I would say that when you can no longer detect anything in the ground is when a deeper detector will help because of all the masking. Deeper is surely more desirable but only useful when accurate. Mineralization masks more the deeper you go and affects VID, tone, smoothness, sound level etc.

If you know someone or can find someone with a newer "depth monster", tag along and compare. Even the new ones will sometimes Identify a deep bent nail as a coin.
