Hurricanes and what to do.......metal detecting

In case you are planning on going to the Outer Banks to metal detect after hurricane Irene passes......some advice.

There will be some damage and so the area will be cut off by officials for only property owners for about a week or two depending on how bad the storm is. So don't plan on going there right after the storm. There will be problems with power and surely the motels and hotels will be booked by residents who have property damage. The last thing these people need is to have a bunch of people there when they are trying to clean up.

In case you don't know, there are a lot of homes built on the beach. I doubt that many of them will survive a cat 4 as they are built on stilts. In recent times, so many homes have been built on the beaches and a hurricane has not hit there in many years. So you can bet that there will be a lot of trash on the beach....nails...wood.....junk of all types. The area has not seen a big storm in quite a while so the folks there will be in for a surprise. Hopefully there will be no fatalities or injuries.

So folks...stay out of the area for a while as they will need to do what they need to do after the storm. Give it a few weeks.

That is great advice...Thank You. All of us who don't live on or near those hard hit areas need to be considerate and mindful of the local folks who may suffer great property loss..

"So don't plan on going there right after the storm" & "Give it a few weeks"

Why can't persons just go metal detect where there's no immediate adjacent beach-side home damage (where, you surmise, there might be officials shooing people away)? Because if md'rs "wait a few weeks" as you suggest, the beach sand might be filling back in, by that time. Sometimes the BEST time to hunt, is right after the sand has eroded out (or even in-process, while surf/swells are still strong, and the sand is still suspended off-shore).

Certainly the entire coast can't be "off limits". Just go north or south of any closed trailheads or parking lots, and there's multiple other beach access points, .... no?

sure there will be damage ..couse most people bild their houses are bild out of few 2x4's and half inch sheetrock

The officials will have all the roads blocked if there is significant damage. I had a home close to the landfall of Hurricane Andrew back in 1992 and even though I had minor damage, they would not allow me to go near it till I could prove I was a property owner in the area. The national guard had the roads blocked and only residents were allowed in. They looked at my drivers license and said I was from Ohio so I was not allowed to pass through the roadblocks. I had to get my title to show them that I was an owner of a home in the area.

You can try going there.....but it may be a wasted trip because you may not be allowed near the area for a while.

Finder is right.....If you ain't got urgent business there you ain't getting in!!!!!........Depending on storm surge all roads will have from 1 to 4 foot of sand covering everything. During Isabel hwy 12 was not passable for a couple of weeks. During Ike, Bolivar pen. had 4 to 6 foot of sand covering everything for about 1 mile inland. ATV's are about the only thing that will go after the storm. Emergencies are handled by ATV and helicopter. I do insurance work and have been for 20+ years and have seen the damage right after these storms.

NOT A GOOD TIME TO GO METAL DETECTING.....

A most sensible post postbnthere................ If it were your home, think about the priorities. Detecting just doesn't fit the bill in a disaster.

well vacation has been planned for several months now, were headed to myrtle beach on sat early,if possible im going to hit the beaches to find any cuts or erosion...been waiting for a storm to come by so i could hunt in Florida after a storm, but now it ll be in myrtle beach...so yes safety first, I'm watching web cams and local news now....
ill stay posted updates..
have fun
john

You should be there now. They probably wont let you in Saturday. For a good beach/hurricane hunt you need to be there during the storm and hit the beach ASAP after it passes. When it passes the rotation will pull the beach away but the next tide will start bringing sand back. There is some inherent danger involved in hurricane beach hunting... but it you want a shot at the buried treasure you have to get out there as soon as you can after the west wind becomes tolerable.... you don't want to get blown out to sea. Don't wear some raingear that will turn into a sail, maybe a wetsuit? You might want to tether your detector to yourself.

Otherwise, get there when they let you and have fun. If I were going, I would be there now.... but I would also be going to Florida's treasure coast. You might find some CW relics at Myrtle Beach. Irene could easily wash some buttons and some weirdness up onto the beach... if you can get in there next week.

I realize that this is not the safe way to do things and could be deadly if you get out there too soon or try to weather the upper side of the storm in a stilt house or on the first floor of some motel... but hey as they say in the SAS 'Who Dares Wins' !!

Man.. John, if I were you I would really try to find a way to get there a day early. I hope you make the find of a lifetime but be careful if you go in the water so you don't get pulled out. I bet there will be some bad riptides.
Find something good... you timed this trip just right. I bet you are excited!

The government is kicking out all tourists on the Outer Banks and I hear that there will be mandatory evacuation of the whole Outer Banks very soon. I was planning a trip to OBX for this coming week before the hurricane was even starting. I called the hotel and they told me to stay away.

If the storm is a bad one, then there will be a lot of damage and trash everywhere. It would not be a very nice place to be. No electricity to pump gasoline. No ability to sell anything as the power will be out and there will be no computers to be able to ring you up. Hopefully the storm will be not as bad as it is being predicted for the sake of the people who live there.

Yes...being on the beach right after the storm would be ideal.....but getting in the way of safety forces is not a good idea. They do not want you there while the area is being cleaned up. The sand will be washed pretty much away and yeah the sand will come back, but it will not be as deep as it was before even a week after the storm. There will be plenty of finds after this storm for quite a while afterwards.

OK WET SUIT YES I HAVE, SAFETY IS ALWAYS FIRST, WE SHOULD BE THERE LATE SAT AFTERNOON, IF ABLE TO GET INTO OUR CONDO, THEN IF ABLE, ILL CHECK OUT THE BEACH,oops sorry about caps, I'm thinking ill not go into water, just waters edge and any erosion spots i may find??? I'm sure i can still hunt a beach after living in Florida for the past 14 years, vacation has been all planned for 6 mos now, this is the added bonus for ME..:detecting::clapping:
ill post more while down there
thanks
john

That's good thinking John, stay on dry land. No need to risk it getting in even shallow water. I'll be going out to our beaches here in lower Delaware as soon as it lets up. Hopefully we all survive it with little damage, i'm about 4 miles inland. We're praying that everyone in harms way makes out ok, survival first, detecting is secondary. Good luck everybody, Joe.

Sure wish I could make it to the coast after this one.I have a sister in NC I could stay with, but its just not in the cards this year.Good luck to all you guys swinging after the storm and may God's Hand be with you crazy hardcores that will be out there in it.(You know who you are :detecting:)

Myrtle beach is too far south of the main area that is going to get a direct hit so Myrtle Beach should be safe but.......don't go in the water.......UNDERTOW!

A few years ago I had a friend who just got married and he and his new wife went to Myrtle Beach for their honeymoon. They went swimming and she got caught in an undertow. He went out to save her and so did several others. As it turned out, he drowned and she was saved. It was in only chest deep water that she was started to be pulled out.

Being in the water when conditions are as they are while storms are around can make for some very bad experiences.

nah no getting in the water for me till surf calms down, just on-land for me or wet sand, all packed up,loading car in a bit, wake up at 4:00 am leave by 5:00 should be there around 4:00 and hopefully if conditions will allow ill be on the beach around 6:00pm sat eve..I'm hoping hunting will be great??ill be looking for the cuts..anyone care to join me just pm and well hook up..
ill post more while I'm there on a new thread..
