Hot rocks nightmare - updated -

Templar09

Hello

I have my EX2 one year now. I have hunted in many areas, sometimes i come across a hot rock, ok, but the area i am hunting now, is driving me crazy... Every step i make there is a high and strong "beep" - always in silver area ( FER 00, COND 31 ) and very deep, sometimes medium. Only in avto - sensitivity mode signals are gone, but i know in this case i loose much on depth... If i discrimine it i will loose silver coins for sure. The area is very promising...

Best Regards,

Drop the Iron Mask at -16 (All-Metal) and listen for the High Tones. Low Tones are Iron. So everything on Top is High Tones and Bottom Low Tones on your Smartfind Screen. If this doesn't help, see if you can Learn the Hot Rock into a Pattern and then you can reject that area and keep the rest of the Screen Wide Open. It will mimic Iron Mask if you do this and it should work with Ferrous Tones. Usually when you get a 31 Conductive Reading, it will be Iron Junk but I have been surprised a couple times when it was actually a Coin. I was using Conduct Tones at the time. Hope this helps out and Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

I am already in Ferrous mode. I run in iron mask -14. All hot rocks are hiting in top right area - silver area... If i discriminate this, i will loose silver. Every swing i made produce a signal... It seems imposible to hunt in this area... Did anyone here have such experience?

Best regards

It doesn't matter if you are in ferrous or conductive with hot rocks. They usually hit extreme upper right. You might do what James suggested and just black out a couple of pixels in that area, most coins hit a little bit lower.

Generally hot rocks have a different feel to them than coins, usually depth meter is at max and harder to locate precisely. With experience you can learn to ignore these hits, but I have no idea if you'll still be able to pick up coins in this area.

I've had similar results in coal slag, it was often used instead of class 5 gravel under sidewalks years ago. And I have picked some good coins out of this mess but it is difficult.

I guess machine tolerances may differ a tad but a 31 usually is iron or junk imitating a high coin...Also in my neck of the woods most older houses burned coal and their stoves were not efficient leaving unburnt coal when they threw it in back yard and caused interference at times and also a hot rock effect on targets. Usually the cursor movement was a dead giveaway. Actually some of these yards are just not huntable in areas with any unit..From your description sounds like your hunting over a rock base which gives the same effect and may be time to move on..Just a theory, but if it does it constantly certainly a good guess...i would think....

I have an early 1800s yard thats never been hunted. Its so bad its almost a constant signal. I know the goodies are there but I can't locate anything but one lone zinc at the surface.

Open the Screen all the way up as a Pattern. Then edit it with the Smallest Cursor and then X (Blacken) it and run it all the way across the top of the Screen. Then Save it. I just tried it with my Explorer XS in Ferrous Tones and it still hits the Coins No Problem. I am in a Pattern and not Iron Mask. This is a mimic of Iron Mask and should work just like it. I don't have a Hot Rock with me to try to see if this will help or not so you will have to try it out in the field and let us know what happens. Hope this solves most of the Hot Rocks problem and look forward to you posting info about this. Good Luck and HH.

Bob I also have place the SE wont't work because and have to use one of my other detectors to cope with the problem.

I just air tested it against some Iron Objects and even Stainless Steel and they rang out with a Low Pitch, just like All-Metal Iron Mask -16 in Ferrous. Remember, my settings are in Ferrous, with a wide open Pattern with only the very top Blackened Out with the small Cursor. It is just like have Iron Mask -16 All-Metal Ferrous Tones but with a Pattern. It should work since Hot Rocks fall into having a 31 Conduct and 31 reads the very top of the screen. Like I also said, I won't know for sure if it will work until he gets out and tries it and lets us know. I would try it but there is about 16" of Snow on the ground at the moment. Hope it works and Good Luck and HH.

No, i can hear treshold all the time (mostly), no nulling. This is giving me hope, that i can do something. I can remember an earlier area, where i have a constant null - all the time - dead zone. That was realy strange to me, lowering the sensivity helps nothing. Only in auto-sens mode i have a treshold and even than there was a lot of nulling. Even in allmetal mode there was no signal... The area was not that big so i have canceled it, but it was the strangest thing (beside this hotrock problem now) i have experied since im in metal detecting.

Best Regards

This weekend i will return to that area and test the patern, ignoring hot rocks... I will inform you all.

Best Regards

produce a null but if there is, it might just help get some iffy signals to make one curious on what is causing this and it could lead to some Silver Coins with a little luck. I hope that it works and Templar09 comes back with great news that it indeed worked. Then it would open up a few area's that are loaded with Iron or Hot Rocks that others have had troubles with in the past and maybe then a person would have a slim chance of pulling some of those Old Coins and Relics at these sites that has to be there somewhere. I just hope it works! Good Luck and HH.

Hello again,

Latest news about my problems with hotrocks... After trying many settings, using less sensivity, discriminating them in silver area ect... i learned them how they behave. They always give a pulsating, loud signal, not like a coin... It is a very specific sound.
Once again: Thank you Minelab for the sounds!

I lot of patience... and this is my reward:
