I despise these metal detecting shows on TV.

There is one reason and one reason only more areas are being banned to detecting.
Fools sitting on their couch watching a DIGGERS metal detecting show getting all excited thinking they can make tons of $$$ metal detecting.
Then they go to the park with a post hole digger and re-create the surface of the moon.

Uninformed, misguided, weekend warriors.

These shows need to stop showing the "prices" that one can get for a crappy condition King George Copper.
These shows need to OVERSTATE again and again how to dig a hole with a drop cloth etc.
They should have a YOUTUBE link put on the TV screen where all the videos are about metal detecting ethics.

I loathe these metal detecting shows!

I had an opportunity to get an AT-PRO added to my arsenal. I wont now since I do not want to look like a fool
detectorist looking for "juice".

the shows are not the reason places are becoming banned. trash being left on the ground by the hole, unfilled holes, shallow holes in dry soil that get pulled out by the mower. the park keepers probably don't watch the shows but the see the damage done to the parks.

I have to agree with JASON, since Garrett sponsors the Diggers show, I will boycott both of them,

The shows do get too many of the wrong type people in the hobby who just don't care. They have no love of history just whats valuable or how many silver coins they can get in a year to impress there newbee buddies and be the ''big man''. We lost a lot of are sites because of this. Get ready as there is a new show on the horizon I hear. I guess they won't be happy until every public place is closed to detecting and it will happen in time as it already has started.

And who do you think is leaving the trash and not filling the holes.
Yes, the hobby has had it's share of these culprits in the past. But the TV shows have brought the issue to the forefront.

If all detectorist started doing cart-wheels screaming "I got nectar from my detector" .......Well it's know wonder people turn away saying to them self .....this fool is not getting near my property !!! Can't blame them ,when that's how they act !

Yes use cloth for soil and care fill up holes! I don't like to see their large shovel that my fear is someone see it and use shovel to make large holes in public park then might be shut down metal detecting!

I've never watched any of these shows, don't want to, though I'm interested, what detector do they use the most in these shows?

If the actions of those Idiots on Diggers do not contribute to the problem then I will eat your Hat.

I was invited by the lady of the house to detect a one acre property where according to her Confederate troops camped during the "Recent Unpleasantness".

Her husband saw One episode of Diggers and he said "I will not allow people who act like that on my property". I could not convince him that I was not one of those Idiots

If I were Garrett I would be ashamed to even allow them to use my brand of detectors.

The Diggers show on National Geographic is sponsored by the Garrett metal detector company, they use either the AT Pro or the AT Gold.

I could not stand to watch very much of their shows, on one episode when Ringy Dingy dug up the lever of a Daisy BB gun and claimed it was off a Winchester or Henry lever gun, I turned the TV off in disgust.......never to be watched again !

lots of different people leave the trash and holes and its not all newcomers or people that have watched these shows. I have been hunting since 1973 and I've seen lots of experienced hunters too lazy to pick up the trash or fill their holes. I like to read or watch anything about metal detecting.if there's something wrong with the show or magazine article we need to let the sponsors, station, forum or magazine know about it. don't stop the entertainment because of a few people who don't know how to act. there's a show coming in the future on the discovery channel and it sounds interesting and I don't believe it will have the silliness of the other show.

That show is spawning hundreds if not thousands of newbies many of whom are idiots who have no clue regarding metal detecting ediquette let alone how to dig and replace a proper plug. The more these metal detecting shows become popular the more areas that are going to be banned. Its happening already.

I've seen holes not filled, holes shabbily filled, shallow plugs sucked up and thrown feet away by park lawn mowers, junk laying next to dried up plugs... the list goes on and on.
Don't you think park attendants and the public see these eyesores also?

yes they see them, they saw them in 1973. they are not caused by these shows they are caused by lazy, inconsiderate people who have probably never one of these shows. several years ago at Treasure Week the last hunt of the week we were asked to be especially careful filling our holes because the field was leased from a neighbor and needed to be left in good shape. the fellow next to me keep leaving the holes unfilled. when I told him to fill his holes he said its just a cow pasture. I said but its not your cow pasture. he said just dig you dimes and leave me alone. if the shows are causing problems the people in charge should be notified

Chuck. Don't you realize what we are saying? Of course there have been and will be lazy experienced detectorists, we agree.
But these shows have brought more amateurs into the hobby who don't value history than any other medium in the past.
You keep on responding as if we are saying a film reel with arms, legs, and a detector
are digging the holes and not filling them as well as trespassing. We know the " show" is not doing the damage.
It is the irresponsibility of the shows and lack of promoting detecting ethics from the shows
and the audience it attracts which is doing the damage.
Why can't you see that?

Yes out of any given population sample, a certain percentage will be idiots. Back then the population sample was tiny, now its huge...do the math!

I was one of the handful of detectorists back then when the hobby was basically in its 'nerdy' infancy. Its the numbers of people getting into the hobby due to the popularity of those shows. No longer are us old veterans in the shadows under the radar so to speak.

Add to this times are different these days. People seem to be more intolerant, knit picky, any little thing bothers some. All it takes is one of these persons to file a complaint about people digging in their precious park and before you know it a NO METAL DETECTING sign is posted.

The least those shows could do is show junk being dug not only 'nectar' or 'roundness in the hole' but more importantly, show the plug being put back properly.
They don't do those things because it would be boring, take time away from the 'nectar' :heh: jeopardizing ratings.
If they portrayed the realism of detecting, those shows would cease to exist and detector companies wouldn't sell more detectors.

There's a saying for the average soldier during war: Its 99% boredom and 1% terror.

Similarly for most detectorists on an avarage hunt: Its 99% disappointment and 1% excitement
Not good for TV ratings!

back then there were 5 or 10 people hunting every where I went. I rarely see any one any more. I know there are still several that hunt but I never see more than 1 and that's not every time I go.

When i first started detecting in the '70s, i honestly can't remember anyone else in the parks detecting.
Now a days, its common to see other detectorists out there in the parks.....hopefully filling their holes.

The only hope is that those Diggers inspired newbie hole non-filler's and shabby plug replacer's find one pulll tab after another with no nectar:heh:, give up the hobby and put their detector on fleabay. But the damage might already have been done.

I started in 1971 and any time I went hunting or pasted one of the parks there was always several people hunting there. I'm retired and hunt just about every day and rarely see any one else hunting.
