how is it.....

Hello Golden, loI, I can't complain about the Quattro, if it wasn't for our proud Quattro ownership I wouldn't have had the great time at the Wedderburn comp with you and Garry. The Quattro has been getting dragged through the mud something terrible on one of the other forums but one thing you won't find amongst the quattro owners in this forum is bagging of other makes of detector. They are a top lot !!!
John

Good goin' redusmit!!!! I'm so glad to hear some good news from you as far as your Quatro goes. I was gettin' a little worried here, but sounds like your on the right track, and I'd love to get one of those elipitcal coils too. They sound like a reasonable idea, not only because your closer to your "hot strip", so to speak, but also, theoretically, because they're eliptical, the hot strip might be as long as the length of the coil (long wise). I'm not sure about that, but "it sounds good on paper". Stay with it, and your gonna start to love this detector, I believe. Marc.

Really good to hear your enthusiasm about Quatro, redsumit. You know, it was the same thing for me when I first got my Quatro. I really freaked out with all the sounds and noises I got, until I started to calm down a bit and started learning to decipher some of them. It's really true what Golden says about really "listening to what the Quatro is telling you". This darn thing is so sensitive it'll blow your mind with sounds if your not careful and super patient, and believe me, I've been there on the impatient side, more than I'd like to admit. Stay with it, get that eliptical coil, and I might add if you really want separation on small targets in really trashy areas, pick up one of the smaller coils (4 or 5 inch size) I hear there's an eliptical 4 or 5 incher that kicks butt in that arena. I have an older round 5 inch coil that is absolutuly amazing at zeroing in on targets in really trashy areas. It separates them like you wouldn't belive. Of course you can't cover as much area as a bigger coil, but if you want separation, that's the ticket, with the smaller coils that is. Keep us informed as to how it's going for you. I'm always interested. Marc.

John, here I go again, I know I'm probably over doing it, but I swear, I'm speaking with thoughtfulness and integrety on this. I heard about that incredible outting with Golden. Wish I'd have been there too, (although I'm not sure if I could have "held up", as long as you guys did), but I heard it was a great weekend. I just wanted to address what you said about this forum not "bagging" the other brands. I know I really get on my soap box about the Quatro, quite often, and maybe I tick some people off, but the way I figure it, because this is a forum, that's part of what this is all about, But........., ,,,,,,,,, what I also want to say is, I honestly think that the vast majority of the posts I read on Finds Forum are extremely well thought out, very intellegent, thoughtful responses, and believe it or not, I try to fall into that catagory too. But I really think our "gang here" really seems to respect each other, and the overall feeling I get is: " let's be honest, and try and help each other, not just say a bunch of stuff to try and rile everyone up". I think if you look over most of the posts and responses on this forum it's a pretty darn responsible, level headed bunch of posts that can be backed up most of the time, not just putting down someone elses brand, just to be putting it down. When I read comparisons, it usually seems to be "reasonable", thought out, comparisons, not just blurbing out of competive brands. I'm saying this in agreement to what you said about Finds Forum not just putting down other detectors, "just to be putting them down". If we disagree, it's usually for a reason, and we'll try and back it up. That's all I'm trying to say here, but as an adjunct, I'm so pleased and fullfilled at the wonderful comradery, I've experienced on this forum and the tremendous "positive attitude", I've felt most of the time on the posts here,,,,,,,HOWEVER, you know I feel so strongly, about the Quatro, I'll get up in anybodys face who want's to challenge it, but I swear, I'll try and do it in a thoughtful, honest responsible way, and if I think they've got me beat, or should I say got Quatro beat, I'll back down and admit it, but, I don't think too many detectors in the world today, could take on that challenge. . Sincerely, Marc Trainor.

yeah i have a 5 inch coil for the quattro but last summer it seemed like it was doing same thing as 10.5 coil. thats why i thought maybe it was broke or some thing. i think this year what im gonna do is put it in all metal mode w/ ferrous sound and auto sensitivity, to eliminate nulling out. see last year all i kept doing was changing all my settings over n over n over again. i was actually changing them more than i was MDing. now on another note, 2day me and the wife went out into the snow out in woods by an old farm from about late 1800's, well we found another foundation that i didnt know about not 2 far from the 1st farm AND yet another well. so this makes 2 wells, not that i will really dig in them just around em come spring time. BUT my question on this is did these small settlements up on top of a hill typically have coinage or did they trade for supplies. im mostly lookin 4 relics rite now only 2 date the areas, but im into coin shooting tho. thanx again

Redsumit, Try runing manual sensitivity not automatic sensitivity. Run it as high as can be done without the Quattro falsing on the ground. I usually run 18 to 20. If falsing occurs I cut the sensitivity back by a count of two and try again. Keep doing this till the falsing is gone. I normaly run 18 but have had to run as low as 12. I use to run auto sensitivity until I noticed that some targets would disappear when pinpointing(my style is to lift the coil an inch or two to improve target location during pinpointing). As an example: I found a military button at 4" but could not pinpoint it If I lifted the coil any off the ground. This told me that auto sensitivity had set the depth to detect at 4", not god. After chatting here about that problem I found out that some Quattro users used manual sensentivity. Try air testing coins using auto and manual sensitivity. You'll be surprised how much extra depth manual sensitivity gives you.

Hello John, thanks for that! We feel the same about meeting you at the comp! Well, what's the count down to the March comp? About 6 weeks? I can't wait. As for the unfortunate detectorists who think the Quattro is a dud, I'll be using mine in the comp, as I did last year. It's so true what you said John, that you wouldn't find a serious Quattro user bagging other detectors. At the end of the day we recognise that any detector in the hands of a master will do very well within it's capabilities. The Quattro is no different. It's a shame that some chose to be a little narrow minded about the Quattro. All I can say is that they haven't learned to master the machine. Haven't given it the time and practice it needs. And boy, are they really missing out on something special. The amount of relics I've persoanlly found over the years, not to mention having paid off my detector twice over, is amazing. All I can say is, if my Quattro ever broke down most likely through wear and tear on my part, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another to replace it. That's how much I like and trust this amazing machine.
See you at Wedderburn John! Don't forget the beer and oysters too. Yum.

ps. Just got back from two days full on detecting with the Quattro and Excal. Just got to sort out my finds before I post!:

You know what you might ougtta be trying to look for, besides relics, is any old jars or cans of coins they might have burried near a tree, or a fence or somewhere they could remember it after they burried it. I know during the depression back in the late 20's people didn't trust banks and many of them burried their "loot" in mason jars or cans, or strong boxes of some kind. You might just find the mother load out there. Marc.
