How much junk are you willing to dig to find gold ????

Summer beach season finally over and a popular, outdoor dining location finally closed. Was a large fenced in area on the beach. They left the fence open after putting away all the tables
and luckily I was the first to get in. I decided just to just dig all the high tones for coins since the place is loaded with pull tabs and bottle caps. My first hunt yielded 75 qtrs, 35+ dimes, a few nickels
and a $25 casino token !!! Then they closed up the fence and I thought that was it for this year. The other day, Im walking down the beach and hear lots of laughing. I took up and I see a photographer in the fenced area taking wedding pictures. I walk over and the fence is open and here comes round 2. I decided this time, since I had gotten most of the coins, I was going to dig every signal and see if we could find a pieces of gold.

I dug 87+/- pull tabs, a ton of bottle caps and screw tops. Ended up 16 qtrs, 16 dimes and a few nickels. Jewelry.... really good looking fake earring, 2 junk rings and 1 thin silver ring.

If it wasnt sand, Id never do this in dirt digging. Still a ton more signals but they dont wear much gold to the beach. I know this was just the dry sand but you can hardly find any silver nowadays, either.

Each hunt was about 2 1/2 hrs.

Good luck to you dirt diggers looking for gold !!!! Just too much work !!!!

Nice job 👍 but, being I’m getting older and digging in the dirt I’m more of strictly older coin hunter.
Years ago I could dug that many in dirt but, not today. Well, not that I would do it even I could in the dirt. Sand scooping sure.

That's a pretty impressive quarter haul and hopefully that casino is close by! How much time I have and what kind of site am I hunting seem to dictate how much energy I have for chasing the gold. If I lived near a vacation beach, I'd go after every signal. In a ghost town, I tend stick to the target range I know could be a gold coin. In the grass it depends on my mood, some days are cherry picking while others are investigate it all. Gold is so elusive, it would be great if it all sounded like a nickel but you can find it on both ends of the discrimination scale depending on size, shape, karat, conductivity, etc. Sometimes, I think the answer is don't search for the gold targets because if you find any, you will never stop looking for more!:ROFLMAO:

Some days I only dirt fish pull tabs type signals in hopes of a Goldie. I have to say it does get old quick and after Twenty to thirty minutes I switch to high tones - the brain gets overloaded without a cool reward.
On the beach I have scored a gold ring (a long time ago) just digging pull tab signals from a boardwalk repair site but that was exhausting.
I haven’t done that often, I just enjoy detecting whatever signals there are.

Very impressive in deed, apparently you have the patience of Jobe and the stamina of Hercules!!! Both my mens gold band rings this year were in the nickel range. I still have Revier’s post of collegiate size rings in zinc etc etc. As long ad its a solid tone, and not chirpy, I dig. So far a couple of nicer jewelry items but nothing to take my second retirement over. I’m learning old tokens sound off as trash generally and some of those have substantial collector value. Decisions, decisions….

Outstanding haul of clad regardless of no gold. I'm with you on the gold holes digging. I don't do it anymore either! I go after most nickel range readings and cents readings and get blessed with 3-4 gold bands in the nickel reading range and an occasional man's 10k class ring digging all cent readings annually. Some days that's even more digging then I want. Maybe another window will open up for you. You have relieved the spot already of a lot of trash. HH jim tn

I try not to dig too much trash anymore, wears on the knee........pictures is just a small sampling of trash I have dug to find the good stuff. ........It is a lot of work. It does pay off every now and then.
I dig the least amount of trash with a White's IDX with Mr. Bills Mods, the Asian 24k gold ring was found this May with it.
Found at various locations among the trash.
Claddagh ring found with my Pi. Two rings found with T2, Butterfly ring with a Tesoro Silver Sabre Umax. Cross found with AKA Berkut. Heart ring found with a Tesoro Bandido. Asian Ring with the IDX

Like I said, I just wanted to see what all the other non-coin targets were. Since there were 2 tiki bars in the sand, I knew there were going to tons of bottle caps, screw caps and pull tabs.
Just thought I might luck out with apiece of gold.

We all have to pick what works best as we get older.

Ive have found 3 gold coins in my career so far, 2 in England and one here. All 3 were large coiins, guinea, sovereign and $10. 2 came in with high tones and I dont recall the last one. The reason I remember the 2 high tones were because they were deep and I just kept digging know they had to be something good. So dont over look the high tones when digging out in those ghost towns !!!

I remember years ago, someone told me if you are not digging nickels, you're not finding gold. Many years later when I got my first machine with a meter, I notched in nickels. Only found 1 small
name ring. Size, shape and karat have a huge effect on target ID. On the beach Ive found gold rings throughout the entire ID range. Most higher karat 18k and larger rings will ring up in the zinc range. I found this 22k, huge wedding band last winter. Got the shock of my life when I saw what was in the scoop. I really expected a rotten zinc from the target ID.
Gold is sooo tricky !!!

I do not live near any salt water beaches, the nearest fresh water beach is about 4 hours away. when I go there I dig everything and usually find 4 or 5 rings. Parks I try not to waste much time digging trash and depending on the park will pull 1 - 5 bucks in clad in a 2-3 hour period.
Next comes nugget hunting, I dig everything, and find my share + of brass and lead, on a good day I find a small nugget, on a great day I find larger nugget, sometimes a copper nugget which also brings a smile, copper or silver nugget means there is gold nearby. On a normal day out I only get trash. Picture shows a 5gr on the right, 1.75 gr on the left still in the host rock, top and bottom are copper nuggets. So looking for Gold, dig it all.

WoW
Impressive finds.

Some things never change. You just got to dig it all. But when that GOLD appears! Quick, put it in you pocket! Might be a varmint watchin' you.

Location, Location, Location - Mike Hillis has great advice for improving the odds. His advice caused me to rethink my entire approach. I'm glad i did :)
