Hunting in all metal mode

That's exactly what I am all the time running into here. Most of the sites that I havebeen trying to hunt are littered with iron, causing my GT to constantly null. Seems the only way to get the threshold to return is to stop swinging the coil. Doesn't really matter how slow the swing is eather, It will still null. I'm still finding good stuff but I know there has to be alot more down there that i'm missing.

That's the way it works in the iron. Go as slow as you can, with the smallest( or at least the one with the narrowest search window) that you have .Cut the sensitivity down to where you have threshold most( at least half) the time.( in disc mode)
Some of these spots should hold good stuff. It's the trash that makes it hard.
Also, dig anything that does not sound like iron. Iron can cause good targets to average down and sound like trash.
Pinpointing gets messed up in the iron. Iron is highly permeable and conducts magnetic flux easily. This distorts the coil's magnetic field and causes targets to appear off center from where they really are. You could dig a hole and miss the desired target by inches.
All metal search (not pinpoint ) may find a few for you. Like running an Exp wide open.

Thanks Art.....I will put your suggestions to use next time out.

quite often arround iron i have picked up good stuff, not by the side to side "wiggle" but by rocking the wrist which gives a very slight rotation of the coil (maybe 5

I have heard of tilting the coil on purpose to see if you can get a look at something under the trash.
Try everything you can think of. Nothing works all the time, but once in a while is better than nothing.

Okay, now we are getting somewhere!!

"Also, dig anything that does not sound like iron."

What does iron sound like? I thought the iron was the null.

Perhaps I should have said......does not sound or feel like iron.
Iron that souns off instead of nulling tends to be unstable in tone and position in the ground. It often teases up in ID even though the hit is fairly strong. It usually is hard to pinpoint as if it keeps moving around. Pinpoints in a different location between disc and am.

When you start digging the hole for the target (iron) will keep moving.
After you dig enough iron you will start to know pretty fast if it sounds and feels like iron or not.
Go to a iron trash area and feel out EVERY positive hit. And listen closely to the audio while watching the coil movement.

Long pieces of iron(nails, bolts, rod) tend to ping on the ends. They tend to null when in line with the coil spoke.

Dig enough(provided you pay attention) and you will start to spot the subtle differences.
Iron, as well as anything else can mask or average readings of a good target. This can cause a wrong tone and meter reading. Do not assume that something has to be trash when you get a low, poor sounding hit in heavy trash. Listen first then dig.....until you get the feel for it.

There can be a lot of good finds left at old sites because most detectorists only dig "good ID's".
Besides, every piece of iron you remove makes it easier to find the good stuff.

AND....if you pull a piece of iron out of the hole, check it again. Keep digging until the hole goes dead.....no target of any kind.

I got to spend about three hours at the Mission/Victorian era site I previously posted about on this thread, and spent about two of the three hours cleaning iron out with my Coinstrike. I've never dug so many square nails and other junk before, but I made a dent.

After removing all the square nails I could find, I spent about an hour going over a 10' x 10' area very slowly with my Sovereign and this is what I came up with:

The lid ended up being silver, I cleaned it up a bit more and it's marked "39 STERLING ALVIN". It appears to be a silver lid from a ladies glass boudoir set:

Now I have a bit more encouragement to go back after finding the sterling lid :detecting:

The spoon really has me puzzled. At first I thought the spoon might copper, but under the patina it appears to be GOLD. I'm tempted to hit the spoon with some electrolysis to see what it's really made of....imagine if it is a gold spoon.

Odd, not sure what to make of that. I'm thinking the spoon might be a colonial era piece ?? Anyone have any ideas ??

Had you wizzed over the ground you may not have found them, with that sort of stuff found there must be more, attack the iron on all sides, as it comes off the target and you get a cut ping you might get a surprize, if it nulls, stop till the threshold comes back then twitch the coil very slightly, if there is anything there the sovereign will home in and let you know, patience pays off.
Good luck with your spot

keep at it , sites like that are so damn frustrating, BUT one killer coin or jewelery find will make you instantly forget all the Crap you went through to get it.......
Hats off to you for being patient and sticking it out ...
