How to defend yourself

Another thing to consider……
Most stop and robs are crimes of opportunity. We have detector in hand and all anyone has to do is watch a YT video of some guy finding gold and silver and expensive jewelry. Some young punk thinks easy score so either individually or in concert with others decide to try and get lucky. Detector is kinda like a neon sign saying “I find neat stuff”……
I now carry a “throw down” pouch with a couple costume rings and zero value coins. If I have to hand over then let them have the crap and they think they scored. I carry a second pouch hidden thats not so readily known. I had a friend who used an old cotton apron style nail vest. He cut a slot in one of the pouches and could slip his better finds into his front pocket and no one was the wiser, looked for everything like he was putting stuff in the pouch.

I started this post just to make people think a bit about whats around them and “what would I do if….” Not to scare, not to worry, just think.

Obviously there are a million scenarios/situations and there are just as many responses that can turn out good or bad. It's best to think about it and try to be prepared as I've told my kids but sh!t happens.. Whether detecting or going into the grocery store anyone anywhere are at risk of something. Carrying a weapon does bring us security as well as responsibility and liabilities. Also needed is insurance to cover legal fees. I've came to the conclusion that carrying a can of mace, maybe even bear spray size, is the best option. You have to love and hate lawyers. My granddaughters are at the age they're getting mace as part of their Xmas presents this year. That's the real world we live in. Libs need to shut-up and learn this. Crazy how many movies have shown examples of this, especially since they're made in Hollywood, but the idiots still believe you don't need a self defense weapon or to fund police.

It is best to stay away from hunters during open season.


I do not do that at all.


Never had a bunch of hill country folk ever approach me anywhere in the great outdoor fields and woods.


Never saw a cop or detective while out in the wilderness either.



Not sure where you are detecting but maybe you should find more safer places.

Got turned around once, approached some hunters for directions, no problems. In parks it is the meth heads you have to keep an eye on.

I've been using the Legend, my good finds are hidden in a small tray in the handle.

Detector has serial number…… hard to ID coins individually specific and same with jewelry unless engraved.

I never had issues while detecting, only time I ever carried a firearm was when I was relic hunting, I had my bond arms 357 Derringer with shot shells , but I always have carry my 40 in my service van everywhere I go .

We use this at work for inner city dog's.
Pitbulls,rotweillers, mastiffs. You name it.
No dog has gotten thru it. A near Miss we've had a few come back. Then a nice full face spray.
Their done. I don't leave home without it.
Wicked stuff. Buy the sudacon wipes.
Sometimes your downwind of the attacker.
And you get just enough to be very uncomfortable.
Not like your attackers. Who can't see and having real trouble breathing.
One of our girls got a big back blast. Didn't flush her eyes well enough. Was in the hospital next day with her eyes infected. As I said very nasty stuff.

Buy a few extra and teach the girls how to use it.
Has a safety latch over the trigger on pocket size can that in a panic a person can press not realizing it. Slide thumb under the safety latch. Spray button below it. And give em a few wipes just in case.
Also teach them to have it in hand in dark places or where they get that gut feeling.

I was robbed once. Didn't even know it until later.
I was detecting a favorite small beach. Got dark on me about 11pm. Never had an issue there. Detected thru the night many times even.
As I called it a night. Off in the distance I saw a tall guy walking my way. Only a couple lights in the parking lot. As he got up to me I put my machine and gear in the driver's side rear door. Started asking the usual curious questions.
Went to the passenger side to change out of my wader's. As he talked and I was distracted apparently his partner opened the drivers side rear door.
When he closed it I heard the click. I turned to see another tall guy walking away with something in front of him.
I hollered out to him and he just kept walking.
I looked back at the other guy only to find he vanished into the dark. Most likely the beach.
I carry a couple machines and coils where ever I hunt. Took a look but didn't notice anything missing.
Later at home as I was unloading I found my 5" round excellerator coil with carbon fiber shaft for my Explorer 2 was gone. Welp there goes a couple hundred bucks. I still can't find that coil. Darn
Yup much more aware these days. Even on a small town local beach I know very well.
They were good and quick.

I've been using the flip top Sabre brand and my daughter has too. The DPS looks good, I may get it next time. I'm planning on getting these for the girls. They're small enough they hopefully will carry them and big enough to be effective. Not as fast as the flip top that I to prefer but less likely to accidentally spray it. They won't want anything to do with it they accidentally spray themselves.

I don't leave holes or trash. I've gotten real good at digging/cutting plugs.

Everyone I've dealt with has been either friendly or indifferent, but that could be due to a visible Glock or 1911, and not entirely my attitude/demeanor..

If your not breaking the law, tell anyone who has a problem to kick rocks and fuck themselves.

Avoid altercations, but if you are legal beagle and minding your P's and Q's, don't take any shit from people.

The only places I've nearly quit entirely on, are "urban" areas.... ripe with "youths"; and that's mainly due to physical munition restrictions and the fact that the law and a potential jury would not look at the situation with any sort of reality in mind (equity and whatnot)...


If your within the bounds of the law, be respectful and do your thing, but be mindful and smart too!


At times, it's a fine line we must walk.
