How fragile are Whites Coils?

New member
I took delivery on a replacement 6 X 10 DD coil and took it out for a spin this evening and if anything its worse than the coil I sent back. Could some banging around by a UPS driver do damage to a coil? I hate the UPS drivers in our neighborhood. I've caught him throwing packages onto our porch from the middle of the yard. Tomorrow I'm going to run some tests to be sure, but I'm thinking I'll have to send this coil back as well. It was falsing real easy and was easily noisier than the stock coil. Maybe I can get them to send it in a larger box and send it USPS, instead of UPS.

My 6x10 rides around in the trunk of my car and I've not had any trouble with it at all. It seems to as solid as a rock........Ken

Does it seem to run quieter than your stock coil? If you accidently bang it lightly against the ground, does it false?

n/t

Believe it or not, I was told by my local Treasure Hunting store when I had a similar problem that if the wire from the coil has large loop at the end before you wrap it around the shaft, when you bang or vibrate it when swinging the coil it will get picked up by the coil and cause a false. He made it just tight enough so the coil can be folded and used electical tape at the bottom and wraped the wire tight up the shaft using a little black tape every 8" up to the break down point to hold it snug.
Never had that problem again!

Hope this helps.

HH

I don't use coil covers and I don't baby any of my coils. Brush, trees, roots, picnic tables. I have nailed them all. Might be just luck but I have never busted one or had one act up on me.
The only one I haven't banged around yet is the Super 12 and just haven't used it enough yet.

I would still be careful. As long as the coils are packed with lots of stuffing
to prevent getting banged around the coil should arive in good shape. The
problem, it seems to me, is how products are treated, from the way people
at the factory handle them, right up until the time they are shipped out of the
dealers store. Everyone has their own way of handeling things. I for one
handle EVERYthing I own with kid gloves. When I'm out in the field with my
MD I am very aware of not bumping my coil too hard on a rock or scuffing/jaring
the coil to hard. Coils CAN be out of calibration when they arrive from the factory
and can be knocked out of calibration. It really doesn't take much energy to
show a little care for one's equipment.:detecting:

I've (knock wood) have never had a coil problem even though I've bumped my share of objects. I have several Whites coils and so far no problems. Coils are designed for use, but that said, I try neither to baby them, nor to abuse them. The loose lead as mentioned in one of the posts is a fairly common problem, however, and always double check the connection at the box end. Also, it certainly is possible that you could have been unlucky enough to get hold of 2 defective ones, although, I'd think than is quite rare. My two bits.

Thanks Robert, I'm good to my stuff. Its just that this coil seems to be suffering from a different set of problems than the first one. I redid the coil wraps and now I'm getting less of the falsing, but I still am getting more noise than I should. I took it off and remounted my stock coil and went into the backyard and spent 10 minutes with the stock coil to confirm its not the detector. Its not, the stock worked just as well as always. Then I remounted the 6 X10 and went over the same ground. What I'm getting is inconsistent pinpointing, in that it won't give a tight pinpoint on known targets that the stock coil will and at times its reading large areas of the ground like its a target, when in pinpoint. My stock coil doesn't do that. If I can't get consistent signals with this coil in moderate ground here, I'll be in big trouble when I go up to Virginia and start hunting in the bad ground up there. I'm calling the seller right after I post this.

As a followup, the seller is being real good about this. I explained in detail what the problems are with the coil and they are letting me return the second one. I'm going to have them ship a new one via USPS, I just have had all kinds of problems with stuff being delivered by UPS. I even had something delivered once and the guy threw it across the yard onto the porch, with me standing there. And, I've seen the driver throw packages onto the porches of other neighbors places and later talked to them and the package was marked fragile and they couldn't understand why it was broken. Man, I hate UPS. Just try and collect on insurance wtih them. Anyway, end of rant.

In that case you should complain to UPS.
Many of these guys are in such a hurry to get
their routes finished they they just don't care.

HUmmmm. Sorry to hear your having so much trouble.
As for coil calibration, I need to
call around and do some research. I may be ME that needs
recalibrating!!!!

I'm with BarberBill, in that I don't baby any of my coils and neither do I abuse them. The coils are expensive and its smart to use coil covers to protect your investment. When I transport my detectors they are protected in such a fashion as to not damage them while in transit. I have not had virtually no problems with any of my Whites coils. HH Dennis in Idaho

Thanks Dennis, I too take care of my stuff. I just gotta wonder why I've gotten two bad coils in a row. The UPS mistreatment of packages is something I'm trying to eliminate by having the next replacement shipped via USPS. If its a bad coil the third time I've gotta start investigating other possibilities, although I can't for the life of me figure out what else it could be, unless its just my luck of the draw. All I know is cannot afford to go out and hunt bad ground with a coil that I have less than full confidence in.

When you went out with the second coil to try it out what were your setting on the detector? Also did you do any bench tests before going out? Dennis

What I did Dennis, was put my stock coil on and search the areas of my yard that I have targets setup in and areas where known trash targets are. I checked the pinpoint response, how tight it was on targets and how it dropped away when away from targets or trash. With normal function established on the stock coil, I took it off and mounted the 6 X 10 and then ran it through the exact same tests. It was acting like large areas of the yard were the target and it didn't drop off with the pinpoint. Also, where I could easily run the stock coil in +3 gain over the whole yard (relic mode with trigger in center), the 6 X 10 required me to turn it down to between +2 and +1 and turn the threshold down just a bit. With the area of the stock coil being larger and it being a concentric, the stock coil should be noisier than the 6 X 10. Otherwise, when I get to bad ground the 6 X 10 is going to be useless to me and bad ground is why I bought this coil.

I think you are setting your gain to high. I have ran into highly mineralized soil in Idaho and Oregon which requires me to cut back on the gain. You are still going to locate targets and the noise is going to be reduced. Try running on your presets and see how the coil works. HH Dennis in Idaho

When I relic hunt in our MODERATE ground (I've done the Jeff Foster test from his book) the stock coil can handle +3 just fine and I get the needed depth. You see most of the CW relics that left in AL are at over 8 inches deep and I need to get the most depth I can. If I run at the presets I can get to just about 8". If I do that then the 6X10 becomes useless to me and doesn't work as well as the stock coil. If I have to reduce my gain even futher when I get into the bad VA dirt next month the 6X10 will be costing me great opportunities. I'm not adverse to turning the gain down when necessary, but I got the MXT to make the most of what technology has to offer. As I've said before, "I've come late to the party, but I intend to enjoy myself as much as possible before last call". An interesting side note is that the Tesoro Eldorado I have can pick up a buckle at 11" in all metal (in moderate ground, and the MXT barely makes a peep. But, I'm not real interested in hunting in all metal unless I'm in a confirmed CW camp and there isn't much modern trash. Although, if I keep having trouble getting a coil that handle bad dirt better than the stock, I'll have to do just that next month in VA.
