HH PI vs. high power PI's like TDI or Goldscan 5c

Hi Tony

Naw, long closed business.

I like the HH PI for what it is, it's a nice unit. Easy to travel, easy to use, and certainly lightweight.

You could get it to go to 10 microsec. but I'm not so sure the coil would opperate at that setting. Of course if it didn't just set back the control a bit. Warning, the circuit board is real nasty to work on, and the wires are very thin, break easy.

Mr.Bill

Hi
I have a 1989 US nickel in my coin collection, would that year have the same metal content
as the US nickel's you are using for your testing ?
thanks

6666,

I'm not sure really as I have various US nickels collected from my holidays in the USA during 2007 and 2010.

Interesting question though as I have about 30 nickels from about 1970 to 2007.

I'll google to find out the answer.

Thanks,
Tony.

Google.....seeing as I have no earlier nickels then it is safe to say that all my nickels are 75% copper / 25% nickel and 21mm diameter at 5 grams.

LE.JAG, are there any plans to produce the manta PI? Are there any plans to make a waterproof version? that looks like one serious beach machine...

I'm a proud owner of a Deepstar 3. and a Goldquest both obtained from Mr. Bill a few years back. I am disappointed though, not in the machines themselves, more in the fact that there is no after sales service, no way of making contact at all. Numerous emails phone attempts, the number you have on your icon seems disconnected Mr Bill. What use is that? I inherited the Deepstar from a friend who never used it, it came to me without the mains adapter. Beautiful machine from what I hear. I'd love to be able to use it. $30 charger between me and the best PI in the world. Between my friend and I we spent $5000 at Bills shop it appears Mr Bill either cant be stuffed helping, or won't because he has closed shop. Can someone else can help please..where can I get the appropriate power adapter for a Deepstar? or the specifications. Thank you!

Those Manta tests don't look so fair to me, but it is to be expected. I notice that most people doing tests for company's, turn sensitivity down on competitors machines or off tune them, and turn theirs up until they even false so much you couldn't normally hunt with them. I have had a Deepstar, Goldscan, Whites PI, Tesoro PI's, and an Aquastar. I still have the Aquastar. I seldom use it as I usually hunt areas with too much trash so I use a Sovereign. The Manta has a ground balance, which according to Eric, would limit some depth, and also it looks like a low power machine (small battery power), so I doubt very much the videos showing 50 cm (20") depths on the 18k ring as compared to only 38-40cm on everyone else's machines.

Hi,

there is no advertising material on Manta
there are only three copies are not for sale and will not be produced
the developer just wanted to have the most powerful and sensitive PI beach ...

the battery voltage is full-load output of 17 volts

there is a good ground control on the case, but it was off
Indeed, it was lost in deep ..

Well ok, Thanks for the reply, it made me look again and now I noticed the back pack which could hold a powerful battery, so I was wrong on that for sure. The site it is on, sure looks like a commercial site in France. Maybe in time they will put them out if enough interest. I still wouldn't be so sure of it's depth claims over other detectors though, a person who uses a detector often, can sometimes come up with settings and methods which can get them maximum usage that others can't. Anyhow, glad it's not like the Pulse Devil, which was a total scam.

no problem

yes, there is indeed a battery belt pack, or what is also the headphone jack
I use two other PI, a 5c Goldscan and Goldquest SSV3

and comparing it to the Aquastar Manta is certainly more stable and much quieter = this is, it makes the difference

equal in power, with a slight advantage over the delay 8.8

Wow 8.8, that is new. I haven't seen anyone go that low. Now it makes sense. But why only build 3 ? Is the cost too high? Or maybe they want to wait till they clean up all the beaches before they sell them to the public? (just joking on that one). If they can make 3, I would think they are tooled to make more if they want to. Sounds like a very decent detector. But I see no discrimination, that would be a major breakthrough. Thanks for the info.

Only 3, because there are only three testers
and yes it should give us time to clean our beaches
I joke (whatever)

yes, handmade, high cost ...

numerical discrimination floor is the study
without loss of depth / or the target is affected by the discrimination and treated
or it did not and we always hear ...

map of Manta was expected to receive

Alexandre are developped Manta on are free time
and takes a long time...

For this reason and others, no marketing is expected

and then, I have left my time cleaning beaches :surrender:

for fun, one of my last shot at Manta
not gold, but a ring of 13th century !

Both Eric and Mr. Bill retired and no longer servicing Eric's machines as far as I know.

Now, as to your concern over the charger for your Deepstar 3, the voltage on the battery should dictate the charge required. Another technique is to count the batteries in the battery pack or read the instructions if you have them and they should tell you the voltage. I think it was determined to be 16.8V or something close when fully charged.

Somewhere on this forum the voltage of the charger was mentioned. I believe it was a simple dc charger with a rating of 18V at 500ma. By simple I mean it is not a newer switcher type regulated charger but one of the older transformer plus rectifier types.

One could purchase a fancier self adjusting NiMh chargers that automatically adjusts for the number of batteries in the battery pack.

Now, once the charger is determined, then the connections to the battery can be done using the headphone jack or the battery itself.

If you want to charge via the headphone jack, then the charger has to be connected such that the end or tip of the stereo plug is the minus connection and the middle connection on the plug is the plus. I have attached a pic of the plug.

The pic is marked GS 5 but all of Eric's designs used the same connection scheme as far as I know.

I should have stated that, generally as far as I know, some of Eric's later designed high powered PI's use the same general battery charging scheme. I know the GS 4 does as does the GS 5.

Eric's low powered PI's such as the Beachscan and Goldquest use 8 AA batteries and a conventional battery holder.

Very nice ring. I have an Aquastar and I have lined the case with copper foil to reduce interference and help quiet it down. I was never really bad, but on the advice of another hunter I did it, but I haven't used it in the past year. Thanks for the information, and much good luck to you, John.

The biggest problem I see with Tonys comparison between the two detectors on a nickel, is that he is compareing a 15x12 coil to a 11" coil.

Hello Mark,

I was going through my records and discovered that my old 11" mono was effectively equal to the bigger coils depth on the nickel.
I remember Eric's tests on coil sizes (the thread may be hidden somewhere) and he came to the conclusion that the 11" coil was about optimum for coin/ring sized objects.
I only ran the bigger coil for more coverage, however, the EMI is much more of a problem with the bigger coil, requiring lowering of power.
Sadly, I no longer use the 3500 on the beach due to EMI being intolerable on some days (more so when windy).
HH
Tony.

Tony, nice to hear you did a test using the 11" coil on your 3500. Your results confirm what I have experienced with VLF machines, with large coils. Havent really used PI detectors, so didn't know if the increase in depth with larger coils, 15" plus, dropped off, like they do on VLF machines, on coin size targets. As a rule of thumb, the only advantage of using a coil larger than a 10"-11" on a VLF, is if you are looking for targets that are the size of a half dollar or larger. It sounds like the VLF rule also applies to PIs after hearing your results. Thanks, Mark

If you are getting 14 -15''on anickel or gold ring in wet salt sand with the headhunter pi i
would stick with it.I had a TDI-S with a 12''duel-field coil got about same dept,the 12''DF coil
was no good on a small test nuget i use, dont know size of nuget,my troy x5 detects it at
2-1/2 inch its a VLF,not as good on beach as a PI.
To get more dept you migth try makeing a larger coil.or a audio amp
years ago i found a volume control audo amp with speaker.I pluged it into head set and the
small sounds came in loud and clear.
good luck.

Mr Bill ,

Do you know anyone who can adapt the White's new 12" mono Aussie coil to work with the Detector Pro HHPI headset and then tune the HHPI to run at 10 microseconds?

My current HHPI 11" coil has some issues and I've sent it in to be looked at by Gary Storm.

I already have another stock HHPI that works great and I guess I'm looking to create a hotrod version.

Are the HHPI headset connectors commercially available?

Is there anyone who can mate the connector and tune the headset?

If it's you, do you want to come out of retirement? Heh, heh.

ROBOCOP

I'm in Florida. Treasure coast. Nice place for a metal detecting vacation. Do you need one?

On a slightly different topic.

Can anyone tell me between the Garrett Sea Hunter or the Tesoro Sand Shark, which has better sensitivity to smaller gold targets?

I have not been able to locate the uS for either machine, unless I am reading the specs wrong.

Thanks to anyone who can answer.
