How long you been using a Sovereign??

One of the best beachdetectors I owned in my 30 years of metaldetecting.

Made some video's of my trips to the beaches here in The Netherlands. The GT together with the WOT coil is a perfect combination.

My Youtube name is: thedutchtreasure.

Hope you like the video'Andre

It's been almost four years for me and I gotta be honest I didn't think it was for me. I even hung it up and put it in the corner for a few months, pondering my next move. After thinking about it I gave it another try or two, after all it's a simple turn on and go detector, it can't be that hard. I did get a meter for it before I gave it another chance and I believe that was what made me understand the tones and it was clear sailing after that. It didn't take me long to love this detector after that and I haven't looked back . I've been detecting since 1976 and I take pride in going back over those old once productive spots that have been beat to death and finding a couple more keepers, the Sovereign allows me to do that. My total amount of finds are not mind boggling but are rewarding because they were masked in iron or other trash or were very deep and the coins are good quality old coins. The Sovereign excells in this enviroment and is so much fun to use. Like Rick and other's have said you need to put time on it and not give up. Learn something each time out, you won't be disappointed. Here is what I've found with the Sovereign, not large amounts but exteremly satisfying.

40 silver dimes- 2 seated
20 Barbers
13 Mercury's
4 Roosevelts
1 Canadian
14 Indianheads
1 sheild nickle
4 V-nickles
10 buffalo's
6 silver quarters- 2 Barbers
3 Standing liberties
1 Washington

I have been using the Sovereign platform since the late 90's. To bad they did away with the line. I hope Minelab merges Vflex and BBS to make a lighter digital hybrid new Sovereign.

Also after the first time out with it did you wish you didn't buy it??
I been using the Sovereign since 1996, so I have many hours on it, but when I first got it i wondered if I made the right choice as it was different than I have used before since 1973. Took a while to see what this detector could really do and learned more each and every time out with it, so those that are new to the Sovereign I will tell you don't give up and start with it simple so the learning curve will be a lot easier. This detector will impress you when you get to know it with finds out of many areas you and others thought was worked out. I see many new names on this forum looking to learn and a few of us old timers that have a lot of hours on our Sovereigns and have seen what it can do, so those that have questions ask away as we would like you to be successful as we have been.

Hi Rick;

When I first purchased mine (soon after they first came out) and used it for the first time, I thought "this is some strange animal" and put it in the closet, planning on perhaps selling it. Sometime later I was detecting an old Monastery and having really good luck finding old coins and other artifacts, but my detector (a Whites) crapped out and I had to send it in to the factory for repairs. Not wanting to wait for my Whites to get repaired to continue detecting the place, I decided pull the Sovereign out of the closet and try it since it was the only other detector that I owned. It wasn't too long before I started to find some coins and as I continued to use it and get the hang of it I started to really like it and see what a really awesome detector it was. I liked it so much that when my Whites came back from being repaired, I put it to the side and continued using the Sovereign. That was the experience that made me really love this machine. Just use it and learn it and you'll like it. :)

About a year and a half ago, bought a Sovereign GT from Kellyco. Took it out three times just after receiving it. The first time out, it was pretty close decision about whether to throw it in the creek or the car. Went a couple more times right after, but still had poor results due to my lack of understanding of how it worked or how to tune and use the machine, so I put it on the shelf of things to do and got the old standby made by a different manufacturer down from its place. I still didn't find much, but at least I didn't feel like such an idiot! The od machine found a clad dime at nine inches deep in a pea gravel totlot under some very ideal conditions, kept me from putting the new machine in the trash. Figured that I would "get around to" learning how to use the other machine. Well, I guess now's the time. Charged the battery, put a new battery in the noise cancelling headphones, and I'm ready to go. Digging tools and pouch found, checked over, all good. There's a lot of youtube stuff with GT's, and there are several maps available for areas whose history I'm familiar with. Now about that 18F and snow spray out there: It should be gone by Saturday with some sunshine and 40+ temps!

I bought my first Sov in 1994 and have owned four different ones. If I had the money, I would immediately buy a good used one, but retirement makes that tough. I think that for simplicity and power, there is none better. In my humble opinion, when God almighty takes a day off to go metal detecting, you will see a So in his hands.

I've had a Sovereign since the 1990's. I've toyed with it off and on over the years. Mainly it sat collecting dust after my 1st child was born. I gave up detecting all together for a long time. Well, this year I'm getting back into the hobby. I really miss it. I may not get out much, but I am going to learn the Sovereign before I drop a boatload of cash on a new machine. I never fully grasped the workings of the detector. I was young and stupid, I guess. I've already made new battery packs and want to make a straight shaft. I just bought a 180 meter off ebay and am awaiting it's arrival. It looks like this forum is the place to be for Sovereign Users. I hope to be doing a lot of reading in the next few months about this machine. From what I've read already, you guys sure know your stuff! I hope to be putting that knowledge to work as soon as the cold passes and all of this snow melts!
