Here's The #1 True Tested Way To Increase Your Ring & Coin Finds In Sports Fields Or Other Places Finds :twodetecting::detecting::twodetecting:

Think physical activity....outfields with baseball have a lot of running, throwing etc. Soccer fields....more activity closer to goal posts. Think mass gatherings....sidelines of soccer fields. Do some field testing in various areas. If you get some good hits every so often, carry on. If no good finds show up after 10-15 minutes, find another potential spot. Some sports fields are gold mines, others are terrible.

Don't use a digger in a sports field either. You spend too much time digging deep targets in places where usually junk shows up. Use one of Garrett's electronic pin pointers and a screwdriver to pop out the coins and rings. Much faster then using a digger. The more digs you get per hour gets you more good finds.

Dig those pennies! Yah, I know, they are a waste of time, worth almost nothing . Why bother? Well, most silver and some gold rings read where the penny reads. There is no setting on ANY detector specifically for rings. You got to dig a lot of targets. If you want to cherry pick just the higher or lower conductive targets, go ahead. But you will leave the better finds for people who will go the extra mile and dig all penny signals. And I got paid over $50.00 to do just that in pennies, just so I could find lots of rings. And you know what? It really works. And having a detector which can size a target even increases your chances of getting rings also.

Hope this helps...... below is a result pic from a soccer field and my over all ring totals from last year.

:usaflag:Good advice and nice collection..

Thanks.....I have noticed a lot of questions related to increasing finds, so I thought I would help based on my past experience using Garrett detectors.

John:

I've not tried the screwdriver method on coins, but I wonder would it not tend to bend a ring as you pry it up, or am I envisioning the method incorrectly?

Yes......you could bend a ring. If so, straighten it out with a ring mandrel. If you probe carefully with a screw driver, you will soon be able to tell the difference in sound from their clicking between a penny, a quarter and a ring. Go easy on the probing. The pin pointer will show exactly where the target is. Most of the time, you get the ring through the inside and it comes out ok. Using a digger might get it out undamaged, however, a digger is about 20 X as wide as a screwdriver and stands a better chance of hitting that same ring. Using a digger in a sports field is also the quickest way of getting it banned from future hunts.

I probe the coin (target) with the screw driver (gently) and find the edge then pop it out may have to use the handle of the digger as a fulcrum.
If the coin is deeper still probe it ( 4-5 inches)then cut a slit 90 degrees and push the digger about half to one inch and deeper behind the coin to a little more than the depth of the item in the ground use the handle of the screw driver as the base of the fulcrum and pry downwards back and the slith opens with the coin on edge just cherry pick the coin and close the slit on its self tapping down with my foot and voila looks better than before.
This really works well in wet soil ,dry soil ok .
Anything deeper I cut a plug .
This is good in sports fields but use common sense where you do this and manicured lawns be careful although the first method works well.

You will never cease to amaze me sir!:garrett::detecting:You are an inspiration to us all!:thumbup:Thank you for the helpful advice!:clapping:Great finds, by the way!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Most of the well used sports fields in Edmonton get a crop (re-sodded) of new grass every 2-3 years, so the coins are always in the top 2-3 inches. Nearly all the deeper stuff is junk from the years gone by. A lot of these sports fields have been hunted for many years. Now there are fields here with deeper silver and other surprises. These of course get treated similar to how you get deeper signals.

The name of the game in my post is quantity, which always ends up increasing quality also. Hope you are having a great summer Joel. Are you getting all the rain that we have been getting during the last couple of weeks?

If you were detecting a football field, would you say the 50 yard line would be the best? I know that the game is usually played mostly 20 yards on either side of the 50 yard line.

Hi, John

The quantity and Quality of your finds has allways impressed me. I too detect soccer fields and have found Gold, silver and stainless jewelry but not much.My Question is, do you
grid the soccer field? If so how do you do it? Some of the places i go to have 2 soccer fields and sometimes 3 sets of goals.
When i detect I only have 2-3 hours and when i return i always feel like im going over the same spots or i 'm wandering around not giving proper coverage.

Last year, I primarily did soccer fields, but now am detecting beaches and learining water detecting. But will be hunting them in the fall when the water is cold and they are
full of goodies.I want to go back with a good plan (grid). If you have any suggestions they will be greatly appreciated.

I miss digging the park with my Ace 250.

Thanks, Epi

Good advice from a proven hunter. Thank you.

On a personal note, I have never had much luck using a screw driver unless the coin was very shallow. Perhaps I am doing something wrong or perhaps I am just stupid. However I have often used a large knife to good effect on athletic fields and finely manicured lawns that left no sign of my intrusion.

Thanks for the great advice, John. I wish some of you more experienced guys & girls would make some videos. I go to the local library once or twice a week just to watch videos. Unfortunately, the headphones at the library are defective and they are not replacing them due to budget cuts. I asked and received permission to bring my own headphones. Does anybody know if the headphones for the metal detector will work on a computer? They are the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn and don't hurt your ears like the ones at the library.

From the land of the Bluenose...must be a lot of other diggers in your area. here the best spots on the sports fields seem to be on the sidelines where the teams change and behind the goal nets. Good post me bouy!

In regards to headphones, if you have the larger 1/4" diameter male jack on your headphones, you'll likely need an adapter to reduce it down to the 1/8" jack typical on computers. They sell adapters at Radio Shack and the like, or try a good inventory "Dollar Store" to save some money. The other option is to pick up a pair or ear bud style, or light weight headphones from the Dollar Store, as they typically have the smaller 1/8" jack that you'll need.

Sometimes it's not the plugging or sod cutting that causes the problems, but someone watching you do it that raises eyebrows sometimes.

I always grid my soccer fields. I start at one end and go back & forth. I mark my area with some metal junk, and continue to grid at a later date. It usually takes 2-3 hunts to complete a field.

To be honest, I have never had any luck gridding foot ball fields. Just the sidelines and behind the goal posts where people leave their belongings during the game.
