hey ghost - 42knots - 108ft - i like it

Hello Mike, Garry just said how he loves your bike, and how it's come up great! He's thinking about selling his Yamy, and he feels he doesn't get out as much as he used to, and may not warrant keeping it. He would like to go back to dirt bikes, as it suits us more in this neck of the woods. I riden Yamy XT, and Suzuki TS 250. I sold my TS a few months back, as I'd sprained my ankle bush walking, two years back, and it's a little weak, which made it harder for me to kick start my bike. So, I'm in the market for an electric start one.
Anyway, Garry wants me to ask you a question or two: About the Excalabar, not much seems to be said about it. When you are detecting in the water, are you just walking in waist deep with a scoop and finding your rings, or are you going deeper? Where do you find most of your rings? Is it in one, two or three feet deep, etc? At the beach last month, we noticed that swimmer like to get out to shoulder depth, where they can still stand. Thanks Mike.

Angela, I have not yet gotten into getting deep in the water. I've done most of my beach detecting in the wet sand and shallow water at low tide. I always hunt the night low tide in the summer and usually work the wet sand at the water's edge and work an "S" pattern from the water to the top of the wet sand and follow the targets when I start hitting them. If there's more up high I work that and if there's more down low by the water I work that. And I find PLENTY that way, at least around here. If the wet sand isn't producing as well or if there are more targets by the water then I venture out a bit. I've done a good amount in ankle to knee deep, working the "trough" where the shell-crush is and also dips and holes further out to about knee to waist deep. I've found stuff out there too but seem to do better in the wet sand. I've gone as deep as chest deep but never got much out there and I've never gone diving or snorkeling with it.

Hope that helps some...

Thanks Mike, we really appreciate your comments. We actually do have a shell- crush on some beaches, and I've worked along it and found a few coins, but my impression is there wouldn't be much to find. But maybe I should give it a better try, for longer than I usually do. We've noticed that there seems to be a concentration of pull tabs too. Do you know of any forums or sites exclusively on the Minelab Excalabar? We don't know much about them, and are looking at purchasing one soon.

As I said, my BEST luck has been in the wet sand at low tide. Of course all beaches are a little different and you have to try a little of everything to see where the hot spots are at a particular beach.

As for the forums, you've been to this one right?
