I am only going to buy one extra coil, what should it be?

I have the X-Terra 70 with the 7.5khz 9" coil and I need an upgrade. I want to hit on gold jewelry better and I want better target separation as well. I am thinking about the 10.5" DD coil or the 5x10 DD both in high frequency. Which coil would you recommend?

Well the 5 x 10 will get a little better seperation. If you want really good seperation the 6 inch dd is the coil to get.

I feel like the 6 inch would be too small for the large areas I hunt. The parks I hunt at are quite big and it would take way too long. Do you recommend the 5x10 or the 10"?

I vote for the 5x10
...it rocks !

I use both the 5"x10" 18.75 and the 6" 18.75. I really like the 5x10 but you'll get better separation with the 6" and a little more depth. It's a hot little coil - especially if you hunt around school playground equipment, or an area with lots of trash - it's great. Just my 2 c worth.

I love the stock 9' concentric MF more then most.
It is so versatile (and waterproof too) I use it just about everywhere.

Remember the 10x5 is not waterproof.
I did get a 6" HF (waterproof) coil and have it on my XT-70 when my XT-705 with the stock coil gets into a tight spot.
Or you could just change it out, takes 2 minutes.

I think my next coil will be the 9" 3kHz concentric (also waterproof) to go deeper on coins.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the 10x5, I just find myself around water a lot.
If I had to choose between the 10x5 (only water resistant) and the 10.5 HF round I would pick the 10.5 for better depth.

I have the DD 10.5 MF and love it. Great target separation and great depth. Only thing i don't like about it is that is only water resistant and not water proof.

I had the 6" HF coil and I hated it so much I returned it. Way to small for my patience level.

I just ordered the 9" concentric HF to use on the shore as it is one of the few that are waterproof. Just my 2 cents.

If any coil should be waterproof it should be the 10.5 DD'S!!! :ranting:

Please let me (us) know how you like the 9" HF concentric when you use it a while.

Thanks

Will do....

After using the stock coil (9" MF) and the 6" DD HF, for almost a year, I decided to purchase the 10.5 DD MF, and have been using it for about a month now. I have gone over the same parks that I hunted with the previous coils and have had some great finds, IH's, Wheats and a few silvers. It goes deeper than the others, pinpoints well and the extra weight has not been a problem.

In my Pa. soil, the 10.5" DD HF coil goes deeper and ID's better than the 10x5 coil. It's also heavier and makes the detector nose heavy. The 10x5 coil is lighter and makes the detector feel more balanced. In comparison in my test garden, the 10.5" targets and ID's a clad dime at 9" that the 5x10 won't see and the 10.5" easily sees and ID's a clad dime at 7" whereas the 10x5 sees it but doesn't give an accurate TID. JMHO.

Considering that you may be hunting, for gold jewelry, in trash laden parks, you may wish to consider the 6"DD 18.75kHz Round Coil, as it will give you the ability to detect the 'Good Stuff' without picking up the 'Junk'. Minelab Knowledge Base - FAQ Your Coil Questions Answered

The bigger DD will lose some sensitivity to smaller objects. Probably not a huge deal, you will miss an ear ring or two. The 5x10 gets better separation than the 10 MF DD I have but the 5x10 likes iron a little bit more. I have made good finds with all of my coils. Except for the stocker MF it has gotten one or two wheats, but I do not prefer it.

You can't get just one. You will likely get two. Just ask.

Hi TURNMASTER,

Do you ground balance at low numbers, like 28 or less in your soil?
I have very good results with the 9" MF stock coil.
But my GB #'s are in the 40's for my mild soil.

I wonder if that could be the reason for our different results with the stock coil.

My automatic ground balance numbers are almost all below 28 which is why I need a different coil other than the stock 9" 7.5 coil. I think I have settled on the 5x10 DD HF coil and will be getting it as soon as I can.

The one other thing that most of those posting to this issue are NOT telling you that the 5"x10"DD 18.75kHz coil is NOT waterproof. So if there's any chance you could be hunting at the water's edge, it would NOT be the ideal coil to use. When I owned my X-70, I purchased the 5"x10" coil and wish the 6"DD Round 18.75kHz coil would have been available but it wasn't. Here's two problems with the 5"x10"DD 18.75kHz coil:

1. As stated above, it is NOT waterproof and
2. The bottom cover kept on falling off, which has been a problem for many out there that have purchased the same coil.
3. It does NOT separate targets as well as the 6"DD Round 18.75kHz coil, which IS Waterproof by the way.

Do yourself a favor and buy the 6" round coil. You'll be so much better off.
