more ergonomic shaft and a detachable coil.

A machine like the Excalibur is asking to be modified and the easier it is to modify, the more sales will be made of that machine. Just like the Honda cars...lots of modifications that are easily made....and they sell tons of them.
