Howdy from Montana

Hello everyone!

I'm glad to be aboard such a friendly forum.

I've been doing considerable research on various brands and types of metal detectors. I have an older (10 years old) Fisher Gold Bug and my very first metal detector was a 1970's Garrett BFO type. So you now know I'm prolly an older retired gentleman! 72 actually!

Anyway, I like what "I think" I know about the MXT.

The MXT I'm considering comes equiped with a 9" Eclipse coil. Should I also consider the purchase the smaller 5.3" Eclipse coil for nugget shooting?

Montana is infamous for long winters, hot rocks, bullets, spent shells, trash, pull tabs, and mineralization. I'm hoping the MXT will be a better all-round detector than the Goldbug, plus be easier to operate in trashy areas when nugget hunting. Any comment on these assumptions?

Winter will eventually end, even in this part of the world, and I have some places I want to explore with a hot new up-to-date detector when spring finaly arrives!

Your valuable opinions and/or advice will certainly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but I have no knowledge of the MXT being used for gold hunting, but there are a few folks on this Forum that does use it for that purpose...have patience and someone will be along to answer your questions. Again, welcome to the Forum and enjoy yourself. Kelley (Texas) :)

I've never used the Goldbug and haven't done any prospecting with my MXT but I will throw out a couple of things. Yes you will want a smaller coil, especially for trashy areas. The 5.3 is very good and the 4X6 shooter is near surgical and can be worked in very tight places. Many (myself included) really like the 6X10 DD coil for most of our hunting. It handles trashy areas pretty well and gives good depth. Arguably, the most all round useful coil for the MXT.
In general you'll find the MXT to be easy to learn and use. It has good depth and between the built in modes and the available coil selection it is one of the most versatile machines on the market today. I''ve found lots of coins and assorted goodies with mine and am really glad it's in my stable of detectors.

I haven't used it for gold nugget hunting either but I have been
to other forums and know the MXT works quite well up in Alaska,
Arizona and WAAAAYYYYYYYyyyyyyy down under in Australia.
If you buy the MXT your getting a good machine.

Thanks for your reply.

I had debated with myself about the 6 X 10 DD coil and I'm glad you brott it up. Initially it was my first pick for an additional coil before thinking the 5.3 might be the best bet. Now, based on your comment the 6 X 10 works well in trashy areas and gives good depth I will again reconsider and most likely opt for it instead of the 5.3.

Of course, once I recover from the initial $ outlay, I can pick up a 5.3 or 4 X 6 coil if I feel a need to do so.

Thanks again, I do appreciate your valued advice.

BarberBill,

Well, you and Katz can prolly tell I'm new to responding to messages on the Forum. My reply to Katz should have been directed to you...I'm so sorry! Needless to say I am embarrassed!

Katz, I do thank you for your reply also as it is of value to know this detector is being used successfully in Alaska and down under in Austrailia. I'd love to visit either place and do some prospecting.

Thanks again to both you guys!

The 5.3 coil is for coin and jewelry hunting in trashy parks etc and delivers good depth, almost as deep as the 9.5.
The 4x6 dd and the 6x10 dd is for prospecting in heavy mineralization where the dd coil is a prerequisite, the do work well for coin and beach hunting as well.

The 5.3 has a little trouble in the heavy mineralization, where gold is usually found but make a better coin shooters coil. Choose the dd coils for prospecting if I were you.

PennyFinder

Pennyfinder,

Thanks for the additional confirmation the 4 X 6 and 6 X 10 dd coils are the right choice for my primary purpose of prospecting. I certainly respect your opinion.

Even tho I'm retired, one doesn't always have time to head for the mountians and gulches to prospect. For that reason I wanted a detector I can also use for coin and jewelry hunting when I have a couple hours to kill. Unless I learn something to the contrary, the MXT seems to be a good pick for what I want to do.

Thank you for taking time to reply... it confirms the opinion I formed about the people here before joining this forum...you guys are a friendly and helpful bunch.

Kelley,

Thanks for your welcome and you were right...I've already had several valuable posts to the questions I asked!

Welcome to the forum, there are a few Montana folks on here, where are you at? ( I tried sending you a personal message, but you have to be a member for a little while for this option). The MXT is a good machine for coin, jewelry, relic, and prospecting. I have 4 friends that have MXT's and I have the M6 (same basic guts) and we are all pleased with the machine. There are a bunch of great folks on here with great advice, I'm sure you will find it very helpful.
HH and pray for spring!

Jon,
I sure appreciate your input. I've lived in Great Falls since 197l. I'm originally from NW Nebraska where the winters are even more nasty than Montana. But, I agree...pray for spring! Beside wanting to get out into the boonies for some prospecting, I have a Bergman 400cc Scooter in the garage that I'm anxious to fire up and just ride somewhere....anywhere! LOL

Thanks for your reply neighbor.

Howdy Bucko,
Im new here too, just purchased an MXT myself a few weeks ago.
Talkin to locals around here , and at kellyco, and in my research I/we decided to go with the 4x6 DD.
As you said , the ground in Montana is highly mineralized, and lots of trash.
My decision was based on the fact , that we do a lot of sluicin and pannin for Gold,so the mxt will certainly get some use
in that area.
I'm thinkin , somewhere between 10 and 30 percent of its use will be Prospecting.
Ive got a friend with a Minelab exterra, so we're gonna do some testing to help get me in tune with our MXT.
Good Luck to ya , in whatever you choose,
Keep in touch, and maybe if youre ever down around Helena or Butte, we can search some ground.
Dusty
P.S. DANG SNOW!!!!!

Welcome to the forum !! :whites:

Dusty,

You can bet I will take your advice to heart. Guess we are all ready to see some bare ground. Been a long winter.

Good luck with your MXT! I'll be very interested to learn how the 4 X 6 works out. I need to make a decision between it and the 5.5 X 10 and at the moment I'm leaning toward the 5.5 X 10. But, I am a Libra so I need to weigh everything a dozen times. Still, one is never locked in forever.... when finances allow I can purchase another coil if whatever I choose initially doesn't work out.

Let's stay in touch. I have a high banker sluice I haven't used for several years and would like to put it to work again. If I can get it running that is...The exercise would prolly do me some good too! LOL

Joel...

thankee for the welcome from someone who lives further north of the equator than I do!

When I complain about our weather here I should consider there is another entire country on the map above Montana...and you are located in lake country which, if it is anything like Minn, gets really brutal. Would love to visit sometime...in the SUMMER!

Bucko

Our season' s are usually from April to October with temp as high in the mid 30's in the summer.
Lots of lakes usually free of ice mid May and good breading grounds for mosquitoes.
Flat lander country with big sky country like Montana.
I do mostly coin and jewelry hunting both on land and in the water.
Not much for relic hunting as this part of the country was only settled in the late 1800's

Hi and welcome to the forum. This is a great place with a lot of information on the MXT and we have a lot of wonderful people that are here and willing to lend a helping hand. Glad to see you here. HH, Nancy

Thanks Nancy

I do feel welcome here...but, it's snowing agin this morning so there is no hope I'll be able to contribute much for a while! LOL. I'll keep listening tho.

I do have another question...has anyone read "The MXT Edge" by Jeff Foster. I see it on Amazon for $25. Does Anyone here recommend it?

Bucko

Bucko, We're getting snow here also. I am so sick of this snow. I keep telling myself, "I need to get out of here" Spring can't come fast enough!

The book is highly recommended by many on the MXT forum and Larry (my hubby) sells them for the same price and free shipping for Findmall members. I'm fortunate enough to have one signed by Jeff Foster himself. Ooh la la

Stay warm,
Nancy
