my vaquero came with a coil cover but i would've ordered one if it hadn't. when i'm hunting my coil is ON the ground all the time unless it's rocky. i feel that if it's 1 or 2 inches off the ground then you lose 1 or 2 inches in depth.
I just got a Deleon, you got to I don't care for the simple epoxy fillled bottom. It protects your hundred dollar something coils.I can't afford to replace coils.
I had to order a scuff cover for my 9 x 8" coil and and in the mean time i've been using a big sandwich bag until it gets here and been pasture hunting only until i get my cover.
Much of the time I use my Tejon with the 5.75 Con, with the cover but when I got the Tejon in 04 it came with only the 9x8 stock and the cover was already cracked. Took forever to get it off and and when I finally did get it off , I left it off. Big difference in the added comfort of that tiny bit of weight not being on it than when I tried it with the cover. It's got a few scratches on the bottom for sure but worth it in the lightness of it without the cover. If I was using it in rocky places I would replace it but woods and grass doesn't cause anything I see that will be a problem.
you're reply about coil covers got me to thinking:
"I had to order a scuff cover for my 9 x 8" coil and and in the mean time i've been using a big sandwich bag until it gets here and been pasture hunting only until i get my cover."
i like the protection they give but since i like a clean detector i always wipe the detector down with a damp wash cloth. i don't take the coil off each time because i think it may lose it's tightness so after every 10 uses or so i remove the coil cover by working it down from side to side since the soil and grass i go over tends to drop dirt and dust which gets into areas i can't reach without taking off the cover. your sandwich baggie just gave me an idea....with that on, it would keep the flying dirt from landing on the upper side of the coil, or maybe a thin bead of silicon caulk. that might allow me to keep the coil cover on all the time and might not need cleaning again!
I'm another cover user. On other forums I've read where some don't like them and think they're a waste of money, but every so often I've also read of a coil either cut through by a sharp rock, worn through by abrasive sand/soil etc. so I'd just as soon use 'em.
I do recommend that they be removed and cleaned fairly often to avoid any build up of mineralized soil and/or moisture.
