Hunting etiquette- Seeking your input

This is a very good topic. I guess I feel differently than most here. If it's on the beach, it doesn't bother me in the least for someone to come where I am hunting and I've honestly never given it a thought about me walking onto the beach and starting to hunt where others are. I guess I feel it is PUBLIC beach and it is free for all. Maybe my views reflect the fact though that I don't take it very seriously. It's just a very fun hobby to me. I've met a lot of nice people detecting who would stop and chat. Then I've met several that were not very nice or friendly (seems to me like most of them are carrying minelabs ). The last time I was at the beach at Folly, there were usually 6 - 8 detectorist in any given part of the beach so you really wouldn't have gotten to hunt if you were afraid of getting on someone's turf.

Hey dirtdigginlady. I live only a few minutes from Folly so I hunt there often. I use three detectors and two of them are Minelabs but I don't think that has anything to do with whether people are friendly or not. I have met one or two women detecting over time, don't know if maybe you were one of them or not, I'm getting older and very bad with remembering names. When I see other people detecting down there I like to speak if we come close enough to each other but only for a second or two as time and tide wait on nobody. I don't want to take up much of their time or lose much of mine. I always hunt alone so often I won't see people up close. Another thing I like to do is hunt other stretches of the beach, away from the pier area and the County Park. Those areas are fun to hunt when conditions are right but that is where people with detectors like to concentrate. Remember that the entire coastline has nice waterfront beach houses and most of these are rentals. My best finds have come from areas where I never see anyone else hunting. It's true that you might go for stretches without finding much and probably fewer coins than you will around the pier or park but the potential for some really nice jewelry finds is there when conditions are right. I'll keep an eye out for you and promise to be friendly, Minelab or not. --Jerry

I see your point in the part about one person coming down one way and another from the other direction
but if i read the post right he was working an area away from the others and finding targets at a good clip and then the other people detecting saw this and headed his way there by cutting into the area he was detecting i detect with friends and we do pass each other as we detect and sometime even switch areas with each other as we use different machines so what i might miss with my detector one of my Buddy's might find with his, also you guys/gals are working trying to outrun the tide and get as much as you can in the short amount of time you have that day as the sands shift and rebuild the beach,i hunt lakes and rivers here so it will be there again in the morning as the sand shifts a lot slower unless there's a storm or ice moving the sand, but if you were working a patch of ground would you like to have others come over and start hunting in front of you to cut you off??? I'm sure the answer would be NO....
and what if it messed up your detector and you missed a nice ring or chain because you couldn't hear
your detector??? and just so you know if I'm finding targets and my friends aren't i will let them know i am so thy can get in on it too as it might be a hot area in the lake that hasn't been hit by others(we have found up to 12 gold rings along with old silver rings and coins this way) so we all end up with something
sharing the loot is good just don't cut someone off trying to get what thy have found

The beach is HUGE. If there is a hot spot, grid that area and don't move from it. Most detectorists will respect at least a 10-15 foot radius.

I feel it is much more important to fill your holes and pick up any trash you dig up. I was hunting a beach last weekend and there was another person detecting about 100 yards up the beach. He was continuing to head South as I was moving South, so we were never going to meet. Needless to say, when I started to get near where he was hunting, there were holes all over, and there were pull tabs, bottle caps, nails, washers, etc. right next to his holes. He was digging junk and just leaving it on the surface. And you could tell these were not targets that were on the surface from the get go. This beach was sanded in a bit, so there wasn't much if any surface trash to begin with.

That pissed the hell out of me, and I got tired of picking up his crap so I turned around and headed back North.

I was almost ready to post a very detailed message on the forums, stating what beach I was on, exactly where and wanted him to know he is not welcome on this beach if he continues to detect this way.

Pick up your garbage as well as your treasure.

Thanks Deerman. It was not a usual pattern of crossing one another. It was more like I was a magnet and they were iron. I will post my observations in the future.

This is a little off topic but have you ever noticed that many casual strollers on the beach will home in on you like a magnet. There could be a thousand yards of shoreline to walk on with nobody around and somehow people always manage to get in your way. Just lettin' off a little steam.

Then theres the guy 20 feet away yelling "you finding anything" and really I can't understand what he's saying cause I've got my headphones on.I just keep swinging and walkin. That really bugs me.

I might get a peak at what the guy is swinging. You see some custom jobs out there that really are great ideas. But to interrupt that persons hunting or squat on their section is wrong.

i guess it all boils down to common sense and good manners? as far as i am concerned,...........
1. if you see me hunting and would like to come over and say hi by all means do so!! if i am short on time and don't want to talk i will politely tell you.
2. if we are on a "collision course" i will probably ask you how your doing and then go around you.
3. i will never run over to where your at and start detecting!
4. i always keep the trash i dig!
5. i always fill my holes in!
6. i don't crowd the beach-goers since i wouldn't want them to complain and end up getting us hunters banned from the beach!
maybe some of you pros could come up with a beach-hunters code????
great/important topic, thanks for starting it! cant wait to move to Florida in may!!!!
chuck.

A few years ago somebody posted a list of do's and dont's, might have been one of the Va. Beach Pirates, though I can't remember for certain. It pretty much covered acceptable 'Pirate Etiquette', assuming that isn't an oxymoron. Does anybody remember that post from way back when?

Cheers,

I'm late reading this post but the subject is timely and etiquette is always important. Most of the people I meet in Rockaway are OK but every once in a while, usually after a storm, if you know what I mean, we get this bunch of stupid as****es from another borough across the bay . You never see them working the beach during the lean times, but give us a storm with possibilities of some good, easy finds and they are on the beach like flies on s**t. They never read the beach on their own but go right to where the locals are working and move in. What's sad is they mostly don't even know how to use their machines. One time one of them walked a line for a whole block in about 5 min and found a soda can. A little later I went back over the same area slowly and methodically and did a few bucks clad and a silver ring. They are not a threat. They are just posers and a nuisance. They also leave the beach a mess. If any of them have the brains to find this forum, my message to you is; stay home. You're not welcome in Rockaway. I think that the MD manufacturers should include a book on manners along with the detector manual. There, I've vented. Happy Hunting guys. Be nice.

Hi another piece of advice i can give is NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER say that you think a guy is going too fast as i did after watching a guys vid he posted as all i copped was a smart a-s answer then it was hinted i did not know what i was talking about, although i have been detecting for about 16 years and found heaps of good items and have detected in 5 different countries ,i do know when a guy is going too fast ,in all my time detecting and having watched many hundreds of people doing it i can say i have only seen one guy going at the best speed ,this guy even found stuff that i had missed [ i then knew that i was guilty of kinda racing ] i wont sign this as i dont like the smart answers.bye

Hi Folks; Was OOC for a few days.My back is out. Waiting for surgery.Anyway On this one I purposefully but tactfully engage them in talk to find out their intents.I usualy find them to be friendly even though there is always a few jerks.I believe in being a gentlman but even if they are jerks I "try" to reason with them.If they insist or become beligerent I absolutely will treat them in accordance with their actions or attitudes.I'll be damned if I will be treated with disrespect by some idiot.I served my dues and still do.Veteran, family, kid,etc..I believe in treating people with respect and although I will forgive some transgressions I will NOT allow anyone to chase me out of my area or threaten me at all.Simple suggestion: talk to them.Be polite in all areas.Even exchange ideas and input but for no reason shoould you ever allow someone to bully you or chase you away from your area or present activities. if they did it to you they "WILL" do it to others as well. After a while someone has to stand up to them otherwise they will try to chase everyone away in the same manner. If you are afraid for your safety then leave the area and "please" call the closest cop.No coin or ring is worth your safety.REMEMBER: Be nice.Be polite.Have fun.But be firm. It is called being a MAN.!! With that said May God BlessAll of you and yours. PEACE:RONB :usaflag: :detecting:

Remember: Besde every good man lies a good right hook.!!!! Just kidding.!!
