How many silver coins do you average per year?

Tony N (Michigan) said:
Wish I could say 10 but I am maybe 4 to 5 a year. This past year I got 7 and I think that was pretty good, 3 of those was in one day.

We should start a club called "The Underachievers Silver Club." LOL

I detected the farm next to mine circa 1834. I've found very old coins on that farm. I've hunted it to death. But never have I found one silver coin. I know I'm the only one who ever detected it.
I don't consider a half-dime as silver.
Other farms I've detected where I've found fatty Indian heads and other nice old coins but no silver.
The silver gods have cursed me I tell ya! I have some of the very best detectors on the planet too, except I don't have a CTX and can't see spending all that money on that.

Just making a little funny of Underachievers Silver Club.
You can be president and I could be Vice president.

My comment just came in a little far down the page from yours. I should have used the Quote button. Sorry.

Oh, hey, I get it now! You are a funny guy! I like your humor.
Maybe the name of the club should be: The Underachievers Metal Detecting Club." Only those who find a few silvers a year can join.
We can have prizes for the ones who find the least silver? Maybe give them the grand prize of a zinc Lincoln penny (an old crusty one at that? :clapping:

A lot of time it is the Hunter that determines the Silver Count. I hunt with a guy that finds a lot of Silver but I find twice as much clad and a whole lot more Nickles. In other words I tend to very rarely "Cherry Pick" and I just enjoy the hunt to be hunting.

In my younger days it would have been in the hundreds, but I gave up quantity for quality several years back.

Last year I found maybe 25, but that included my first capped half dime, also my oldest, plus a pristine seated dime and just far more quality pieces than ever before.

How can you tell a quality, very old dime from, say, a Mercury dime before you dig it?

Since you find more nickels than he does, do you therefore find more gold rings than he does?

Not sure but I bet I do. Most my Gold Rings hit as Zinc Pennies which is another reason I dig Zincs. I do not dig Pulltabs unless they hit close to 12-13-14 on the Etrac or 18 to 19 on the VX3. I find the small rings hit a little lower than Nickles and the big Mens Rings hit close to Indians or Zincs. From 12-15 up to 12-30 is not worth digging yes there are rings in that area but the odds are against you. On the V the range is 21 to 52 VDI

If he's like me, he only detects sites that are that old........former town sites & cabin sites along early river routes................No huge quantity, but oh, the quality!!!!

A few more things to consider are.. some people just plain have more time to hunt than others. Are they retired, single, no kids ect ect. I love to get out and hunt but their comes a point when becomes an obsession too
Tell that to women and shopping! At least this hobby pays me back some buying clothes and shoes makeup is a yearly thing with women lol!!!

I average between 75 and 100 silver in a year. Snow is the one big factor.

You said it man. Around here if we get snow...done. If it gets really cold and locks the ground up...done. I can’t even hunt for at least 2 months time, maybe more depending on things. Cold doesn’t bother, but if I can’t dig a hole,it’s over. The woods locks up too. That being said, you do well at your numbers for what we generally have to work with. Targeting the proper areas and digging ONLY stuff that might have a chance of being silver is ALWAYS key to big numbers.

I’m at 13 so far this year. My goal is 100! Last year I dug 21... But! Then I discovered the Etrac! It LOVES silver!

You dug 21 last year using WHAT? If you’re already at 13(and I know you are) whatever you WERE using must’ve been broken or just that bad at finding silver! Maybe both!

I started detecting Civil War relics exclusively so low totals on coins of any variety in those years. After several years of mostly mini-balls and a few buttons I kinda burned out and stopped detecting for a while. Then a buddy of mine showed up with an AT Pro and invited me to go to a city park that had been the old school grounds. Got hooked on that sweet silver coming out of the ground. Started with a Cz 5 Quicksilver. Did ok probably averaged 25 silvers a year. But I didn't hunt that much, once a week I guess. Then I got a Minelab Explorer Se Pro and started to get serious. Found 100 silver my first year with the Explorer. I had to hustle the last couple of weeks but I got that 100th silver. I really researched and found sites that weren't worked out. Then with my help they BECAME worked out. Only found 46 the following year hunting the same old schools and parks. In the last year and 1/2 I've slipped to only 34. But I'm spending more time researching and hunting old home sites, mill ponds, any place that might produce older if fewer silver and copper coins. I miss bringing home 5 or 6 silvers every now and then but I'm enjoying pursuing those elusive earlier period coins. This is a great topic and I'm enjoying seeing how everyone else is faring and how we all get to the realization that it's all good as long as you are getting a kick out of this wonderful hobby.

[size=large]I've had all the Explorer series of Minelabs and have the E-trac. I still have my Explorer XS and will never get rid of it. I have been
blessed to have found many many very old coins with it and jewelry.
Yes, indeed, the E-trac does love silver. My first time out with it I found a very nice sterling silver religious medal. In all my many
years of detecting I have never found over 25 silvers in a year . . . that I know of. LOL
I live in a pretty poor county in Michigan where the farmers just didn't have enough money to buy a pot to pi$$ in.
Yes, there are very old coins (large cents, half cents, half dimes) on these farms I have found but for some strange reason, not many silvers. Maybe
the silvers were easier to spot due to being shiny when lost?

Hahah! :clapping:Well I only started in March 2017. I went through 5 detectors before finding the Etrac, sold it then got it back. After figuring out how to hunt and where to hunt I started finding silver.

To me.. this may start a firestorm... but Etrac on auto-sens is not very deep at all. I MUST be on manual jacked up sensitivity to get great depth.

That’s a lot of detectors!:) Good to see you got back on “Trac”...it depends a lot on your soil and conditions. I’ve found 10” coins with the Explorer2 and a Sunray 12” coil on semi Auto Sensitivity, but then that was in good black dirt. It doesn’t matter much, the results matter. If you are able to wind it up and find what you’re after, that’s what counts, all other things aside. There are so many different hunting conditions it’s hard to say whats “best”. You’ve obviously got the hang of it now!
