Do you ever dig those great signals you get from one direction that give a lower tone in ferrous from 90 degrees? I dug a collection of nails before I quit digging them, but I still get the feeling I may be walking away from a silver coin. I passed on one today in an area known for barbers. I guess my question is, will silver always sound good from two directions?

Its Story time!!!!!
Charles, I will attempt to answer the second part of your question my opinion and my thoughts! You asked if Silver will always sound good from two directions: The standard answer being if it sounds good in one direction Dig! Now, the Story...Was Detecting an old cellar hole (junk yard Standard Coil and got that good sound in one direction I dug Trash!, I switched to the 8" Coil dug more Trash! Of course the hole is getting bigger and bigger...Switched to the 5" Coil....Not 2" from this big hole I find a nice Barber Dime at 4"....(And, we worry about Depth)Bad Pinpointing? I don't think so!!! The Barber Dime was on edge. The Trash was the problem in my opinion....So, If you get a signal in one direction Dig! Case in Point that I would of never got that Barber Dime without the 5" Coil. You also mentioned always sound good.....I am sure you have been there "always" has to many variables.......Those ghost signals, digging and digging and nothing there. Why? I don't know! Maybe the hole in the ozone layer or all the radio waves in the air from these high tech devices. Thats why a site will never be "Hunted Out" even by these New and Fancy Detectors and even the experts will miss some! I am sure that you knew that but since Jim skipped Class, I thought I would throw in a Post. Happy Beeping!

Talking about disappearing signals !! I had a solid 28 last night and the pinpoint was nice and loud, but when I dug and could not find anything with the vibraprobe I tried pinpointing with the detector again and the signal was gone. I mean gone in both disc. and PP.... What happened I don't know either... Oh well will try that spot another day... The ground was very dry and somewhat hard....

Last time that happened to me I found it stuck to the shovel. What I hate are those good signals that read 7 inches, you go down 10 and it just gets louder and louder. I figure its an old shopping cart at 4 feet and give up.

not always, sometimes if the coin is sitting just next to a piece of iron you will only hit it from one angle, more of listening to the tone quality of the hit... iron even if hitting good, has a pretty distinct tone and really wont lock on solid like a coin. If you think it sounds good dig them, if its junk then at least after a while you will get used to the good tones from bad

but maybe I have been too conservative. Every time I have dug an iron/silver signal that hits from two directions I get silver. But its been nails only when they hit from one direction. Lately I can see what you are saying, iron makes a wierd sound, kind of stretched out long then the sound chops off quickly. Does that sound right? This target I passed up in barber land was a solid silver hit in one direction but just vanished at 90 degrees. But I had the 15" coil on, maybe I'll go back and check it out with the Joey.

Those monster 15" Coils are OK for clean areas but in trash go to a smaller Coil. I know you are in competition with the nycap guys but at least start out with an even points spread.
How about some feedback from other users to even out the game ???? Good Luck-Happy Beeping!

I understand but the Joey coil is retired until we get some rain, I'm just not getting enough depth.
Scoreboard
Joey - 1 Barber dime in HEAVY trash
WOT - 7 Mercs, 2 Barbers, 2 Buffalo's, 2 IH
I'm in a spot now where new coins have sunk 6-8 inches and the WOT is hitting pay dirt at 10+, gotta go with it for now.

Charles,
Some people do well with the WOT whle others do not, I for one had a WOT for a while and even in clean areas I dug alot of nails and no coins untill i put on the 8 inch Stealth coil of Sunrays and was digging coins where I had been with the WOT and only got rusty nails. I feel the reason was that there was too many nails and seem like one was always under the coil when close to a coin and throw off my signals of the coin.
Anyone know why there are so many rusty nails in a park??
I also agree nomater what the meter says I go by the tones and if it is repeatable from more than one way and a good tone I will dig, if not it is junk.
Rick

Charles, I do not know where you are Hunting but consider this: The DFX nycap guys have only one (1)Coil, the 9.5". You have several or at least more options on the Coil you choose. Now, the DFX users are concerned about Trash separation (Thats why they are using it.....they want Depth too but again only have one Coil!) So, get in their Coils size or smaller! You will get the Depth with your Machine no matter what....And what a good Game it will be! I sit on the 50 yard line and like to see a good Game. Keep us advised on the Score! HH

Rick, You mentioned in your post that if a good signal is repeatable from two direction dig and if only in one direction its junk! Yes, I will agree you will do alot less digging but if you get a repeatable good signal from one direction DIG! Sometimes it is junk but sometimes it is not! Now you are finding what others missed

Buzz,
Maybe it is our soil or something, but on the one way signals it is 99.9% of the time a rusty nail and sometime they will even give a good signal 2 or more directions. I also seen where a coin will read as iron on the smart screen to and is why I go by the audio more than anything else and how it is repeatable in more than one direction. Even with this i dig a average of 5 rusty nail to every coin.
Rick

Five nails per coin is very good. With me it is more like ten rusty nails per coin here in Minneapolis area. The Explorer really has a love for deep rusty nails. To bad they are not collectable. Minelab has a problem here, maybe 38
frequencies would solve the fault.
John.

I have dug many of these dissapearing signals, I make a point of finding out what set off my detector, if I dig ten inches, and don't find it I start widening the hole, and i mean big, sometimes I well find a rusty nail 1/2 a foot from my first pin point, remove the nail and the signal goes away.

Dave, interesting you say that because I have done exactly the same, many times. Must be a characteristic of the XS. Regards.
