Help with first unit purchase

RGS2,

I'm not going to sit here and tell you one MXT is better then the other MXT, but I can say I bought the MXT-300. I looked at in every way and still came out buying the MXT-300. I plan on adding the 6X10 DD and later the 4X6 DD. If you look at it, you are saving around a hundred or so getting the 300 with the 12' coil. Most people don't think you need the 12" coil, but it's all personal choice. I don't have any problem with the 12' coil anywhere I've hunted so far. I'm sure I will do much better with a smaller coil, but I'm still learning the machine, so who cares at this point. I dig up trash along with treasure, but that's just learning. You might not like any of the coils anyone of us recommends, but like I said it's all a mater of what works for you. You are looking at Whites machines, why? What makes it better then anything else? It's a matter of choice. Enough of that, look at both MXT machines and take your pick, they are both great. I had the same question in my head when buying mine, but I chose the MXT-300.

The ground is highly mineralized with coal, cinders and coke. If you are coin shooting around houses you will find it. It was put on roads, drive ways and used in the winter on snowy roads. That stuff is everywhere. WV is 87% forest. You will be banging your coil against all kinds of brush and trees. Old houses around WV. are very trashy. I think the park at Nutter Fort is half trash dump. There are a few good fields to MD for CW stuff, but most are in the woods. Because of the minerals and trash, you want the most for your money, I would get the stock coil and a small one for the trashy areas. Also get a bottle of calamine lotion. That is the nature of things here.

Thanks to all for your opinions. I made my decision and went with the MXT w/ 950 coil and bought the 4.5 X 7 EXcele as well. I decided that for now I would get more use out of the 950 over the 12" on the 300. When I find myself going to more open fields & such relic hunting I will buy a larger coil then. But for now, during the learning curve period the 950 & 4.5X7 should give me good coverage for where I intend to hunt.

Purchased everything from Kellyco. Got an exceptional deal, one that makes even me (a buyer by profession) very happy. I worked with Tony there, give him a call next time you need to purchase something.

I went to a grade school today, my 2nd time out. I went there yesterday with the 950 & only found a hair barrette & zipper pull. Today I went back with the 4X7 & had much better luck, 5 quarters, 3 nickels, 6 pennies, a small chain & a dragonfly pendant. Now I am beginning to understand what everyone means by trash seperation. Nothing of great value except what I learned finding them.

Again, thanks everyone!

Rick

We decided on the MXT 300 because I had a DFX and some coils and battery packs that are interchangeable.. Also the MXT 300 came with a bullseye pin pointer and a headset plus a soft case that kellco would not through in with the MXT and 950 coil..I also had a 12" open coil cover throw in in with the deal.. All for $775 shipped to my door in two days.. I have my wife running the 950 coil that came with my DFX to learn with for now.. Nice unit though however you look at it.. Good luck and happy hunting! George

The 9.5 coil should have found those items as well. You might air test the coil to see if its getting the proper depth.
The only other reason the 9.5 didn't find the items and the 4.5x7 did is that you were in trashy gound and getting multiple hits or if the ground is highly mineralized, but you should have gotten HOT Rock notification.. The smaller coil will be better in that kind of ground. But your 9.5 is a good coil for larger clean areas. In my opinion.
