YOU better do an intensive search because it all points to that,plus the fact Felix who works there,said all they do is repair work????MY 1236 x2 was made in china and they were made in the 80's---------makes you wonder what in the world is going on:shrug:

At the time I left in 1995 no Fisher products had ever been made overseas, nor was there any such thing as the 1236-X2. The X2 came later, I'm not familiar with it but believe it uses some combination of 3rd differentiation and sampled discrimination. It was designed by Ross Spain, who was a keeper when we bought the Fisher carcass a decade ago, and who is now the lead engineer on our line tracing team.

The original 1236-X was introduced as I recall about 1987, unsure actual year. It was followed by the 1235-X which was basically the same thing without the variable frequency control.

I designed the 1236-X specifically for competition use, and was surprised that marketing department never advertised that fact.

I have a CZ-3D S/N 1021108xx which I've never really learned to use. I bought it for land use, primarily coin shooting, but never could give up beach/ surf hunting with my CZ-20. The CZ-20 is a S/N1024 series and has a white stick on label similar to the one on the CZ-3D. I also have a Fisher Impulse S/N 305xx. The label on this machine is gold and has the Los Banos address on it. I've made my best finds with this underrated old dog. I think all these detectors came with a lifetime warranty, which I've never used (I haven't ever broke one) but I don't put much faith in these warranties anyway. My question is this: Should I mount the CZ-3D on a pedestal or throw it the trash can? Thanks. Great topic.

Bjones, you should send it to me and let me dig some old silver out of the black dirt of Indiana. Love my CZ3s. I have used several CZ land machines on the beach and never came away empty handed.

Hey Cometguy;

I'm afraid you might not like it. I believe I bought my machine during the time span when they were shipping them out without calibrating them. My CZ-20 runs circles around it. That's another reason I've never used it much.

Do an air test with it on a dime. If it is getting 10 inches or so at 5 or 6 sensitivity, I would send it to Tom D. Once he has looked them over they are a joy to use. If the depth isn't close to 9 or more, I am not sure he can help it much. He would sure give you some information though. The CZ3d, especially the 1021s are great machines when they are working properly. Don't give up on it without trying to bring it back to life. Good luck.

Don

Hey Don,
I'm getting a consistent 10.5" with the sensitivity set on 6. It starts breaking up before 11" but I can get erratic beeps to 13" if I swing the dime fast enough. Guess I should keep it. I'm not using it, and hate to spend the bucks to get it calibrated, and to be honest, I really haven't given it half a chance. Every time I pick up a detector, I feel like I should be standing in waste deep water. I'll be going to Big Bend N.P. in a month or so. My brother lives out there. There's a few old mines outside the park and he knows the land owners. I'll be about 900 miles from the nearest beach so that should help with any saltwater with drawl syndrome. Thanks to all for the suggestions and help. I've checked out Tom D's website and will contact him tomorrow and at least get a quote.

Proof that they are making reverse engineered knock offs. They are not Fisher, T2 or Garrett units! They have some funky Chinese name on the units! Who the hell would buy one of those?

People who don't have a 1000 bucks to shell out on a detector, but can scrape up a 100. They'll sell like hot cakes. Same thing's happened in Ham Radio.

BJaones, I am a firm believer in Tom and his calibration. He has done two for me and they are sweet. Hope you get the chance to let him run through them. He has a great system of reporting what he finds, what it means, and what he can do to help. I would love to be close enough to the ocean to hunt it every day. I am landlocked in Indiana and see the ocean every three or four years. I always love seeing it and trying my luck and wet and dry sand digging. Good luck with your machine, it sounds like it is doing a decent job. Let us know if you go for the Tom D. calibration.

Don

Nasa Tom has converted 5 of my CZ's so far.2 of them to 3d specs and their is no doubt they are running more stable,going deeper and I.D. better in my test garden.I always test them before calibration and after to verify results.A Tom tuned CZ is like no other detector I own and use.Out of every detector I have the CZ still goes the deepest with accurate I.D. at depth.

Contacted NASA Tom yesterday. My CZ-3D will be in route to him as soon as he emails me the mailing address. Forgot to ask him -- Does he calibrate CZ-20s.

I have a newer CZ-3D and I am really pleased with it's performance and depth. I have contacted Tom Dankowski and he will run a full calibration/validation/certification on the unit with out voiding the warranty. Also I had a couple of questions about sensitivity & ground balance and e mail NASA Tom and he returned an answer within hours. This is one machine I am glad I went ahead & purchased.
