HELP with Nickels- v/buffalo/war/shield co numbers !!!

Elmy

Well-known member
Can't get the buffalo/v nickels into my coin pouch...
Have a tight setting of 11 to 13 co to eliminate most of the trash...
Never dug a war nickel with this 2013 etrac !

Most of my nickels will read from 10 to 16 in the CO side. War niks will read mostly 13 to 16 on the CO side. You may want to open the window a little.

Thanks...appreciate your response....so they will be in the can slaw part of disc.....kind of rules out most parks that will keep you on your knees allot. !

Shouldn't be too bad if you go for the deep signals.......( & I still can't resist digging some of the pulltab beavertails! ) :stars:

DUH !...never thought of digging only the deeper signals....got to try that !
Thanks Dale ! Sometimes the obvious solution takes years to figure out.

I have found several "V" nickels. What I find in my soil is the "V" nickel is a little lower on the conductive side. They usually ring it at a 12 or so, but they are also deeper, which may make the conductive signal a little lower. I have found the buffalo nickels and Jefferson nickels ring up about the same (I usually get a consistent 13 on those, although I may get a 14 on occasionally on the deeper signals). I also dig the deeper signals. If I get a consistent 14 or 15 on the conductive side I usually pass. I understand I am most likely missing war nickels, but I hit a lot of public places with lots of pull tabs. If the area is trashy I don't get nearly as many nickels when I hunt.

same with me I dig the deeper nickel signals and they are almost always buffs only found one v this year and about 5 war nickels.

What about a coil change ? Will a 6x8 sef or the ultimate 13 hit these nickels any better than the stock 11 inch pro coil ?

On my old detector a 10 x 12 sef hit hard on nickels....it was a dfx. and it did make a big difference over a 5'' and a 10 inch coil.

Hey, Elmy,,,,,,,,,,You're not alone there!!

I Second Dave's comments. If you are accepting just the 12 line (ferrous), you are likely missing older nickels as well. Old nickels corrode pretty easily and don't keep to real tight numbers.

I've been running 11 to 13 co .....ferrous 1 down to 25....got a couple v's ...no buffs....2 shield...
....
Just trying to figure out where they all come in at on the co numbers....

Sweeping faster over the target to see if it breaks up (junk) can help..."rimming" the target can help....swing over it until the coil is off it and see if it goes to iron as it comes off the very edge of the target. I'll 3rd what Dave said also...they can be corroded and have a good halo going, regarding the V and shield nickels and 3 cent nickels, making the readings further from what you'd expect. Look for something that repeats good numbers from multiple angles, though this CAN backfire...
Good luck!

Kevin

I find most CO numbers for nickels are between 12-13. When it hits solid 13 it is almost always a nickel (or pull tab). I do not dig co 16. it is always not a nickel. However if U dig FE numbers between 11-13 with Co numbers between 11-15 you will rarely miss any nickels of any type.

MKUS....Could you give me the co numbers on your war niks ?

12-13-14

I guess not so simple...went out today...got skunked on nickels again....I get nickels every time I use my other detector so I am going to use that to locate nickels and see what the etrac reads them as far as numbers go....the etrac is very good on everything else but nickels for me....could just be my etrac....reading off the wall numbers on nickels...I guess I will find out....I will post my results when I figure this out.

Sorry to tell you but Nickles are easy on the ETrac. Dig 12-14 and you will get them. War Nickles not so much. Some War nickles will read as high as 12-32 depending on the Mint. Look at my past post about War Nickles. You will find that several guys did tests that confirmed my findings. I will see if I can find the Link.

I took my other detector out last evening....I located 6 nickel targets....3 were can slaw...1 was a beaver tail tab, and two were jefferson nickels....
My Etrac reported the first nickel as a co of 10 and a bouncy fe of about 21...it came out red and was about 8 inches deep....the second nickel was a co of 11 and also a bouncy fe of 14 and was about 5 inches deep...it was also red in color ....I tried all settings on these targets before I dug them....Two Tone Ferrous had a louder ,Clearer sound to me...I air tested each by passing them across the coil at about 5 inches....they came in at 12 co and 13 co... My.Etrac noise cancel came in at channel 6.....I usually run conduct and use ferrous in the farmed fields.
A co of 12 to 14 would null on these targets while they were in the ground. This was my results, however, There were no buffs or v nickels to check the co numbers on.
If this is the norm for my deep nickels then maybe my etrac is a little off on numbers ....I only use the numbers to establish a pattern that I could use in certain situations.Such as pulltab parks .

Question is what Coil are you using and how much iron was in the hole with it. I find the stock coil almost useless unless you did all targets myself.
