How high does the depth counter go

Soil seems to make a huge difference in depth. My 6" coil also seems do better in heavily mineralized soil than my 11" coil, probably due to how much mineralization the coil has to look through per sweep.

Just yesterday, I spent some time in front of an old school where my Auto suggested 3-4, and could not get much higher than 9 in Manual before it would stop chirping.
Turns out the entire front section of the school yard is layered with 3-4" of pea gravel just 3" below the grass. This stuff is EVIL!

Moved to the back of the school and far enough back behind the school building the soil is much better. I could get Auto+3 to hit 26 at times, so I ran it Manual 28-30.
However, not too many targets back there.

It doesn't really matter anyway because the CTX will not hit a normal sized coin past 10" in most soils (not sand). The CTX cant accurately hit coins past 10". That seems to be the cutoff. I know ill have people saying the got coppers at 12" or more, but Im talking about dimes, pennies, quarters. The max is 12" as was with the Etrac.

I believe the same thing. I have talked with a few older more experienced detectorists and all of them seem to agree that most targets are in the 4-7 inch range with very few deeper. That is what keeps me from being completely disappointed in the depth it gets here. The things I have found suggests I am getting what is there. It would still be nice to meet with someone.

That pea gravel really is evil. My sensitivity drops to 8-15 in Auto +3 over that stuff and the word "depth" becomes almost nonexistent.

Keep trying the back of that school. Some of my best finds have been in desolate places with very few targets.

A thought I've had is being that the CTX is computerized and capable of very good depth it really wouldn't make sense to have a limited depth indication on the vdi, the computer I would think anyway would be as capable of displaying whatever number the machine could detect a signal at and if a larger item was detected deeper than 12 inches why would Minelab limit the reading when the computer would be able to just as easily generate a correct number as a limited number. Only the Minelab engineers can probably say for sure.
