Hunting Sports Fields OK?

I won't detect inside a ball field or soccer field unless it is an obvious, run-down, not well maintained on a schedule. I am pretty sure an answer to my question is, "If it looks high class, stay on the sidelines and don't hunt the actual field." There are always variations of what pristine is though, so am I losing out on lots of hunt spots by basically never hunting the actual ball fields? I read a post now and then with bragging about tons of coins being found in these soccer fields.

What is the general rule of thumb? tia

I'm not a clad hunter per sai, so typically pick the older schools, parks/fields, but if strictly jewelry hunting I will venture onto newer spots and I do hunt the fields. I do, though, with all such spots pick times when few if any people are around and am extra careful to make my plugs/holes neat. Be neat and keep a low profile and most fields are fair game. I will tell you a true story from last year about a Soccer Field near me.
The Complex has a large building with indoor soccer fields and an outdoor field.
The place is always packed when I drive by and this temped me a lot.
Finally last fall I gathered up enough courage to set up a hunt real early on a Saturday Morning as the sun was coming up.
I would be the only one out there.

I parked my car and prepared my gear and bravely walk out on the field.
Boy was the grass really green this late in the year.
Too my surprise the field was Astro Turf!

City Parks and Rec and School District grounds maintenance folks are pretty easy to ask questions. Like it was mentioned, if it looks well maintained I would stay off the grass in either venue. Usually you can get your foot in the door if you ask about the sidelines, food booths, general approach routes etc for availability.

In my area usually the fields owned by the local municipality are accessible for the most part..School fields not so much as many are fenced in and have signage prohibiting unofficial use.. low profile off hours best to not draw attention..

I usually hit the better maintained fields late in the year or through the winter when no activity is taking place there.
This also gives the grass time to recover before spring.
Two ball fields I hesitated to go to some yesterday ago looked appealing for finds, and finally over Christmas break from work and after some rain I decided to try them.
Glad I did too.
I found 32 quarters there the first time and went back the next day and found 22 more.
These were just clad quarters, but most were deep in the soft soil.
Sometimes timing can dictate whether to try these paces or not just like anywhere else in my opinion…
