High Schools Getting In

Captain Kelly

New member
Hello, Has anyone gone to a high school to do any hunting? What is the standard procedure to get them to allow you to hunt. Are they usually open to it? I have a high school near by that I remember lot of jewelry wearing kids when I was young. Went along with the big hair?

Thank you Kelly

I haven't hunted a high school yet, but I hunt elementary and middle schools. I just go on the weekends when they are closed. A maintenance guy came over by me once, I guess he thought I looked suspicious or something, but when he saw me MDing he started to ask me some questions (he was thinking of getting a detector). Somebody is always on duty, if they don't want you on the property, they will let you know. And if anyone does come up to you, just show them your trash bag, they will see that you are actually doing them a service. :detecting:

This is what I do in my town, and it works here, maybe its different in other places, If I was going to ask someone, I would ask a maintenance man, like I said I see them on the weekends.

Depends on the state your in I guess. I have been to a cuple of High Schools but the sports areas are locked up. The base ball fields, foot ball and soccer fields are also locked up. All I can say is GOOD LUCK

I just go, on the weekends and after school. I have never had anyone bother me.

To get the real permission you would have to go to the local Board of Education. I did that and I'm probably the only guy around that has written permission. I got permission from the Superintendent, the guy that was actually in charge of school grounds thought that it was his property. I also checked with the parks. The city-yes. Metro parks-no but if you're filling your holes the rangers will look the other way. State-permit only and only in certain areas. The State of Ohio is cracking down. Michigan there are state parks you are not allowed to detect. Ask first so you don't have to pay fines later.

All schools in my city are open for detecting. If it isn't fenced in and locked up or posted start hunting. Someone will eventually let you know if it's off limits.

If there isn't a gate, I roll right in. I own part of it. I am a taxpayer.
If there isn't a gate, I roll right in. I own part of it. I am a taxpayer.
yes I feel the exact same way, after my town built new schools I pay a TON of school tax now

I've hunted high schools, middle schools and elementary schools many times and have never had a problem. In my state they are considered public property so I've never had to ask for permission. I had my best clad day ever at a high school of 308 coins in 6 hours.

:surprised: 308 coins in 6 hours!!!!

I never have any issues, over spring break I arrived at an elementary school at dawn and the maint. folks were
there, They were actually intersted in what I was doing so I dug (probed up) a penny for them durin their smoke
break. After a little bit they went to work and I was off looking for my next hit.
I went to a High school in Dallas last Sunday and was not bothered.

I work at a high school,,,,and i know a few of the workers have units....the best way to explain it,,,is ..." I SEE NOTHIN'.....NOTHIN' ...they do it when the building is closed , mostly on weekends,,,,you do get some nice hits as long as you aren't doing it in a middle of a soccer or baseball game,,,,haaaaa:nono:

I had a few spots where this might have been possible. The problem, for me anyway, would be recovering targets for 6 hours. My longest ever nonstop hunt was 4 hours. I think I was smoking at the time so figure 2-3 smoke breaks. I just looked it up and I found 168 coins in that 4 hours. I also wrote in my log that my back was killing me and I didn't hunt again for 2 days. When I went back to that site I found 80 coins in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Went back and found 37 coins in 2 1/2 hours. I also find that after about 2.5 hours my technique gets pretty sloppy.

That said. 308 coins in a day is amazing. In fact, I would call 308 coins in a week a real good week.

Boy do i feel like a sleppy I have not been out many times yet but I have found 3-4 coins in a park. What detector are you using? Also the school I am headed too was notorious in the 80's for excessive jewelry and big hair I am thinking it is a goldmine :) I hoping to go Sunday if the weather holds.
