How many remember the very first detector you started the hobby with and how long ago ??

My first metal detector was a Whites Coinmaster I bought from a garage sale in 1972. I found enough to pay for it in change the first day I had it and a gold ring. I was Hooked...
Sounds like my first one (1970) it was a conquistador coin master made by whites electronics for someone else. Easy to swing too lol

My first detector was a compass coin scanner pro i was 16 and just started my first job as a bin man in london someone had thrown it out in the rubbish collection so i had it away first time out i dug a few horse shoes and plough parts then jackpot a george the first penny after i was hooked had many other detectors over the years but i got the compass that started it all and it still works.

As a poor 15yr old who loved the hobby of electronics, I could only dream about buying a Relco, Jetco, Whites, and Garrett that I saw in magazines.
My father, an electronics tech, helped me build a BFO detector from a schematic we found in a hobby electronics book.
It was a BFO oscillator that coupled with a small transistor radio which was tuned to a dead spot in the low AM band. It only went a couple inches deep.
I guess when my parents saw how vested I was in the hobby of detecting and electronics for that whole year, they extended themselves and bought me a Heathkit detector for Christmas.
I disappeared to my room the whole day into the evening meticulously assembling it.

I started with a bounty hunter in 1990, i think it was called a pioneer or something like that. (no time to hunt) Next was a cz-20 (still not much time to hunt) then a minelab safari, same thing (time poor) Next was the 800 (just before retirement) plus a vanquish for my wife, then i began to hunt! Now i am trying to decide between the 900 or the manticore. What caused the time shortage was that i drove a truck, nationwide for about 48 years. (Been everywhere, seen nothing.)

Just retired myself.
Getting the Manticore.
That 2D screen is awesome.

White's in the spring of1974. Can't remember the model. Bought it from Cooks Appliance Repairs in Albany, Ga. Cookie was a nice person. He even took me to a few of his personal places to help me get started. Bought a few more from him over the next 10 years. Then I moved to the Atlanta area. Bought 2 detectors from a dealer in Cobb county. He acted like he was doing me a big favor. I could not stand his bad mouthing Garrett even though I knew nothing about them. Found another dealer pretty quick. Last detector count was in the low 50's.

Wish I could get it fixed!
